"Lost Edges" by Salini Vineeth is a compelling exploration of love, ambition, and the complexities of modern relationships. The story revolves around Geetanjali and Ravi, two individuals who fell in love as teenagers but find themselves adrift in their lives a decade later. Geetanjali, an ambitious contract negotiator, and Ravi, an unemployed engineer, face insecurities and conflicts that strain their once-solid relationship.
What sets this book apart is the authentic portrayal of the characters. Geetanjali and Ravi are flawed and relatable, making them feel like real people rather than fictional constructs. The author delves into their pasts, unraveling the events that brought them together and the challenges they now face. Mental health issues are handled with sensitivity, shedding light on the vulnerability and struggles faced by individuals, regardless of gender.
Author's writing captures the essence of different locations, from the vibrant beaches of Goa to the bustling streets of Bangalore. The vivid descriptions create a textured backdrop that enhances the narrative. Additionally, the author skillfully weaves in the theme of "Lost Edges," drawing parallels between the blurred boundaries of a painting and the blurred lines within relationships.
While the book tackles complex themes, it maintains a fast-paced narrative that keeps readers engaged. The storytelling is accompanied by well-researched insights into mental health, adding depth and substance to the plot. The non-linear narrative structure, alternating between past and present, adds an element of intrigue and allows readers to piece together the characters' journeys.
"Lost Edges" ultimately offers a message of hope and redemption. It encourages readers to confront their inner demons, seek help when needed, and find strength within themselves. Salini Vineeth's debut novel is a thought-provoking and emotional read that resonates long after the final page. It is a must-read for those seeking a nuanced exploration of modern relationships and the human psyche.
Lost Edges is the story of Ravi and Geethu, a couple on the brink of divorce, trying to savage their marriage with the help of a counsellor. Engineering college mates turned friends, turned married couple, Ravi struggles with everyday life and holding onto a job while Geethu is a capable, super successful career woman. The reality of the gap leads to a dissonant relationship hurtling towards a split. Salini Vineeth adopts an interesting approach with the two protagonists alternately narrating their side of the story. Added to this is another dimension in the form of the past and present narrative, making a layered story. Touching on topics like gender roles, mental health, childhood trauma, the book is gripping and will keep you engaged. With each character’s narration, Salini deftly takes you through a range of emotions from sympathy, sadness to hope and despair.
What stood out for me was Salini’s skilful and nuanced description of places in the book. The sleepy town of Bolpur comes alive with her descriptions of the taxi driver, the tailor, her house, kantha work and Tripura. At the same time, her references to Goa’s Majorda and Bogmalo beaches, churches and shacks were enough to transport me to the city. Her representation of Bangalore through Ravi’s eyes as a harsh, impersonal, busy city while upsetting to me as an old Bangalorean, provided a good insight into how it could appear to the outsider. Among the characters, I found Arnav Mehta intriguing, though his description as a ‘Punjabi from Delhi” did not add up given his surname. The story was gripping and its focus on the stresses and tension of living in today’s fast paced times should resonate with many in today’s world. The gentle nudge to seek out professional help to resolve issues is a great message and a well required one. It is also refreshing in its approach where it depicts Geethu as a modern, career focused woman but also, for most, a gentle, empathetic and supportive partner trying to do the best she can given her circumstances.Lost EdgesSalini Vineeth On the whole, a compelling book. Enough to want me to look up Salini’s other books too.
There is a general consensus that if a character or characters make you want to hug them or shake them till their teeth rattles or anything in-between, then the book is well-written or the movie well-made.
Salini Vineeth’s Lost Edges makes you relate to the protagonists the way you would your friend. An exquisite cover can make you reach out for the book but to keep you reading, it needs the words of the author to weave you into the tale and this turned into one unputdownable.
A typical college romance where Geetanjali meets Ravi turns untypical when you have to deal with their respective baggage brought forth from their childhood. I wouldn’t be spoiling the plot when I quote from the blurb that she is an ambitious contract negotiator and he is an unemployed engineer. How they got together is in itself a story. But, having got together they now have to navigate their own insecurities, ambitions, and other mental health issues as they journey through life. Told in the voices of Ravi and Gethanjali, their journey begins in Goa on the campus of BITS, Goa and then it takes you to their lives in Bangalore. Bolpur in West Bengal, Pondicherry, and Thalassery make a guest appearance. A well-researched book on mental health, Salini related the insecurities to the place, where the incident had left its lasting impact, thus making the readers visit the place through the character’s eyes.
Though the story spreads over quite a few places Goa with its beauty and places of interest and nostalgia is intricately woven with the story that it too becomes a character. Bangalore and its famed traffic too is not forgotten!
I did wonder what could Lost Edges mean but by the end of the story, I get to know how this facet of painting where the colours blend is one important skill in painting and this part is intricately woven into the story adding to my education.
If I have any nits- I would say three ‘as usuals’ in as many pages in the first chapter made me feel it was one too many.
A little tighter editing in chapter three would have ironed out the narrative change in a couple of places.
Having said that it did not deter me from enjoying the book thoroughly. I would be picking up this book for a re-read when the story is not too fresh in my mind. It deserves one.
"Lost Edges" by Salini Vineeth is a thought-provoking novel that delves into the intricacies of relationships and the challenges individuals face in their pursuit of happiness. Geetanjali is from Bolpur and Ravi from Thalassery, the story follows the lives of Geetanjali and Ravi, two individuals from contrasting backgrounds who meet during their time at BITS in 2005.
