Savage State by Joshua Wayner

Rate this book
An ambitious book collector with a sense of destiny. An overzealous teen with a hideous haircut. A kind and charitable mother of five. The handsome love interest. All the makings of a typical and forgettable romantic drama, which this story is certainly not. That is, unless, your average love story includes conquest and mass murder. Savage State is narrated by the intrepid not-so-young Olivia Zdanowicz as she plots and schemes her way to the very pinnacle of society in post-apocalyptic Michigan. Her motivations are pure and selfish, and she's no damsel in distress. Some poor fool made the mistake of wronging her a long time back and she never forgave the debt she felt she was owed. Every resident of her world would end up paying the price of her limitless ambition and ceaseless greed. CONTENT This title contains extended sequences of graphic violence, strong language, sexual material and adult themes.

Savage State is far-and-away, almost confusingly, the best book no one has ever read.
Available no where, for any price, no longer on kindle, no author webpage, and only 27 Amazon reviews, Savage State remains as precious a commodity as clean water after doomsday.

Also rare is the heartbreaking and all-too-real humanity that Wayner has imbued his characters with in this epic scale Post-Apocalyptic Action/Survival novel. No witches, magical swords, or even any patriotism, this book bangs a taiko beat of "R - E - A - L!" on every single page. Moral ambiguity, terrible personalities, stupid haircuts, awkward relationships, accurate gun handling and coldly mathematical survival calculus. With the exception of none of this having happened, this could be a history book.

If fate or luck or the gods should smile on you and grant you access to a copy, hoard it like ration bars and devour this chunky tome of superlative doomsday storytelling as if your very survival depends on it. (don't look for it on Abe or Thrift though, my Alerts are already set up!)

Meh

There was too much exposition and not enough "showing". The protagonist and secondary characters came across as muddled. This made the reading a harder slog than it needed to be. The book was also in need of a copy editor to clean up the incorrect "auto corrected" words.
