Adam had always been in love with Bianca, but his feelings weren't quite returned. Bianca did care for him, but as a best friend. His was the shoulder she'd cry on, and he never let her down...
Until the day Bianca confessed she'd told her mother they were married, and would Adam mind playing the role of her husband while her mom was in town ? Adam minded a lot! Suddenly he was not the friend Bianca had always taken for granted. He'd turned into a ruthless stranger-who demanded that throughout their two-week "marriage" they share a bed !
Maureen Mary was born on 1945 at Port Macquarie, a popular seaside town on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales, Australia, and is the youngest of four children. Her sister was the novelist Wendy Brennan (Emma Darcy). Her father was a country school teacher and brilliant sportsman. Her mother was a talented dressmaker. When Miranda was ten, her father was transferred to Gosford, another coastal town in the countryside, much closer to Sydney. After leaving her convent school, she briefly studied the cello before moving to Sydney, where she embraced the emerging world of computers. Her career as a programmer ended after she married, had three daughters and bought a small acreage in a semi-rural community. Following this, she attempted greyhound training, as well as horse and goat breeding, but was left dissatisfied.
Miranda yearned to find a creative career from which she could earn money. When her sister suggested writing romances, it seemed like a good idea. She could do it at home, and it might even be fun! It took a decade of trial and error before her first romance, After the Affair, was accepted and published. At that time, Miranda, her husband Tony, and her three daughters had moved back to the Central Coast, where they could enjoy the sun and the surf lifestyle once again. Not long into her writing career, Miranda committed herself to writing a six-book series entitled, The Hearts of Fire, with a deadline of just nine short months. Bravely, her husband left his executive position to stay home and support Miranda’s writing career. He learned to cook and to clean, two invaluable household skills. Numerous successful stories followed, each embodying Miranda’s trademark style: pacy and sexy rhythms; passionate, real-life characters; and enduring, memorable story lines. She has one credo when writing romances: Don’t bore the reader! Millions of fans world-wide agree she never does.
Miranda was the sister of the late author, Emma Darcy.
A friends-to-lovers romance which I really liked as it's the hero who's pined for the heroine for years. *rubs hands in glee*
The catalyst for moving Adam from BFF to Sexy Hot Lover is Bianca's Big Lie: Bianca had lied to her mother about being married to Adam. May had been dealing with cancer at the time and, believing she would die, Bianca gave her a reason to be happy as her mother had always wanted her settled with him. Fortunately, May recovered, but unfortunately she's now planning to visit them in Australia so Bianca begs Adam to keep the pretense going.
Adam refuses initially. He's upset at being used once again, but eventually concedes because he can never say no to her. This fake marriage quickly becomes sexual after Adam decides to take advantage of the forced circumstances. Bianca ends up falling in love while experiencing feelings of confusion: how she could have been so blind to his sex appeal, and was it just lust for her? Adam, meanwhile, doubts the veracity of Bianca's love for him. He's cynical because of the years of rejection and also believes Bianca only loves sex, not relationships.
What's not in doubt is my empathy for Adam. I also liked Bianca. I never felt she led Adam on. She'd been honest with him from the start about her lack of romantic feelings, so he knew the score. (More below.) Equally important, I believed she really did end up falling in love with the real Adam. His new, assertive attitude did finally make her notice his handsome face and sexy physique. But what I found crucial is that, after they started having sex, Bianca loved Adam most when he was kind and thoughtful to her, and missed it when he assumed his alphhole persona, a veneer he'd adopted because he believed it would keep her interest.
Enjoyment of a book is a subjective experience, but this is the romance that ended my long book slump. It ends with a believable HEA and is topped with a sweet epilogue complete with a marriage ceremony, a toddler and one more baby on the way.
BACKGROUND
Adam instantly fell in love with Bianca when they met in kindergarten. He was five, she four. He's still in the Friend Zone 23 years later because Bianca has known him through his awkward teenage years with his long, greasy hair and pimples, so she's seen him at his worst. Plus, there was The Fumbled Devirginizing Incident.