Geetanjali is portrayed as a determined and hardworking woman with ambitious goals, while Ravi seems to possess qualities that are the complete opposite. Despite their differences, they choose to marry each other, embarking on a journey filled with both joy and hardships.
As the narrative progresses, we are given a glimpse into their lives after ten years of marriage, where their paths have diverged. Ravi finds himself struggling with financial instability and unemployment, while Geetanjali thrives as a contract negotiator and even earns recognition as an IIM-B medalist. Through the alternating perspectives of the protagonists, the book effectively explores the complexities and struggles faced by both individuals within the relationship.
One of the notable strengths of "Lost Edges" is its exploration of pertinent themes such as mental health, gender inequalities, and feminism. The inclusion of Dr. Amit's counseling clinic in Bengaluru sheds light on the importance of addressing mental health issues.
As the story unfolds, the reader becomes immersed in the rising tensions of insecurity and ego that gradually erode the foundation of Geetanjali and Ravi's marriage. Salini Vineeth skillfully portrays the emotional turmoil experienced by the characters, inviting readers to empathize with their struggles and question the complexities of human relationships.
"Lost Edges" is a poignant and introspective novel that prompts readers to reflect on the intricacies of love, ambition, and the choices we make in life. Salini Vineeth's storytelling is compelling, with well-developed characters and a narrative that keeps readers engaged from beginning to end. It is a book that sparks important conversations and leaves a lasting impression.
Lost Edges, even the title is so apt for this book. A book exploring the deep topics of mental health, gender inequality, feminism, millennials life, contemporary fiction and romance.

Watching the life of Ravi unfold in the Banglore glamour of IT world.... Was so close to heart. Being a married person who is settled in Bangalore, it felt so close to me and the problems the couple are going through something that's on the verge of reality. The oscillation between the different time lapses, the description of the different cities of India, be it the world of BITS, or the lashing waves of Goa, the Competitive and tiring transportation in Bangalore, the tranquil peace of Shantiniketan or the relationship turmoil of the couple .... Everything is so well written. All I can say is, a must read by all. A matured, beautifully layered, exploring the depths of the world of the working class in India... Lost Edges of Salini Vineeth is a contemporary fiction that follows Geetanjali and Ravi.
There are a whole lot of stories out there in the world. And it all gives you butterflies and after reading romantic stories one after another every story seems a bit continuous and it all blends into each other.
Very few love stories stay with you and inspire you in life. Geetanjali and Ravi's story is like that.
The plot opens up with Ravi and Geetanjali going to their therapist and from there, it goes back to their college days in BITS.
The best thing about this story is the continuous flow of the writing, it just flows like a calming river in the middle of a trek route away from all the chaos. Yes, there's chaos in the lives of the characters but all the portrayals are just true. It doesn't seem rushed, everything has a proper pace and yet it remains engaging.
This one story about love found and lost is going to stay with me, it is a memorable one. And I am going to keep an eye out for the author's new works as she is going to be a legend in our times.
The book ‘Lost Edges’, by dint of the point of view shift in alternate chapters, sports two protagonists and so the reader views their interconnected world from their distinctive perspectives. Ravi and Geetanjali meet in BITS Goa and are drawn to each other despite their disparate backgrounds and dispositions towards their academic pursuit. Ravi has an unhappy childhood on account of a repressive father and a meek and docile mother while Geetanjali has parents separated from each other but still close to their daughter. Ravi is indifferent to his engineering subjects while Geetanjali excels at the college curriculum. The book brings them tantalizingly close to each other and then separates them only to bring them together again when Ravi’s best friend at BITS passes away in a drowning accident. The two marry but are destined to be in constant conflict due to Ravi’s lack of ambition and Geetanjali’s focused drive to achieve more. Through their story, the book touches upon three themes: gender bias in official workplace, unhappy marriages and their effect on off springs, and the mental pressures of a competitive world. However, the themes do not overwhelm the book to abstraction. What is different in the story is the fact that the woman is a strong achiever while the man is a tormented and weak failure. A common acquaintance who is also a psychiatrist advises them to go on a trip to Goa from Bangalore where they live so as to try and mend their marriage. During the trip to Goa old memories, not just of BITS but also of his childhood play their own dynamics. Salini Vineeth, the author, is herself a BITS alumna and thus the descriptions of BITS and Goa have a touch of authenticity. The same is true about descriptions of Shantiniketan and around as also Bangalore. She has a nice style that keeps the story going and the reader engrossed. A must read for all book lovers.
Lost Edges by Salini Vineeth revolves around a couple whose marriage is in shambles and on the verge of breakdown. The story follows Ravi and Geetanjali, their families, the dynamics of relationships they were exposed to, and how they shaped their lives. The young couple has been madly in love but would love to overcome the mountain of conflicts and insecurities.
As the two travel into their pasts and confront uncomfortable truths, things change. Is there a possibility of reconciliation with self or the other?
Lost Edges attempts to maturely hold the turbulent waters of Ravi and Geetanjali’s relationship. It seeks to showcase their troubles and how they project onto their marriage. The story explores the nuances of ambition, love, trauma, and reconciliation. What’s more? It also sheds light on common problems of youngsters, including misplaced aspirations, mental health struggles, and gender inequalities.
I have read Salini’s work previously so I knew I was in for good writing. But here, I also loved to delve into the intricacies of characters. How Geetanjali feels at home in Bolpur, how Ravi brings himself to find a brother in Arnav, how he tries to deal with the grief of losing him and more. The story sort of is more sad than happy but the sadness that lingers reminds us of what’s lost and how hard it gets to reclaim it.
It’s a good long process!
