I think a more proper rating for this is three and a half. I'm not sure who thought it was a great idea to kill the "original" Red Sonja and proceed to have her reincarnated decades later as a noblewoman who has her family massacred by the lover of her sister. Yes, it's an attempt to adapt THE SHADOW OF THE VULTURE a bit more faithfully but I think Roy Thomas' classic character deserved better than this. On the other hand, the story is extremely well-told and the art is fantastic as always. Still, it's not "my" Red Sonja and I'm glad they rebooted her with Gail Simone.

I liked the first part of this book, the Sonja Reborn part. The Blood Dynasty hunt was disappointing and all that build up for an epic battle ended in two pages. I would have liked to see more battling.

Better than I was expecting. I suspect that some--possibly even the majority--of Sonja readers aren't as interested in the story so much as the art. I certainly won't deny that the sight of a beautiful redhead in a chainmail bikini doing thought-provoking things is a sight to stir the blood. The artwork is every bit as lovely as you'd expect, and the story is surprisingly decent considering it's probably at best of secondary importance to many readers. On the whole, this was a decent, if unmemorable, book.