At age 17 Bianca had witnessed Adam's so-called friends mocking him because of his virginity, so out of curiosity and pity offered her virginity to him. It turned out to be a very quick and painful deflowering. Adam believed the experience totally ruined his chances with Bianca and turned her off sex. In reality, Bianca had felt secretly touched, so much so that she'd wanted to cry, but it still wasn't enough to make her desire him. Later on her 21st birthday Bianca told Adam she felt no sexual chemistry when he'd presented her with two-dozen roses in a last attempt to woo her. She loved him like a best friend or brother and if he couldn't accept that then it'd be best if he kept out of her life.
It's not until Bianca turned 20 that she slept with another guy, a hunky bodybuilder. She's had other lovers afterwards but barely a handful. Adam's the one who's had more lovers in an effort to move on after The Rejection. (So neither were celibate in the meantime, which didn't bother me as they weren't a couple and Bianca had killed Adam's hopes for something more than friendship.)
Adam now wishes he had stayed away because being only her friend and roommate is agony. . . .

Re Two-Week Wife - Miranda Lee does unrequited love for ten years in this one. For an unusual twist, she makes the formerly geeky H the lover and the flittery, impulsive h the love.
There is some backstory to this one. The h and H met at nursery school, the H was five and the h was four and the h is the one who comforts the H when he is scared on his first day in a strange place.
(The h's mum taught there and had brought her to the place before, so our h knew where the bathrooms were, which is really important when you are a scared little kid.)
It was love at first sight for the H and the two of them grew up together, BFF's always. Then the h overheard some boys mocking the H for being a virgin at 18 and the decided to 'sacrifice' her virginity to the H.
The h manipulated things so that the H thought he was 'sacrificing' his virginity to rescue her and since neither one had access to google or manuals, the whole experience was an EPIC fail. It took years for both of them to find a better partner and by that time, the h had firmly friend zoned the H.
Even when he bought her red roses and tried to make a romance go of it with the h when he was 21, the h was not willing to go down a wrong road again. But that did not mean the h avoided or distanced herself from the H.
In fact, the h knew the H was still in love with her, because his sister told her the H was, and she used that love to manipulate the H.
Over the years the h has gotten the H to loan her money, tho she does eventually pay him back, share his flat with her in between her frequent travels on backpacking trips around the world and basically keep a light on for her emotional support when life's bumps occur or when she returns to Australia to get a job for a few months to finance her next traveling session.
The h also spends a lot of time at the gym and seems to like the tall muscle bound type as a lover, tho she later claims she hasn't had many of them. The H is not a hulk of a man, but he works out and has filled out nicely from the time he was a geeky teenager. He also has a secret life.
By day the H is a maths professor, by night he is an Italian Suited Gambler who has managed to put a nice amount of money away and now owns a luxury penthouse, in addition to his regular flat, that he makes a great profit on when he leases it out to vising businessmen.
The H has also been widely sampling the tall, blonde lovely lady buffet and his skillz have improved considerably. It has been ten years since the h's last romantic rejection and the h has breezed back into the H's life to ask a huge favor.
The h's mother had cancer prior to the story start. The h's mother always liked the H, so the h lied and sent some pictures of the H and h together at his sisters wedding and then the h told her mother that she and the H were married.
Now the h's mum is coming to visit, thankfully cancer free, and the h expects the H to jump to her bidding and be her pretend husband for two weeks.
But the H has finally has enough, he refuses the h's pretty callous request and we get a three page h diatribe about "How DARE the H deny her anything she wants him to do."
We also get lots of h thoughts about how she really isn't attracted to the H, but he should still just worship at her altar from afar and avoid everyone else-especially the tall blonde lovely lady antithesis of her own small and dark self.
This h has the usual HP H dog in the manger attitude towards this H- she doesn't want him, but she doesn't want anybody else to have him either.
