The second book in a sweet and funny Branches series about a pug and his human, told from the pug's POV! Pick a book. Grow a reader!
This series is part of Scholastic's early chapter book line, Branches, aimed at newly independent readers. With easy-to-read text, high-interest content, fast-paced plots, and illustrations on every page, these books will boost reading confidence and stamina. Branches books help readers grow!
It's a snow day, and Bella is thrilled. There's no school, so she and Bub can play outside all day. Trouble is, Bub does not like the snow-it's slippery, freezing cold, and wet! What's even worse, there's a new kid next door, and he has a scary, monster-sized pet. Can Bub get past his fear of the snow and make a new friend at the same time?
With full color artwork throughout, this funny and charming diary-format early chapter book is perfect for anyone who believes a furry pal is the best kind of friend.
This is a cute story in the form of a diary written by Bub the pug. He hates water and loves peanut butter, but he especially loves Bella (his human girl). Another great Branches book for young readers - an early chapter book that kids will love, especially those who like animals. :)
Bub isn't crazy about water, so when Bella gets all excited about a snow day and Bub learns snow is frozen water he's pretty wary. Bub's wariness doesn't put a damper on Bella's excitement about snow, but the new kid next door and the strange noises coming from his back yard is making her anxious. Is there a monster next door, and will Bub ever find snow exciting?
A cute story about jumping to conclusions and a little dog discovering both the sorrows and joys of snow. The full color illustrations are done in an attractive style for the target audience. Readers may be jealous of Bella's multiple snow days in a row.
My sons LOVE these books! They’re great easy chapter books for boys and girls ages 4-8. Bub the pug says all kinds of funny things, including a bit of potty humor which is well appreciated in my household. 😂 They laugh and laugh when we read these books.
This is a sweet and simple early chapter book, ideal for readers that are ready to get into longer books. The bright, cute illustrations help the story move along with visual cues related to the text. And among all that, parents can feel good about the positive messages Bubs the Pug and his friends share with readers, such as don't judge a person (or dog) until you know them. The author also included a list discussion questions at the end of the book to further engage early readers.
ReadAlike: Similar style to the Owl Diaries by Rebecca Elliot , Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney, and Dork Diaries. Told from the point of view of the pet, similar to the The World According to Humphrey by Betty Birney and Magic Bone by Nancy Krulik.

Diary of a Pug: Pug’s Snow Day by Kyla May, 72 pages. CHAPTER BOOK. Branches (Scholastic), 2020. $25 Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: G; Violence: G.
BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Pug does not like to be wet, so when he experiences snow for the first time he is very nervous. His nerves are compounded when he hears a scary dog barking next door. His human, Bella, is also nervous to meet the new neighbor but they conquer their fears together and end up making friends.
This is an engaging book for new readers ready for slightly sustained content. Written in journal form and with a lot of illustration this book will appeal to a wide range of readers and I especially love that it is not gender specific. The dog is male and the human is female, so unlike The Owl Diaries, which is a similar form, this book will reach beyond genderization.
Diary of a Pug: Pug Snow Day is a super exciting book that will keep you on the edge of your seat! It's all about Bob the Pug and Bella, who have many snow days because it's snowing like crazy. They decide to have some fun outside, but then they hear strange noises and see smoke coming from their new neighbor's house. What could it be?
Bob, being the brave pug he is, decides to investigate the spooky old house next door. It looks all rickety and gives him the creeps, but he's determined to find out what's going on. Little did he know that this adventure would test his courage!
As Bob explores the mysterious house, something unexpected happens. The neighbor, who turns out to be not so friendly, snatches Bob's bear and tosses it to the other side of the fence. Now Bob has no choice but to figure out how to retrieve his beloved bear. Will he make it out of there alive? You'll have to read the book to find out!
One funny thing that happened in the book was when Bob was sniffing the ground during his first snow day. He was so excited and curious that he didn't notice a mini ice boot—a frozen puddle of melted snow. Bob's nose got stuck, and it was both silly and hilarious. It reminded me that sometimes we can get into unexpected situations while exploring new things.
The basic message of this book is that trying something new can be really exciting. You should always be open to new experiences because you might discover something you love. It's important to embrace opportunities for learning and growth in your life. Another lesson I learned is that if you take the time to think and figure out a solution, you can solve any problem that comes your way.
Diary of a Pug: Pug Snow Day is a thrilling and funny book that will keep you entertained from start to finish. Bob's bravery and determination will inspire you, and Bella's adventures alongside him will make you want to join in on the fun. I highly recommend this book to all young readers who enjoy mysteries and tales of friendship. So grab a copy, get cozy, and dive into this wintery escapade with Bob and Bella!
