I absolutely appreciated this science based book that allows us a peek inside the mind.

With 366 daily activities, we learn the brain is moldable, changeable, improvable!

This book address every care and concern you may have regarding your memory and thought process. Things like shame, concern for pleasing others, ADD/ADHD, trauma, bad habits, addictions and soooooo many more issues are addressed. Tools are given to combat these difficulties in our every day lives so we can work to heal the brain - which heals our whole being.

This is an excellent self-help book that showcases our brain and provides an easy breakdown of how we can help our minds to not only heal, but prevent damage.

ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!

The key words in the title are "Simple Daily Practices" as this book is not a pick up and read from beginning to end text. Instead, it is a compilation of 366 short informative essays on brain health, grouped in thematic sections and written in extremely understandable language with realistic, doable daily actions/assignments. It is intended to be read in daily segments over the course of a year, and as such, it is a must-read for anyone interested in living your best brain-life.

The book made me wish I had easy access to one of the Amen Clinics, so I could have the brain imaging that is featured throughout the book done on my own brain. The transformations that he describes to illustrate different strategies are highly motivating, and most readers will recognize themselves and people they know among the case studies described. The simple daily practices are as touted, simple, and taken with a one-a-day approach will easily make a difference in virtually anyone's health, brain and body.

The only real criticism of the book are the cheesy names for some of the concepts Dr. Amen describes, such as "Taming the Dragons" and "Killing the ANTs". I felt like the tone was a little condescending at times because of this, though it may be only a personal response and did not interfere with my overall recommendation for the book. I saw some value in the terms, as they make the concepts more memorable.

I plan to purchase this book and begin the journey of daily practices just as soon as it publishes. Thank you to Netgalley and Tyndale House Publishers for the digital ARC of Change Your Brain Every Day. The opinions in this review are my own.

I first heard of Dr. Amen on the dairy of a CEO podcast. I was very impressed so I decided to get his book, from the local library of course. However, as I was reading this book my quack meter started going off. Everything seemed a little too simple for me. Have PTSD, take a scan, take some supplements, which he of course sells, and follow his guidelines and all will be alright. Have Alzheimer's, depression, bipolar, schizo, any mental issues, etc he can cure it with his magical scan and some expensive supplements. Now I am not saying everything he is saying is ridiculous but he is over simplifying most of these problems. If it was as easy as he makes it out to be, with his scans, which he does profit very handsomely off of, then every doctor would be doing this. I did some of my own research on his background and what other medical doctors are saying and A LOT of them have skepticism and doubts about his work. So take what he is saying with a grain of salt, or a brain scan haha.
Disclaimer:
I actually didn't read the whole book I got about half way through and got the point. You can only repeat yourself so many times before I stop listening.

This one didn't really work for me. I listened to the audio and I don't recommend that version at all. He goes over 366 ways to achieve better brain health. While that might sound like a "wow" it was so not that. Maybe if you read one a day for a year it would work...but that is not how I like to listen to audios.

That layout paved the way for massive repetition. It felt all over the place. I have another book by this author and I think I'll just have to table it for now. I need time to recover.

I did like his ANTS though, so I'll add a star for that. That brings me to 2 stars.

One of the best books I've read this year.
I'm going to re-read it again and take notes for myself.
There's a ton of great information to learn from in this book.
I've also seen Dr. Amen on the The Diary Of A CEO youtube page which was enlightening.

There are tidbits of valuable information in this book and many things I highlighted but much of it is common sense and an advertisement/encouragement to go get your brain scanned, take supplements, exercise, eat healthy etc.. There are alot of stories of people Dr Amen has treated with pictures of before and after of their brains and was still an interesting read about our brain, how it functions and what we can do to heal or keep it healthy but I think it may discourage someone who knows they need help but just can't afford it.