When the H refuses, the h goes into super pouty mode. Then the H decides he is going to have his own inner ranty moment back. He tells the h that he is actually engaged to someone else and the h has no right to try to break that up.
The h throws a huge tantrum, so the H tells the h that her mother can stay at his flat, but he will be gone for the next two weeks and she can figure out a way to tell her mother the truth.
As this is campy ML and this is HPlandia, it doesn't work that way.
The h's mum arrives early, just in time to see the H and a very lovely blonde actress walking into a movie screening on TV. The h takes her mum's obvious shock, (and her mum's history of having the h's father cheat on her,) to bad mouth the H and claim that the marriage isn't working out.
Then the H shows up to collect some things, he wasn't aware that the h's mum arrived early. So there is a huge verbal tussle and both the H and the h accuse each other of cheating and the h's mum tells them to grow up.
Then the H seizes his opportunity and tells the h's mum that they are going to work things out. The H has decided that if he can't have the h's love, he will have her body and he tells the h that price of his time for two weeks is lots of sex.
Cue up the ML patented bathroom, bedroom and any room boudoir moments in all their purple passion glory. The h is overwhelmed with the treacherous body syndrome, but in all the excitement and purple haze, they forget to use the proper protection.
(We all know where this is going, but I am going to leave you hanging for a few paragraphs.)
The H decides that being an Alpha Jerk is wining the h over more than him being nice, so he embarks on a bossy campaign of tarting the h up in designer outfits to flash her about and being very demanding on the lurve club side of things.
This tarty dressing sans proper foundational garments, (ML h's never wear bra's,) and the accompanying accouterments lead to extreme jealousy on both sides.
The H is upset because all these men are drooling over the h, while the h is upset because she doesn't feel comfortable in the brief amounts of strategically placed clothing and she thinks this is what the H likes most - only on a taller, bigger boobed, blonder woman.
The mad jealous bits fuel their passions, they rescue a very cute dog and eventually the h's mum goes home. But the h and H agree to keep the love train rolling and more misunderstandings ensue. The h turns out to be preggers and she hides it from the H.
The H sees another man bring the h back to their flat and he doesn't leave for awhile and the H decides his abused heart has had enough - because tho both of them have declared their deep love for each other, neither of them believes the other.
The H gets ready to kick the h off for good and then she reveals the bun in the oven. She explains that the OM was at the gym when she fainted and he helped her home and then waited around while she confirmed her thoughts with a failed EPT Test.
Then the h goes all out to do a full seduction of the H and insists that she has never done that before. The H says he believes the h loves him now and he proposes, but the h makes him wait.
She doesn't say no to the H buying a house, tho originally she only wanted him to buy a house so she would have a place to leave her rescue dog while she traveled.
We get a little epilogue where the H and h are faking a marital vowel renewal ceremony. They have an 18 month old son, a cute white dog and the h's mum breathes a sigh of relief that the two of them finally got married - the h has let on that there is another grandchild on the way.
I think ML was going for light and fluffy and funny and all I could see was the incredibly user behavior of the h. She was the epitome of HP evil OW and I thought the H deserved a lot better. Plus the h lied, A LOT and at times, the H wasn't much better.
(I think the h really was a Tart, but not because she had had other relationships. Her treatment and thoughts of the H for ten years was the epitome of abusive and I really did not like that she only responded with some courtesy and kindness when he finally lost it and started to treat her like dirt. )
There are some funny parts tho and the dog rescue was great, so if you like the lighter side of ML and aren't as old and cranky as I am, this might not be a terrible HPlandia outing.

I wanted to enjoy this book but my enjoyment was limited maybe because I did find the heroine shallow and hurtful, like she had known that Adam had been in love with her for years and would do anything for her and she took that for granted, asking him to play the part of her husband.