I put together an awesome review of this book. Make sure to watch the full version on my YouTube channel! https://youtu.be/MeEg_ogPJMY
{My thoughts} – Bell and Bub have a few things going on in their world. First off Bella gets a couple of snow days and gets to miss school. Bub finds out he doesn’t really like the snow at all. But then once he is properly dressed to be out in the snow things change for him.
Second, while they are outside they learn they have new neighbors moving in. The new neighbors have a dog that sounds like a mean ole nasty monster. There is also a lot of noise and smoke coming from their backyard. This has both Bella and Bub scared.
I really liked this book. It helps to show children that is okay to have an imagination. It also shows them that at some point they do need to face their fears. It helps to also show them that things aren’t always as they seem and that it’s okay to think otherwise until you learn differently.
I look forward to reading the next book in this series when it comes out. It sort of reminds me of the Owl Diaries Series by Rebecca Elliott. Only this one isn’t printed in complete color. Otherwise, they are very similar.
@kidlitexchange Partner: Diary of a Pug: Pug’s Snow Day by Kyla May. AVAILABLE NOW through @scholasticinc. I have a question. Who DOESN’T love a pug and wanna squish their little face? In the sequel to Pug Diaries, Kyla May takes us through a week in the life of a pug. Now, if someone followed my dog around, it would get pretty boring, but Bub the Pug solves the mystery of the monster next door (with some hilarious inner monologue). In a journal style with color illustrations, this book will appeal to young or reluctant readers and has a cute humor that won’t annoy adults. This is a book I want to buy for the reluctant reader in my life. Diary of a Pug: Pug’s Snow Day is available now! And if you think your little reader would like this, check out my review of Unicorn Diaries, too! Thank you @kidlitexchange for the review copy; all opinions are my own.
It's a snow day and Bella is so happy! Even though he has no idea what snow is, Bub guesses he'll be happy too, because he loves Bella so much. His first day out for a walk, snow is not what Bub was expecting. When Bella wants to go outside to play again the next day, Bub doesn't want to go, but he does anyway, for her. But then they both discover a new neighbor has moved in next door, and apparently he has a beast for a pet! Both Bella and Bub are absolutely terrified and they have a play date scheduled in a few days to meet them too! Will they survive the visit? What exactly is the beast?
This is another cute diary book. I loved Bub's first snow experiences. The pictures are adorable and so is Bub.
This is a must for families with beginning readers, and if they have a dog, it will be even more memorable. The second book in this series, rescue pug "Bub" keeps a diary of his daily doings, and this time they revolve around his introduction to snow. The only thing is that Bub hates water and has never been around snow. Through his diary entries, he describes his life from his point of view (of course, it's a diary!) and his adventures and misadventures with his human, Bella. The graphic-novel like illustrations and clever dialogue will keep young readers captivated and in stitches.
#2 in the DIARY OF A PUG series. So the story is in diary format told by the pug, Bub who has never seen or experienced snow and he is not sure if he likes it or not. But he learns to enjoy his snow adventure until he comes across a strange sound coming from next door where a new family has moved in and is said to have a monster. This is a short book with only 72 pages and contains lots of colorful illustrations. Not great...but not bad either....a good read for beginning chapter reader who likes dog books.
This book is targeting the reader who is interested in chapter books but still needs picture support. It was disappointing to notice the text and pictures don’t always sync up. I noticed it mostly in the beginning. For example Bella and Bub are laying outside when it starts to snow. Bella isn’t dressed for winter. The picture of the 2 playing on the previous page evoked a beach. If you have extra money to spend for school and classroom libraries it would find an audience.
Bub does not like to get wet, but when Bella is so excited about this stuff called snow, he figures he can go out and play with her. On top of the yucky snow, there's new neighbors and they have a monster!
This is the second book in this cute children's series. The illustrations are fabulous, and I love how Bella and Bub go on adventures together. Plus the crazy squirrel Nutz and the snooty cat. A great short read.
My son absolutely adores these books. The second was just as good as the first with Bub being an excellent narrator. This story is about snow and the new neighbors next door who seem scary, especially when Bella's mom sets them both up for a play date.
A great beginner chapter book for my 6 year old. I was able to read this book to him in two nights. Sitting still that long, and being interesting in what mom is reading, is not always that easy. He is already asking for the next one.
Honestly, my 4 year old and I enjoyed this one even MORE than the first one (which we also loved!) We were really into the story and curious to see where it went! It was a read aloud that we finished in just 2 days because she was so invested in it!
It's snowing, but Bub is not so sure about snow. Bub does not like water, and snow is frozen water. His girl has a bunch of snow days in a row as well. Fun series. I loved the new neighbor and the dog next door.
My daughter thoroughly enjoys this series that follows a week in a pug's life in diary format. In this particular one, the reader follows Bub, the pug, and his person, Bella as they navigate misunderstandings and fears of the new neighbors as well as snow (frozen wet stuff?!). Cute and endearing.