The authenticity of the characters shines through in Lost Edges. Be it the coherence in the narrative or an intriguing writing style, I took my time with this one to soak in its raw beauty. Although the end left me a bit clueless (I didn’t get a closure), I get it because even in real life, beyond the boundaries of fiction, we rarely get closure and we live with it as is.
Lost Edges, by Salini Vineeth, is a well researched & written fiction touching upon essential topics of mental health, the importance of seeking out professionals for the same, the Indian context around availability, acceptance, availing of mental health support system & network, substance abuse of prescription drugs & the ill effects of it, the long reaching impact of childhood trauma and the resultant PTSD that can interfere in one's adult life & relationships and more.
It will be great read even for aspiring mental health professionals and mental health enthusiasts to understand the layers that form the fabric of mental health & wellness, and how it is different for different individuals based on their background and lived experiences & resultant learning/adaptation.
Lost Edges is a story about a millennial couple who are going through a difficult time in their lives. Geetanjali is ambitious and focused, whereas Ravi is not so. Novelist Salini Vineeth delves into both their pasts beautifully and lets them realize (and in the process makes us understand too) that sweeping all our issues under the rug to reply "I'm fine" is not always fine. It is good to acknowledge our shortcomings and deal with it.
Moreover, in this novel, Salini reverses the typical gender stereotypes. The characters are nuanced and well-developed. Ravi's depressive episodes kind of resonated with me; I felt like I was looking into a mirror. I loved the way in which it ended. . Overall, Salini delivers a mature read for a mature audience.
In Salini Vineeth's "Lost Edges," the exploration of love, relationships, and human nature elevates itself beyond the confines of conventional romantic narratives, delving deep into the intricacies of the heart and mind. The emotional drama unfolds with a nuanced approach, steering clear of the saccharine depictions of love that often saturate the literary landscape. Instead, the narrative boldly confronts the stark realities of relationships, compatibility, and mental health, making it a compelling and refreshing read.
Geetanjali and Ravi, the central characters, find themselves entwined in the complex tapestry of emotions and challenges at BITS Goa. What sets "Lost Edges" apart is its unflinching exploration of their connection despite hailing from diverse backgrounds and possessing different academic attitudes. Ravi's tumultuous upbringing stands in stark contrast to Geetanjali's experience within her separated yet intricately connected family. This dichotomy sets the stage for a narrative that goes beyond the superficial layers of love, peeling back the intricate layers to reveal the raw, authentic struggles that define relationships.
As the story unfolds, transitioning from the BITS Goa campus to the vibrant backdrop of Bangalore, Geetanjali's internal battles with relationship maintenance and counseling take center stage. The author doesn't shy away from portraying the heart-wrenching decision that follows—divorce. This seismic shift in the narrative profoundly impacts Ravi, adding a layer of emotional complexity that resonates with readers. The portrayal of such a pivotal moment is a testament to Vineeth's ability to navigate the tumultuous terrain of human emotions with finesse and authenticity.
A notable strength of "Lost Edges" lies in its seamless integration of often overlooked themes into the narrative. The book artfully touches upon the presence of therapy in the contemporary world, shining a spotlight on the importance of mental health. It also delves into the intricate and less-discussed aspects of parenting during a child's formative years, illustrating how these early experiences can reverberate through adulthood, shaping the course of one's entire life. This multifaceted exploration adds depth and richness to the narrative, elevating it beyond a mere love story.
However, amid the acclaim, one aspect left me slightly wanting—the ending. In a narrative of such depth and complexity, the conclusion felt less conclusive than desired. Given the weightiness of the themes explored, I anticipated a stronger, though not necessarily happier, resolution. Perhaps, this stemmed from a desire to witness the female protagonist's character arc evolve towards a more definitive growth.
Despite this, the overarching narrative remains a tapestry of pasts and concealed struggles intricately woven together. It serves as a foundation for introspection, setting the stage for high-voltage relationship drama reminiscent of Bollywood's masala-style storytelling. "Lost Edges" doesn't shy away from the complexities of love and separation; instead, it embraces them, presenting a poignant exploration of heartbreak and grief.
The optimism woven into the concluding chapters provides a silver lining to the emotional turbulence experienced throughout the book. The author skillfully crafts an ending that, while not entirely conclusive, hints at a sense of hope and renewal. This optimistic note adds a layer of nuance to the narrative, leaving readers with ample room for contemplation.
In essence, "Lost Edges" stands as a captivating tale that goes beyond the surface of love stories. It offers a unique and profound perspective on the intricacies of human relationships, making it a compelling read for those seeking a narrative that resonates on a deeply emotional and meaningful level. Salini Vineeth's exploration of love's nuances, the impact of mental health, and the lasting echoes of early life experiences make "Lost Edges" a standout contribution to contemporary fiction.
Lost Edges follows two millennials in their journey for love and purpose amidst misplaced ambitions, mental health issues, and gender inequalities.
On the whole, Lost Edges is a love story, and it is not. The book looks at different stages of love and relationships, both romantic and familial.
Here, the author goes one step further and gives us an in-depth look at how our upbringing influences our personalities and who we grow up to be. How the wounds we bore in our childhood become an integral part of us as we grow. How abuse and trauma, in any manner or form, shape us and affect our personal and professional lives.
With an intensely engaging premise, Lost Edges is a character-driven narrative. Geethanjali and Ravi are its souls. While Geethu is a textbook extrovert-pragmatic, ambitious, driven and a hard-core rationalist, Ravi is highly sensitive and emotional. An introvert and an empath, who is lost in the quagmire of his past and, for the most part, disconnected from his present and his future.
