Francis Hopkinson Smith (1838-1915) was an American author, artist and engineer. He illustrated and published numerous travelogues, and his novels and short stories are especially felicitous in their portrayal of the Old South.

this was a travelogue and so very well written but it did become a bit of a bore for me. If you plan to travel to Venice or did so many years ago, then this is your book. It was not a page turner, I had to force myself to keep at it but am glad to have read it.
