Of several children's books on David Livingstone that I have read, so far this one has struck the best balance between David Livingstone's missionary work and his incredible travels and discoveries through the interior of Africa. While still being easy to read with fairly short, factual sentences, it effectively painted a picture of his experiences so that the reader learns about the unique people, animals, and geography of Africa and at the same time understands his driving motivation to share the gospel and promote the dignity of all men before God, doing what he could to reacue slaves and end the slave trade. In spite of great suffering and loss, he persevered in his calling and was used by God to further the gospel, promote the end of the slave trade, and bring the wonders of God's creation in Africa to the knowledge of the world.
Grateful for a sweet lady that bought the set of these books for my students. Thought I will read them also. Enjoyed an easy read of David Livingstone. Inspires me to want to read his own writings. Also made me realize how much we take for granted as his wife had no way to contact him the 5 years he was exploring.
Read for homeschool with children. Really understood by 4th grader. Of necessity, it glosses over large portions of Dr. Livingstone's story, but is a very good introduction that leaves you interested in learning more.