By way of this role-reversal of sorts, the author encourages us to question their biases about societal norms. In Ravi, we see a man who is deeply in touch with his emotions. In Geethu, we have a woman who is used to taking charge. And the author asks the reader—is this relationship really so different from any other?
Mental health forms the crux of this story. Both Ravi and Geethu are struggling with their personal demons, their own ingrained insecurities and fears. And as they come together, we witness how the obvious fault lines appear between them and their opposing personalities.
Through Ravi, the author gives us a glimpse of what Clinical Depression looks like. We witness the panic attacks, the nightmares, the uncertainty and the utter hopelessness that accompanies depression. Simultaneously, through Geethu, we witness the challenges of a caregiver, what it means and how it affects the psyche of a person who cares for a depressed person.
“Being a caregiver is emotionally and physically draining,” the therapist tells Geethu.
And every time I felt like taking Ravi by the shoulders and telling him to ‘get it together!’, I was reminded of how it must be affecting Geethu.
Having said this, considering the realistic portrayal of the characters and their challenges, it is also the thing that might go against the book. Sometimes, one or both characters might seem obtuse and unlikable. In Ravi’s case, his suffering seems endless, and Geethu feels too emotionally unavailable, and the reader may ask why they are together at all.
However, this is exactly what makes these characters real, and their relationship even more believable. These two are highly flawed individuals with completely contrasting belief systems and ideologies. And their journey towards each other through the lens of their personal experiences and insecurities is what Lost Edges is all about.
In the modern world, for the most part, we go through life on autopilot. We seldom stop and look back at where we have been, who do we have with us, and where are we headed. Are we happy? Are our relationships strong and healthy? Why are we the way we are? Why do we do the things we do? Or behave the way we do? What is stopping us from achieving our true potential?
Lost Edges compels us to stop and ask these questions, to contemplate life and the deeper meaning of love and relationships.
“Don’t try to be brave and hold it together all the time. Seek help if you need it.”
I strongly recommend this book to everyone. It is by no means an easy book to read, however; it is a necessary one. Through Geethu and Ravi, Salini Vineeth has presented a fantastic argument in favour of mental health and in favour of therapy. If you wish to know more about depression, what it entails, how childhood abuse and trauma can leave a lasting impact and how timely intervention and therapy can help you heal, Lost Edges is a must-read.
‘Lost Edges’ revolves around the protagonists, Geetanjali and Ravi. Geetanjali is portrayed as a head-strong, ambitious and a hard-working woman who tried her best to help out Ravi for almost half of her life. Ravi is a person who remains consumed in self-wallow and pity once he faces any problem. These two characters both have their fair share of baggage, traumas and insecurities.
Geetanjali has been brought up on unrealistic expectations, while Ravi struggles with every one leaving his life too soon. Both of them decide to work on their relationship, and try to make it work before they give up for good.
In the process, their past is brought up, which messes with both of their mental states. Will they be successful at rescuing their dilapidating marriage?
The story has been narrated in a dual POV format, which allowed the past and present to be told parallel, which I loved about this book. The author has written it in such comprehensive detail; every scene is brought to life impeccably.
Reading the book felt like studying in BITS one moment, and then strolling on a scenic beach in Goa after a few more moments. I felt every emotion that each of the characters felt. I am in love with the way the author describes sunsets and skies. The characters are flawed with frayed edges, which makes them so relatable; the hurdles they go through are very realistic and something that someone or the other goes through every single day.
I personally really liked the author’s writing style. The book isn’t a thriller, yet it managed to keep me hooked all throughout the book; it was so hard to put it down, even for a break.
Being a Bengali myself, I was impressed by the descriptions of Bolpur and Shantiniketan. In my opinion, the cover doesn’t really match the book. The cover was quite underwhelming to me, a bit childish too, I had presumed that the writing won’t be that good. But I am glad to be proved so wrong by the author, I loved reading the book. The time spent on it was absolutely worth it. If you are thinking of picking up this book, go ahead and do it!
Love is something that will make our life so lively. It always flows in the dream world but at the same time, one does not know about the practical life until one enters it. Once the love ends in marriage, then life begins with great adventure in day-to-day life. Likewise, the same happens between the protagonists of this story, Geetanjali and Ravi.
The relationship between a strong ambitious woman and a self-wallow, pitied man was portrayed well in the story. The author allows us to think of each of their characters in an extreme angle of destiny, struggles, mistakes, deeper issues, hidden problems, and more of their pasts to find their present life answers to their questions. It makes the readers indulge deeply in the story to know the end whether they will rediscover themselves or not. It is also so relatable to many of us, especially to young couples having dreams, and ambitions and equally who are doubtful and insecure too.
Both the characters have been developed well. The title and the cover were chosen wisely. The language was simple and the conversational pattern gave a lively read. The writing style and the narration was unique because the author traveled between the past and present to make the readers analyze well with the relationship of the characters.
The specialty of the author lies in the creation of the chapter with the character name, the place, and the time intertwining the past and present beautifully. It gave a clear read and deep insight into the love-life relationship.
The author discussed the difficulties of misplaced ambitions, mental health, and gender inequalities through these in-depth characters and it will connect with most of us who wish to explore human transformations.
⏩ What book do you wish you could gift your younger self?
🌻 Lost Edges by Salini Vineeth is beautiful yet a realistic story of Ravi and Geetanjali.
🌻 First of all - I fell in love with the cover of the book - it's so beautiful and eye-catching.
🌻 The book revolves around Ravi and Geetanjali, their love switching between the past and present.