The hero felt love and hate towards her, hate because of the way she went through men, always coming to him in the end to bail her out and love as well since he knew she had a good heart but he had changed from the inept boy who took her virginity and she didn't see that. So, he acts like a jerk, having sex with her and what I felt was making her cheap, the example being the way he dressed her up for the races I found it cheap as hell and he didn't even apologize for it because he felt acting like a bad boy would keep her interest in him longer and at the end of the book I didn't like their happily ever after because for one I didn't think they talked, like how he gambled so much and somehow I didn't feel so good about the book.
I seem to have the same problems with Miranda Lee books, the sex seems to go into porno territory I guess with the hero treating the heroines like tarts and them going along with it.
One of the most interesting friends to lovers stories I've read. They had been best friends since kindergarten where she was the protector rather than him being the protector. He had loved her for all that time but when she asks him to pretend to be married to her to fool her sick mother, he has finally reached his breaking point. He flat out tells her no he won't help her and is pretty mean to her to protect himself. She sees this stronger more forceful side of him who refuses to let himself be walked on and used and suddenly she is looking at him in a new light. I really liked it and couldn't stop reading.
Fast moving with good characterizations, particularly of the hero. He was quite different from other HP heros. He had an average job as a math professor but he made scads of money gambling on everything. She was also not a normal HP heroine, she was sexually experienced but not a 'ho. She spent her time working only long enough to finance another trip to somewhere exotic and breezed in and out of the hero's life.
The ending was just a bit abrupt and could have used a bit more "talking it out" that is why I dropped it a star.
we had an experienced heroine who was not shy nor reserved concerning sex. this is so rare. she was not the town slut, i mean she did not sleep wid just any man she fancied. but she did sleep wid quite a few men. adam was besotted wid bianca since he was 5 !! unfortunately he grew up 2 become an ugly teenager lol!wid no success wid the opposite sex. he made up 2it in his adult days but by then it was too late. his 1st time wid bianca (infact they had both been virgins!) was no good ! a disaster lol ! so bianca did not feel any chemistry towards him bcoz of dat. they had been through thick n thin 2gether.mostly adam had always been der 4 impulsive, mad n brash bianca. she was a fiery lil thing n knew she cud wrap adam around her lil finger ! this was really a good book. i actually felt dat they were made 4 each other n they were really best friends. they knew each other very very well. indeed this was proved at the end; bianca knew adam was lying when he said he had had his fill of her n der was no love but sex bet them
I read this book a long time ago, as a teen, and it had left a good impression. Many years later I found it again and was a bit worried that it may not live up to my expectations... Well, it did, actually it was better because the heroine is not the brainless, egotistical flake I remembered. Miranda Lee subtly shows us that the heroine is a loyal and nice person too. I love a deeply in love hero!
A better ending pre the Epilogue would’ve helped me feel better about this story. And waiting till the baby was 15 months old to get married seemed ridiculously long. The delay doesn’t inspire confidence... it makes me wonder whether the intervening time was also full of the upheaval and negativity of the rest of the story.
At times in this story, I sympathized with each of them.
She was immature/flighty and took him and his long-standing love for granted, but on the flip side, when he threw some hurtful details of his other sexual escapades at her, I actually felt sorry for her. He slept with a loooong line of women for someone so deeply in love with her. And he kept a lot of secrets from her.
This wasn’t actually a happy romance. It seemed like his wish was finally coming true but he couldn’t trust her or it and didn’t seem to enjoy or appreciate it. Maybe it wasn’t possible for him to get over the past?
Would have liked to see them on the same page and honest with each other a bit more at the end to feel good after reading this story.
I'm giving this oldie 2.5 stars because Adam the H was so well written and likeable. I felt for him in his unrequited love for Bianca who was very very unlikeable and quite immature in her outlook and behaviour. She treated Adam poorly but still managed to convince him she was in love with him - i doubted it, even though the author tried to make her convincing.
Nice to have a story set in Australia, not New York.
A new e-book version of a classic story from 1998 from a favourite author of mine. I haven't read any of Ms Lee's books for some time and this story was fun to read and set in Sydney. It was a bit dated for the new generation of readers I'm sure, (no mobile phones or internet etc), but I was expecting that. Lots of relationship misunderstandings as per usual, but it was well written and lighthearted. I enjoyed it. 3.5 stars.