This book was INCREDIBLE. I was absolutely fascinated by the all the brain scans from various patients dealing with all types of problems like red dye 40, concussions, mold, etc. I love how Dr Amen follows a more holistic approach and only prescribed medication when needed. This was an easy read for anybody who wants to live a healthier life but needs the clinical research and testimonies. So inspiring and I would highly recommend to anybody!!

So I didn't read this book everyday for a year like one is supposed to so I recognize that my input is faulty because I didn't follow the recommendation of the author. I found this book interesting at times. I've never thought about my brain the way Dr. Amen encourages one too. At times the writing seemed heavy handed and I found the name dropping of celebrities obnoxious.

“How to Change Your Brain Every Day” is better than any positive or motivational self-help book I’ve ever read. Every part of who you are—how you think, feel, respond, react—it all comes from your brain. We don’t respond to our brains needs because we never think about our brain. Daniel Amen narrows the focus on your overall brain health and that focus has been absolutely changing for me over the progression of my reading this book.

If you want to have more control over your life, loving and supporting your brain in the ways that Daniel Amen suggests is the best place to start. If you feel like you need to make changes for yourself, if you feel like you want more control and happiness in your life, start with your brain. Start by reading this book and gaining the insight you need to make appropriate changes. This is a book I would read again ten times over as my life progresses. It’s a slow read… there’s a lot to take in and consider and apply. And for those reasons and more, I’ll be revisiting this book in my future to keep me reminded of the practices I need to continue applying.

I absolutely loved reading this! #highlyRecommend

i typically enjoy listening to “self help” or “educational” books in audiobook format, but this one felt a bit all over the place. while i enjoyed the daily practices at the end of each chapter, i think it would have had a better impact on me if i only read one chapter a day. although i enjoyed this aspect of the book, most of the daily practices were very simple ones like take more vitamins and eat better which are practices i could have just come up with myself. overall didn’t get much out of this.

3. Inflamația: Utilizarea regulată a aței dentare pentru a preveni boala parodontală.

“Let’s get started changing your brain in a positive way every day,” writes Dr. Daniel G. Amen, in his new book christened Change Your Brain Every Day: Simple Daily Practices to Strengthen Your Mind, Memory, Moods, Focus, Energy, Habits, and Relationships. “You are not stuck with the brain you have. You can make it better, even if you have been bad to it, and I can prove it. You can literally change your brain, and when you do, you change your life. Over the last 30 years, I’ve ended most of my lectures with the above words. It’s the mission that drives my work. Your brain controls everything you do and everything you are. Each day it is changing. Either it is getting better and growing younger, or it is getting worse and growing older due to your daily diet, supplements, thoughts, decisions, and habits. This daily reader is designed to help you be the master of your brain’s destiny and boost your memory, mood, focus, and overall sense of happiness and peace. Learning to love and care for your brain will also decrease your stress, improve your relationships, increase your chances of success in every area of your life, help you stave off dementia, and prevent you from becoming a burden to those you love,” Dr. Amen also writes, at the beginning of the book. “…Physical health is a daily practice. You cannot be 50 pounds overweight on Monday, have a salad that day for lunch, and expect to be trim by Friday. Ridiculous, right? Physical health takes consistent effort and daily practice over a long time, including eating right, smart supplementation, exercising, managing stress, and making many, many more good decisions than bad ones. Yes, you can take pills to help manage the diabetes, hypertension, and chronic pain that result from making many bad decisions, but they won’t give you the energy and vitality you want…If you want to feel happier and more relaxed; if you want to be cognitively sharper and lower your risk for Alzheimer’s disease as Leeza did, it will take developing consistent brain and mental health practices over time. Change Your Brain Every Day will show you how. In this book I share the daily practices I’ve learned on the other side of the neuropsychiatrist’s couch (neuropsychiatrists are psychiatrists who believe brain health is foundational to helping their patients heal and thrive). For more than 40 years, I’ve worked with children, teenagers, and adults seeking to overcome anxiety, depression, obsessions, compulsions, addictions, anger, past emotional trauma, past head trauma, relationship issues, and memory and learning problems. This volume condenses those 40 years of knowledge and experience into a step-by-step, daily journey of brain optimization and healing. I use these daily practices in my life and encourage those around me to do the same.”