🌻 Ravi and Geetanjali are completely different personalities from each other, yet they can find love with each other despite all their differences.
🌻Even though Geetanjali never confessed to him, her actions always warm Ravi's heart and that thing makes their love keep going.
🌻 But their journey was never smooth because sometimes love is not enough.
🌻 Slowly, their love turned into disagreements, depression, and fights.
🌻 Dr. Amit, who was counseling them to save their marriage, tried everything but it seemed like both of them decided in their minds that it would not work out ever.
🌻 Will they be able to save their marriage?
🌻 In most stories, we are used to witnessing the insecurities and pain of women going through a complex love life but how truthfully the author addressed the issues and insecurities faced by men, their emotions, and their state of mind in Ravi's character. It was the highlight of the book for me.
🌻I also adored Arnav and Ravi's friendship.
🌻 This story shows the reality of complex emotions and their impact on our lives.
Lost Edges, finishing this book has brought me to the conclusion about the author's excellent creative endeavor. It has left me completely preoccupied even after flipping its last pages. This novel not only speaks about entangled relationships or crack ups but also expresses suppressed thoughts, self-discovery, and emotional instability.
Another interesting thing that I loved was when the author penned about Kantha and the Beauty of its work, effort, and place. The entire plotline is quite powerful. The writing style is persuasive and will keep the reader's interest intact. The journey of Ravi and Geetanjali has been so well communicated.
Geetanjali and Ravi had a struggling marriage. As one was successful and the other unemployed. The tale has lots of ups and downs..
The author has magically exhaled this story that speaks volumes about many incidences that hamper our fragile minds and heart. The childhood memories, the fast-paced job race, the depression, and failed marriage to ultimately finding peace.
LOST EDGES is an intrinsic tale of love and hope against the backdrop of mental health.
Firstly, I congratulate the author for portraying mental health issues and the complexities of marriage so subtly yet very strongly. The characters are imperfect and the way the story unfolds going back and forth since the characters’ college days and the present is poignant and depressing. Secondly, finding the purpose and healing coming after knowing oneself fully and doing things that matter to that person is a powerful revelation in itself.
What I loved exceptionally about the story was Geethanjali’s character. No matter how much she was going through life herself, her unflinching love for her husband is very moving. And how many Ravis we have known in life who needed help but were never offered?
Salini Vineeth’s writing is fluid and the way she has used colours gives the prose an appealing expression. Lavender was overly projected but, on second thoughts, I feel the very essence of the characters were the colours that the author painted the canvas with her words.
“Lost Edges” is a poignant and beautifully crafted literary gem that captures the essence of love, ambition, and the pursuit of self-discovery. Whether you’re a millennial grappling with life’s uncertainties or simply seeking a deeply moving narrative, this book will undoubtedly resonate with your heart and soul. The book’s portrayal of personal growth and self-awareness is both authentic and inspiring. Geetanjali and Ravi’s journey into their pasts to confront uncomfortable truths serves as a powerful reminder that confronting our own demons is essential for healing and finding purpose.
I got this book as a recommendation in the For You tab on Twitter and it was a random read that I picked up. It turned out to be a pretty decent novel for a first-time author, and given the theme of the plot that goes beyond a mere love slash bad marriage story, it turned out to be a pretty good read
Lost Edges is author Salini Vineeth’s debut novel. It is the story of love buffeted by the realities of life, and people. It is the story of Ravi and Geethanjali who meet in college, fall in love and get married. The novel flits back and forth between the days of college romance – which are not perfect - and 10 years into the future, when their marriage is on the verge of falling apart. The story is narrated alternatively by Ravi and by Geethanjali in a Rashomon style of multiple perspectives across the two time periods. The language of the novel is simple, yet the narration is engaging. I read the entire novel overnight. The first thing that struck me as I read the novel was, “Hey! I know this person!” or “This happened to me.” This is not a coincidence nor is the author familiar with the events in my life. Salini has picked universal themes and made the characters so relatable that it feels like the people on the page are you and I. There is nothing heroic or spectacular in what the characters do. They are not the template stoic people who don’t give up no matter what. Ravi and Geethanjali are ordinary folks like you and I, with the very same flaws and weaknesses. They are the couple who fall in love for reasons one cannot fathom – as it happens in life, who fight, bicker and sulk – like everyday REAL people. This is the strength of Salini’s writing – the protagonists are real people. What Salini has done, and masterfully at that, is to isolate one key facet in the characters – the need to be accepted for who they are – their quest to get it, and the results when they do not get what they want. From this perspective, there are four elements to the story: Need – Quest – Disappointment – Reaction. The Reaction is magnified for impact, the Need is woven in through reminisces and intelligent inclusion of the backstory in the narrative, the Quest reads like a picture-book romance and the Disappointment is shattering. The need is universal and one that every human being, nay, every organism thirsts for – to be accepted as one is, for what one is. Interestingly, both Ravi and Geethanjali have the same need, they were denied it in their growing up years in much the same way. The difference is in the manner in which they handle what is thrust on them. This is shaped by their respective “father” figures: Geethanjali’s strong, independent and assertive mother who walks out of her marriage to realise her dreams and Ravi’s quiet, ever suffering mother. Interestingly, the confident and assertive Geethanjali sets out on the path chosen for her by her mother, while it is the self-doubt riddled Ravi who in an act of rebellion deviates from the path that his father wants to walk him on. Ravi however, does this out of a sense of rebellion and not because his heart is in it. It is while on this quest for acceptance that Ravi and Geethanjali meet, fall in love and marry. This however does not lead to paradise for Geethanjali projects herself and her mother on Ravi and vice-versa. The result is that neither get that which they set out in quest of. This leads to disappointment – in the partner as well as in themselves, resulting in fights, bickering, a complete breakdown of communication and of the relationship. Here, Salini has introduced the angle of mental health – depression, anxiety, feelings of low self-worth and breaks down the taboos associated by making her characters, even the strong ones, seek professional help. This point has also been highlighted in the blurb on the back cover. There needs to be greater acceptance of mental health matters and we need to, as a society, break down the associated taboos. However, Lost Edges is NOT a novel about or for championing the cause of mental health. It is the story of the universal human need to belong and to be accepted. The novel ends on a beautiful note as Ravi and Geethanjali finally accept each other for who they are, and more important, accept themselves for who they are. This gives them true joy and happiness. Will they get back together? Salini leaves that question for the reader to answer. Overall, a lovely story of finding joy through acceptance – of yourself. PS: Why 4 stars and not 5? I liked the author's previous works better, so this is more a 4.5 than 4.0 and this is far better than many other debut/non-debut novels crowding the shelves.
