Welcome to the Land of Vikings. Discover the berserk Jarls of Soderfjord, the Vikings of Vestland and the fearsome drakkars of Ostland. The Northern Reaches is a unique compliment to your Gazetteer collection, providing detailed background on these three nations, their people, and many adventures, * Seperate Players' and DM's booklets - 96 pages in all! * Large, double-sided full-color map * A complete 3-D Viking village * 32 pages of exciting adventures in The Northern Reaches * New Runic Magic for the D&D Game * Gates to the FORGOTTEN REALMS Campaign Set
There's still the occasional bump on the road, but for the most part it seems these Gazetteers have hit a good stride now.
This one taps heavily into the Norse Mythology, which as we all know is a rich and vibrant fantasy setting, and a solid foundation for anything northern. You've got your elves and dark elves, your big giants, your dwarves - neatly tied into the previous volume - and your gods and rune magic, and of course your mysterious fjords and cliffs. And this book builds up on it fairly effectively, with more than a pinch of its own unique flavour in politics and personalities and a few big screw-ups, as well as the non-norse D&D races such as gnolls and kobolds added in with plenty for them to do. It still has a bit too much dialogue, but on the whole even the more mundane things - laws and such - are written in a reasonably original and interesting manner, the sort to evoke imagination rather than stifle it.
Overall, if I were to run a Norse campaign in the future, I'd probably pick this one up and skim through the best bits.