By making things clear and concise, other effective attributes Amen demonstrates simultaneously shine through. Particularly his penchant for making things personal, and showing he is in no way hypocritical to the practices he preaches.

That’s to be commended.

The concept of learning something everyday and having a small brain exercise daily is a good concept, but like most people I believe, I actually read the whole thing at once rather than one chapter a day and didn't do the task. As such the impact was lessened because I found the whole thing repetitive, and the tasks basic. Some of the information our advice can be good but most felt deja vu to me. Maybe to recommend to someone starting out with self-help literature.

Longtime TV reporter and talk show host Leeza Gibbons lost both her mother and grandmother to Alzheimer's Disease. She began to worry that she may suffer the same fate, especially when she started experiencing memory lapses and brain fog that comes with getting older. World-renowned psychiatrist Daniel Amen suggested she come to his clinic for a SPECT brain imaging scan, one of the best ways to determine future likelihood of getting the disease. Her brain scans showed several areas of very low blood flow, which meant she would most likely be diagnosed as well...unless she started taking small actions each day to change her brain. Ten years later, her brain scan was dramatically healthier.

This book is designed to be read over the course of a year, with each day providing information on small actions you can take that will lead to big changes over time. Dr. Amen tells true stories of people who suffered for years and had no idea what was wrong with them until they had one of these SPECT scans that revealed the source of the problem. (I was surprised to learn that brain scans are rarely ordered by mental health professionals, even psychaitrists, but Dr. Amen is a notable exception).

Whether you're concerned about aging and memory loss or brain health issues (he prefers this term over "mental health") like anxiety and depression, the advice in this book is invaluable and serves as a "reference book" that you can turn to again and again.

"You are not stuck with the brain you have. You can make it better, even if you have been bad to it," Dr. Amen says. "And I can prove it. You can literally change your brain, and when you do, you change your life."

Summary

A nice book that makes you reflect on the power of mindset and its impact on our lives. The author takes the reader on a 365-day (a full year) worth of transformation, unveiling the potential within each of us to change our lives through the power of our thoughts. Every single day has an exercise that the author sets for the reader, challenging our beliefs at times. It is strongly advocated for the importance of mindfulness, self-reflection and the intentional cultivation of positive thoughts and habits. The author is strongly involved in the subject, and this allows him to connect with the reader. The book provides a lot of anecdotes, with real-life stories of people who got better by simply following the author’s suggestions and practices.

My evaluation

What did I like the most?

The short summaries of the good ruler and bad ruler that the author presents throughout the book. What would a good ruler do to improve people’s situation? What would a bad ruler - who has the intention of making us sick and stupid - do to worsen people’s situation? Many of the things going on in our world, unfortunately, are more aligned with what a bad ruler would do, for profit (most likely).
What didn’t I like?

For someone - like me - who reads or listens to a lot of self-help/improvement books, some aspects of this book might sound redundant, obvious, or really simple.

What would I have done differently?

Cover the really simple or most-known ideas/concepts and techniques with more depth, giving more real-story examples.

Daniel Amen MD is a true leader in the fields of psychiatry and neuroscience. He presents information from his experience of over 40 years. In the book, Change your Brain Every Day, he presents daily habits that you should do in order to preserve your happiness and brain health. This book addresses everything from thinking habits, to blood flow, nutrition, and how to implement positive habits. The message entwined throughout the book is a positive one, that you can make changes every single day to improve your mind, your life, and therefore, your happiness. I like how the book is broken down into daily bite sized doses. This makes it easy to read, follow, and implement in your daily life. Dr. Amen explains that just as physical health is a daily practice, so is improving your mental/brain health. If you want to feel happier, more alive, and cognitively healthy, you must exercise those skills, similarly to how you would exercise physically. This was an interesting concept to read and think through. This book was an insightful read in how to improve your health. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance review copy in exchange for my honest review.