I have known Salini Vineeth for a long time. We are connected via Facebook, and we have even read and reviewed each other’s books long back. Then, last year, Salini contacted me and asked if I would like to edit her upcoming book. I had recently posted that authors could contact me for editing/proofreading their books; probably she saw that. I was free, so I decided to go for it. However, the fact that I have edited this book will in no way influence my review – which is an honest assessment of this book.
Lost Edges is based on two protagonists – Geetanjali, an ambitious contract negotiator, and Ravi, an unemployed software engineer. Having fallen in love in college, they marry soon. But years later, certain insecurities and conflicts creep into their marriage, threatening to tear it apart. The story is about how they delve deep into themselves and resolve to find their way forward in life.
The plot is simple with not too many twists and turns. It oscillates between the past and the present as it slowly reveals the layers of the protagonists. And let me tell you this: the protagonists are some of the best characters I’ve come across in any book till now. They are flawed and real and yet so very likable. I have read a lot of books, but I’ve seldom encountered such well-fleshed protagonists. Even the secondary characters are well-etched and likable. They are going to stay with me for a long time.
The language is simple and lucid. Salini has a great command of the language, and she uses it expertly in the book. She also excels at descriptions. They are vivid, and they never seem excessive; they never slow down the narrative. Be it the sprawling campus of BITS Pilani, the lush landscapes of Goa, the congested streets of Bangalore, or the lazy serenity of Shantiniketan, she captures everything impeccably and transports the reader to the places.
Lost Edges is, by no means, a typical cheesy commercial fiction. It is a mature, layered study of the complexities of human nature and relationships. It focuses on mental illness, and Salini has done thorough research on it, making Lost Edges a thought-provoking read. But you will never feel bored. The intense interactions between the characters, the demons in their mind, and how they tackle them, is captivating. Moreover, Salini is brilliant at conveying emotions. Some scenes brought tears to my eyes. And that sort of clinches it for me. If a book evokes such strong emotions in a reader, it is a special book indeed.
When I read the book for the first time before starting the edits, things were not this rosy. There were some issues with a particular character, and I found the ending a bit underwhelming. I communicated these points to Salini, and we discussed a possible solution. She must have been disappointed to hear such critical feedback, but she kept her feelings aside and worked judiciously on the book. About a month later, Salini came back with the revisions, and I must say, I was amazed. She did a magnificent job, and the book had transcended to a different level altogether.
Now, the ending is brilliantly executed. It is not your typical happily ever after, yet it is extremely satisfying.
Lost Edges by Salini Vineeth is a literary gem. Over the past couple of years, I have read many award-winning, award-nominated books and commercial fiction books, but I have not come across a book as well-written as this.
This is one book that I can blindly recommend to any reader. Please don’t miss this magnificent novel.
"When you let go of someone you love, you think you’ll move on, but nobody really moves on. The love that you lose becomes a permanent hole in your soul"
"Lost Edges" by Salini Vineeth is a meaningful exploration of love, relationships and human nature. Being an emotional drama, it goes beyond the sugary sweetness romance to traverse the sobering reality of relationships, compatibility and mental illness.
The story revolves around Ravi and Geetanjali, two teenagers who met during their stint in college and fall in love with each other. Despite having ups and downs in their relationship, they manage to stick together and get married later. Soon the realities of life strike and insecurities and tussles between them emerged threatening to break their marriage. Will the couple able to rediscover their love for each other and save their marriage?
Lost Edges starts as a youthful love story between two individuals, who have different ideas about love and life. Narrated in a dual point of view format, where on one hand you experience the budding romance between the couple, their love for each other despite their differences. On the other hand, you also experience the pain of falling part, the crushing reality of expectations and ego battles, narrated alternately adding intrigue about the fate of the characters. The writer narrates both the facets of love so elegantly and expertly, you become a part of their journey.
I liked how both Ravi and Geetanjali get to express their point of view conveying their side of the story. The story is incredibly layered; right from the not so happy past of the characters, misplaced expectations and mental health issues, each adding another dimension to the story. The story focuses on the life beyond the happy endings we read in love stories. While their love story is endearing, their falling apart is equally painful, making it a rollercoaster of emotions, much like life, with unexpected twists and happy surprises.
The characters of Ravi and Geetanjali felt so real. From the inhibitions, fears, deep rooted prejudices and their intense feelings for each other, the story brings them to life, making you root for them.