I’m a spoiler. Not because I want to discourage/encourage anyone in reading this book. I just want to write the highlights for me to remember by in the future. (There are really instances when I forgot about the story and I don’t want to waste my time in re-reading books that have bad plots.)
Don't get me wrong.. i love themes with bestfriends turned lovers, especially where the Heroes love the heroines first. BUT this? I just could never stand the heroine. I am soo sorry.
I've read something like this before, where the h saw only the H as a bestfriend and treated him not like a shit but a dog sometimes (no..most of the times). Then later on she realized that the Hero had changed - not the soft and tender friend but a bad-boy type - and she fell in loved with the H. Oh, wait I think the title of that historical romance was "Rakes and Radishes".
And this story was set in the 1990s but still the same theme as that historical book which I mentioned. The Hero here was so martyr that I wanted to build a statue of him.
or
Adam loved Bianca for years! And when he proposed to her she actually rejected him and told him that she loved him but they were just bestfriends (if he could not deal with that then it would be best that he got of our her life). But it was so unusual because she gave, "sacrificed" was her term, her virginity to him when she did not see him in a sexual way. THAT I did not get! They were each other's first lovers (when they were teens) and the experience was so horrible that Bianca never had sex for a few years. Until she met her martial arts instructor who taught her ways on satisfying her sexually. And then she concluded that men who were physically buff (even with pea-sized brains) were good in bed. And off she went to those men, jumping one from other.
Adam also changed his taste in women. He preferred buxom blondes because Bianca was small chested brunette. Their sexcapades with other people went on for years but they still remained friends. Unknown to Bianca, Adam was still sooo madly in love with her. Well, actually, Bianca expected still that Adam was in love or half-in love with her so she sometimes used that to manipulate him in many ways.
Because of Bianca's lie to her mother that both of them were already married, Adam was pushed to play house with Bianca. Adam did not want it at first (of course it was understandable how this was too hard for him) but well Bianca was Bianca. She was just threatened when Adam announced impulsively that he wanted to marry someone else. And thus Bianca realized at that point that he was serious...that in his past relationships, she was somehow a contributing factor to its failure. But Bianca was still Bianca - aggressive, scheming, manipulative, etc. - so in the end Adam relented thus the title of the Book (hahahahahahahaa!).
But then Adam somehow changed. Actually Adam decided to change a lil bit, be aggressive, be mean to her, be a sexual predator. If he couldn't have her love then her body and sexuality would suffice. Then she was confused about this stranger (who was her bestfriend). He lavished on her and fckd her senseless. And she was confused because she might love him in a romantic way which Adam always rebuffed as lust. Then they had sex a lot of times and oh she confessed to him that she was never a woman on top. And I was like? C'mon! Of all the aggressive and wonderful sexual partners she had, she never was a woman on top? Unbelievable! Unrealistic!. Why mentioned that? To prove that at least there's a first time with Adam? And I thought that they were bestfriends since forever and they shared secrets with each other? Why didn't know he about this when he knew about her sexcapades with her men? He even knew that weeks ago Bianca was at a hotel with a certain man. Gaaah!
She became a drama queen and he a drama king (in my perception). And so another small issue came up then they quarreled and then made up. Happy ending with epilogue! Gahh.
I was like.. whoo.. damn..
This was an example about what I did not like about bestfriends turned lovers themes. They were friends since he was 5 and she was 4 and then he fell in loved with her, she rejected him, he suffered unrequited love, pined for her for years!, changed into a mean guy, then she loved him. C'mon! Too superficial for me.
Maybe..just a little maybe.. I wanted her to pine for him too (hahaha!). I wanted her to realize that he loved her for years, he changed for her. I wanted her to realize that the old Adam (tender, understanding, good-boy-next-door) was lovable too. Bleh..