There are few good tidbits in here, but overall, it was a huge disappointment.

Dr Amen's main points are good, but they could have been covered in about 60 pages. Because he was trying to share info and tips each day, this became repetitive and there was way too much nonsense filler, such as "Good Ruler vs. Evil Ruler". There's way too much about his wife, and there was a little too much religion mixed in for my liking. Much of what he suggests depends on getting one of his brain scans, and how many of us can afford to travel to his clinic to do that?

I would have preferred if the days were labeled "January 1", "January 2", etc., but instead of they're labeled "Day 1", Day 2". I'm sure this is so you can start at any point in the year, but there are times when I missed a couple days, and I lost track of where I was supposed to be in the book.

I started on January 1st and gave up in September, because I found it more frustrating than informative. I'm surprised I made it as far as I did.

I borrowed the audio version of this book and thoroughly enjoyed the insights and lessons gleaned from this book.

My only regret is that I hadnt bought a copy of the book so that I could read each day and then implement the lessons in a day by day manner.

I found the narrative easy to understand and provided so many solutions that all of us can put into action for free. I know I am going to be an even better role model for my kids and grandchildren moving forward.

I think this is a book that readers would benefit from reading multiple times over or having their own copy. I know I am now going to seek out a hard copy version.

So many lessons in this book, thank you to Daniel G Amen for bringing this work to life with so many real life examples to outline just how easy it is to change your brain for the positive.

I have to give this book 5 stars because there’s a wealth of information that you won’t often find elsewhere. Broken down into 365 days, not every day is exciting or super helpful or for everyone. But no one could change that much in their lives nor does the author believe you should. Just keep reading til you come to something relevant in your life, which should be often, and implement that. A huge takeaway— the brain is a physical organ that relies on nutrition and blood flow and many many people have issues that shouldn’t be blamed on them but need a physiological correction. Dr. Amen is on to something big and the medical community should pay attention to his perspective.

Overall, this is filled with lots of useful information about improving brain health. However, it was not in the format that I expected. I thought it would be a "tip a day" type of book that condensed the massive amounts of information from his other books into a simple action or tip for the day. Unfortunately, the book read a tomb of endless verbiage that felt like reading a 900 page novel.

One interesting thing I learned from this book was that some of our mental problems can be inherited from past generations, even things such as anxiety, fear, depression, etc. I had no idea! Makes it even more important that we all keep up on our mental health.

Easy listen - intended to be a series of 366 daily readings (thus "Every Day ").

The core insight is that you can improve the condition of your brain - an important concept not only for people who have damaged their brains with drugs and anxiety, but more significantly, for people who have genetic disposition for alzheimer's, etc.

The author discovered (via comparative brain scans) that his mother's brain was much younger than his. However, with the regimen recommended in this book, he was able to heal his brain. Many of the suggestions involved diet, exercise, rest, and other common healthy lifestyle recommendations.

I gave up on this book. For me, it was too generic with no real strategies other than “eat better” and “take supplements” but doesn’t give specifics on what those would be. I would have loved a meal plan or list of supplements to try. Maybe that was coming later in the book and I gave up on it too soon. It also gives a daily reflection question such as, “What could a healthier brain help you do better and more effectively?” I like the idea of the reflection question but felt I could have come with most of the questions myself and had no hints on answers from the book.

If you follow Dr. Amen on Instagram, you know what this man is all about! I enjoy his short video clips but enjoyed this book even more as he goes into more depth and science behind the Why's and importance of his teachings. I found the science behind his work fascinating that aligned with the health tips that followed. Make no mistake, this is a self care book! It is great resource for personal development to incorporate the findings into your lifestyle. I would recommend a physical copy to take notes.