The writing is top notch, not only capturing the complex emotions but also vividly capturing the different locations, from Goa to Bangalore to the small town of Bolpur. The author skillfully tackles the sensitive issue of mental illness. The narrative is fast paced, effortlessly switching between the past and the present. The ending may leave you conflicted but it may be the best ending given the circumstances.
Overall, "Lost Edges" is an emotional story exploring love, seperation, heart break, grief but ending on an optimistic note. This book offers an unique take on love and relationships making it must read for anyone who enjoys a deeply meaningful story.
The emotionally charged and thoughtful short tale "Lost Edges" by Salini Vineeth explores the complexities of romantic love, interpersonal connections, and personal growth. The narrative is about Geetanjali and Ravi, a couple who fell in love when they were teens but are now coping with the challenges and uncertainties of adulthood. While Ravi struggles with everyone leaving his life too soon, Geetanjali was raised with inflated expectations. Before permanently giving up, they both resolve to work on their relationship and make it work. Their history is brought up during the procedure, which disturbs both of their states of mind. How well will they be able to save their failing marriage? I like this book because it was written from two different points of view, allowing the past and present to be recounted simultaneously. Every situation is vividly portrayed by the author's meticulous attention to detail.
The vivid beaches of Goa and the busy streets of Bangalore are only two examples of how the author's writing perfectly portrays the character of various regions. The rich descriptions provide depth to the background and strengthen the plot. Additionally, the author deftly incorporates the concept of "Lost Edges," making comparisons between the hazy lines that define a painting and the hazy borders of interpersonal interactions. Although the novel deals with complicated subjects, it maintains a quick-moving narrative that engages readers. The tale is given depth and substance by the well-researched insights into mental health that accompany the narration. Readers may piece together the characters' experiences thanks to the narrative's non-linear format, which alternates between the past and present.
Since this is a fictitious work, the book's success will depend on several elements, including the author's writing style, character development, and capacity to draw readers into the character's emotional journey. It is challenging to offer a thorough assessment without having a specialized understanding of the book. In general, "Lost Edges" offers a look into Geetanjali and Ravi's problems and feelings as they adjust to maturity and the changes in their life.
The emotional and contemplative story "Lost Edges" by Salini Vineeth examines the complexity of love, relationships, and personal development. Geetanjali and Ravi, a couple who fell in love when they were teenagers but are now dealing with the difficulties and uncertainties of adulthood, are the subject of the story.
Vineeth examines the fears, disagreements, and misplaced goals that have strained their relationship by delving deep into it. In order to portray a genuine and accessible picture of the hardships experienced by millennials in contemporary society, the author deftly navigates topics of mistaken ambitions, mental health problems, and gender disparities.
Geetanjali and Ravi battle their own inner demons as they delve into their pasts and face painful truths. The emotive and genuine narrative of Vineeth engrosses readers in the nuanced nuances of their connection. The characters are well realised and multifaceted, which enables readers to identify with their tribulations and support their development and salvation.
The narrative is given depth and importance by the examination of gender inequality and mental health difficulties, which also sheds light on significant societal challenges. Vineeth's delicate treatment of these subjects lends an extra layer of authenticity and gives readers a clearer grasp of the reasons for and difficulties faced by the characters.
However, because the narrative concentrates on reflection and character development, some readers may find that the tempo of the novel is occasionally slower. In order to offer a more satisfactory finish, the resolution of some story issues may have been further explored.
Overall, "Lost Edges" is a gripping and reflective book that addresses significant subjects with tact and nuance. When Salini Vineeth navigates the difficulties of love, ambition, and personal development, her storytelling talent is on full display. Readers who value character-driven stories and in-depth explorations of the human experience will connect with this book.
Whenever I picked up Lost Edges by Salini Vineeth, the one word which rang in my head was "beautiful". This book is surely a thing of beauty.
Salini's writing is like a soft touch to your forehead; it soothes you. She writes short and crisp sentences which are easy to read and propel you further into the story. I was particularly impressed by the imagery she has drawn with captivating similes and metaphors. Take this for example: "In Thalassery, the monsoon was sad and relentless, like a young widow. In contrast, the Goan monsoon seemed to be capricious. It reminded me of a child who laughed giddily after an avalanche of tears." The entire book is sprinkled with gems like these. The plotting is very skilfully done, with one chapter melting into the next seamlessly, like "lost edges", a title appropriate for the book and the story.
Many reviewers have covered the essential storyline of the book, so I won't go into that. What initially seemed to me a modern romantic story soon turned out to be a saga of our lifetimes. It deals with such mature themes like patriarchy, anxiety and depression, child abuse, the importance and the myths around therapy, finding inner peace and happiness, and how marriages are about supporting each other through thick and thin. Salini's meticulous research and attention to detail is visible when she writes about the nuances of painting and colours, how contract negotiation works, the exquisite scenes of Bolpur house and kantha embroidery workshop, and therapy. As a BITSian who lives in Bangalore, I greatly enjoyed the descriptions of the campus life, as well as the unpredictable weather and traffic of the city. This is the first "first-person" novel I've read, and the style lends intimacy to the accounts of the protagonists, as you feel for them and feel like them. Salini's extensive short-story writing background has surely done wonders here.
Topping up with a beautiful cover and intricate kantha designs over chapter numbers, Lost Edges has been a remarkable reading experience for me. Hats off to Salini for pulling this off, and I'm eager to see more such works of fiction from her.
While love is a vital component of a healthy and fulfilling relationship, it is not the sole factor that determines the success or longevity of a partnership. Several other factors contribute to the overall well-being and sustainability of a couple, thereby creating situations where it alone may not be sufficient if there is a lack of compatibility between partners.
The book, ‘Lost Edges’ by author Salini Vineeth can therefore be said to be the perfect story that showcases how emotional and physical compatibility plays a crucial role in relationship and partners should have a level of understanding, as well as compatibility if they need to sustain long term.
Sparks flew for our two main protagonists, Ravi and Geetanjali, and they bonded so great, it was like theirs would be an epic, once in a lifetime love that would surpass everything and everyone, so it comes quite as a shocker that things did not go well for them and they got so out of control that they had to take the extreme step of separation.
As we delve deeper into the book, we understand what has ensued and get to know that insecurities and conflicts can have a significant impact on relationships, causing stress, strain, and potential damage. And if they are left unaddressed and unresolved, they can gradually erode the foundation of the relationship.
Over time, the strain and negative impact of this become too overwhelming for both the characters, leading to dissatisfaction and potential dissolution of the relationship, hence it was now intersting to see whether these two would be able to work out their differences and move on, or will they drift apart forever.
The ending of the book is not what I was expecting, but it was realistic, acknowledging the complexities and uncertainties of life, presenting a portrayal that feels genuine and relatable. This is the reason why it resonated deeply with me, as it mirrors the real-world challenges and outcomes we encounter, hence I am going to give this FIVE STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Lost Edges" unfolds a poignant tale revolving around Ravi and Geethanjali, who start their journey in college, fall in love, and eventually find themselves seeking therapy to mend the fractures in their marriage. The novel deftly navigates between the past and present, skillfully merging the two to create a comprehensive narrative. The editing is crisp, and the narration, particularly in certain places, is commendable, maintaining the reader's interest throughout the unfolding drama.
The central theme of the story, exploring the challenges faced by modern couples in balancing work and relationships, resonates with the experiences of many adults today. Vineeth captures the nuances of this struggle, providing readers with relatable scenarios that reflect the complexities of contemporary relationships.
However, the characters in "Lost Edges" appear somewhat one-dimensional, lacking the depth that would ground them in reality. This tendency makes them more melodramatic and less relatable to readers seeking well-rounded, authentic portrayals. While the plot is engaging, the characters might have benefited from more nuanced development.
The climax, whether the characters unite or separate, felt overly cinematic and, a tad disappointing. A more impactful and realistic conclusion could have elevated the emotional resonance of the novel. Ravi's character, while initially seeming a bit peculiar with his habit of interpreting everything in terms of colour, gains some understanding when considering his passion for painting.
Despite the well-established love between Ravi and Geethanjali, the 90’s hopeless romantic me, finds yearning for more palpable chemistry between the characters. The portrayal of their relationship, while consistent in expressing their love, may have benefited from additional moments of connection to truly bring their bond to life.
Overall, This book proves to be a captivating choice for readers in search of a narrative that deeply resonates on an emotional level.
A book should not be judged by its cover- despite knowing this, I could not resist picking this book up after seeing this gorgeous book cover. I must admit that author Salini Vineeth has done an excellent job in writing this book 'Lost Edges'.
This book is worth everyone's read and that is why I do not want to give any spoilers. So let me tell you about the plot and the protagonists very briefly.
This story revolves around Geetanjali and Ravi. They fell in love when they were teenagers. Like any other couple, they also try to find comfort in each other. But relationships are not always fairy tales. Sometimes there are many complexities.
In this story Geetanjali is a very ambitious, strong woman - she is a contract negotiator. She always tries to help Ravi who is struggling to build his career - he is unemployed.
Both of them have insecurities and that is affecting their relationship but they do not want to give up just like that.
The story is about them trying to keep the relationship alive. In this process many things will come- their mental health is being affected too. Will they be able to save their relationship?
This book is very relatable to the readers because of various reasons. First of all, it shows that life is not a bed of roses- there are many tough phases in life that we have to overcome. The author has penned down authentic raw emotions through the characters.
Some serious issues, like gender equality, have also been brought into the story.
The author's writing style is so lively that it felt like watching a movie while reading this book.
From character development to the engaging storyline, maintaining the pace, and the lucid language —everything has been done efficiently in this book.
I had a great time reading this amazing book and that is why this is highly recommended from my side.
Salini Vineeth's Lost Edges is a poignant and deeply layered novel that transcends the boundaries of a simple love story. Delving into the complexities of mental health, childhood trauma, and societal expectations, it invites readers on a journey of self-discovery alongside its two flawed yet relatable protagonists.
Geethanjali and Ravi are a study in contrasts. Geethu's ambition and pragmatism mask inner turmoil, while Ravi's sensitivity hides a deep-seated pain born from past wounds. This dynamic forces us to confront our own biases about gender roles and to see the strength within vulnerability.
The heart of Lost Edges lies in its unflinching portrayal of mental health struggles. Ravi's clinical depression is depicted with painful realism, offering a window into the profound desolation of the condition. Geethu's journey as a caregiver illuminates the toll it takes on those who love someone living with depression. This focus on mental health awareness and the potential benefits of therapy make the novel both timely and important.
While some readers might find the characters' flaws frustrating at times, it is precisely their imperfections that render them so believable. Their struggles, missteps, and moments of emotional unavailability feel undeniably human. However, the narrative would benefit from a tighter focus on their individual growth trajectories to counterbalance the weight of their challenges.
Salini's writing shines with evocative imagery and a gentle lyricism, beautifully capturing the essence of both internal and external landscapes. Her meticulous research shines through in the book's exploration of themes ranging from art to therapy to societal constructs.
In my eyes, pick this book and savour it. Like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold morning. Each sip is a pleasure.
