Rate this book
Piper Addison has three problems: a broken espresso machine, malfunctioning magic, and a dead body. Guess which one she doesn’t see coming?

One month from forty, Piper Addison thinks she finally has life figured out. Sure, her bank account could be fuller and the cafe she opened with the last of her savings could use some help, but what’s a few kinks for an Orchard Hollow witch?

Too bad Piper can’t witch to save her life, which is exactly what she might need to do when a dead body is discovered in the alley behind her cafe. To make matters worse, all the evidence points to Piper and the local sheriff is not too keen on the town’s paranormal inhabitants.

When a mysterious envelope lands on Piper’s doorstep, she has a decision to go behind the sheriff’s back and try to clear her name, or spend her fortieth birthday in a prison cell.

A Grave Roast is a paranormal cozy mystery complete with an unlucky witch, a ghost familiar, and a feisty raccoon with a talent for getting into sticky situations.

I really wanted to like these books, but the idea of a wild raccoon in a coffee shop grossed me out. The author took great pains to mention that the raccoon would go directly from crawling around in the industrial garbage bin to the shop where it would get into the food displays. She described the raccoon tracking in used coffee grounds and blood- leaning so hard into the trash panda aspect of the story that she wrote an entire chapter from the raccoon’s perspective. Apparently health codes aren’t an issue in Orchard Hollow and the fmc cannot outwit a raccoon.

I tried reading the second book in the series to see if the writer was going to tune up her concepts, but around the point that the fmc tossed a guy’s salad because she is so clumsy that she plunges her face fully into men’s rear ends before dropping to the ground to belly crawl on the street to eavesdrop on a conversation the silliness was too much. The side story about havjng hired a 2nd employee who is also absolutely awful at her job in every possible way was cringe. I don’t understand why fmc’s cannot be minimally competent. Yikes.

I love a light paranormal book and this one fit the bill and was fun to read. Piper Addison is a witch and a loner, she doesn’t have a coven or many friends but she loves her home town, her farmhouse and her cafe. Piper’s magic isn’t cooperative and her familiar has serious attitude but she is determined to get to the bottom of a murder the police have ruled an accident and warming to the idea of finding a way to be happy and figure out her own power.
Thank you Book Sirens for the opportunity to read this advanced readers copy. I hope there are more books with these characters and hope Piper grows up and lives her own life with her new found understanding.

I just finished my ARC (advanced reader copy) of A Grave Roast and I loved it! It was a fun and delightful read. I had to slow myself down because I didn't want it to end. I enjoyed how the author described this small town and its inhabitants. I was intrigued by the relationships between neighbours, and how the readers were treated to delectable tidbits of information. Piper is a lovable flawed character with a sassy familiar and curious cafe mascot. I can only hope that more mysteries need to be solved by Piper, with her adorable sidekicks, and perhaps a love interest.

A Grave Roast by A.N. Sage sees Piper Addison traversing Orchard Hollow without her grandma, that was helping her get her magic.

Can Piper solve the mystery without getting into trouble?

Piper Addison
Piper Addison is turning forty, lost her grandma recently, and started a new business venture. Did I also mention that she's a witch? Yeah, she's that too, but unlike the other witches and paranormal creatures in Orchard Hollow, Piper has quite a hard time getting her magic to cooperate. Oh, and instead of having a regular familiar, she has a ghost. The ghost is also the only one that she can see, sadly. Piper gets told by an acquaintance to meet her at her new coffee shop, which is closed due to one malfunctioning expresso maker, and is found dead in her back alley. The police think Piper might have something to do with it, and so Piper is on the case to figure out what happened to him.

Piper is quite the character in how she presents herself to the rest of the community and tries to let the other witches know that she isn't concerned about her lack of magic in public when in reality, she does. I think Piper is a fascinating character, and I can't wait to see what she gets into in the next book.

The Mystery
Piper finds a dead body in her back alley, and it isn't good in the eyes of the police. So, to keep herself out of jail, Piper has decided to solve this case for the police, especially after the sheriff decides it was an accidental overdose after seeing the coroner's report. Piper soon learns that the dead guy's death could be connected to another case that was ruled as a natural cause of death. Are they connected, or is Piper just making things up? I have to say that I pegged many things but not the killer or their motive. Now that motive was a plot twist that I never saw coming.

Four Stars
My rating for A Grave Roast by A.N. Sage is four stars. I'm also recommending it to anyone that wants to read a new take on a cozy culinary paranormal mystery. Ms. Sage has created an interesting lore for this series, and I can't wait to read more about Orchard Hollow and Piper. Who knows, maybe Piper will see many things differently and learn more about her magic.

There is a recipe in the back for a drink called Mocha a la Joe.

Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of A Grave Roast by A.N. Sage.

Until the next time,

3.5. I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. It did have some issues with the writing and narrative voice, I didn't like the way there was a lot of exposition done in dialogue and the character explaining things to us felt a little unnatural. I also found elements of this to be somewhat predictable and I wasn't blown away by the twists and turns at all. However, this was just such a fun book, a gripping little murder mystery to follow and a cosy paranormal world with interesting characters. I'll definitely consider continuing the series on ebook when I need something that I can just rely on to be easy and a great time.

Piper Addison has taken a risk and opened a coffee shop with a hefty loan from the bank, secured against her inheritance of her grandmother's home and with the last ounce of her savings. In the small town of Orchard Hollow there is no coffee shop, and a lot of tourists, how can she not make it work? For starters, a broken espresso machine, a dead body, a marauding raccoon, oh and magic that is on the blink.

Piper thought she was getting her life on track just as she was close to turning forty. She is a witch with no coven, in a town full of supernatural beings. She has lost her mother to black magic, her beloved grandmother passed away, so save for her ghost familiar and Harry the raccoon who breaks into the coffee shop with all the skill of a master burglar she is pretty alone. So when the body is found in the alley behind her coffee shop, with all the evidence pointing towards her, things are not looking good. The sheriff is human and not too keen on the town’s paranormal population, so is reluctant to listen to Piper’s theories. Then a mysterious package lands on Piper’s doorstep, and she has no option but to team up with the hunky new bookstore owner, and try to clear her name. But what other secrets will she find in the process?

I thoroughly enjoyed this read. It was fun, funny, lighthearted (as murder can be), yet very entertaining. Piper is not your typical hero, she is a single lady, older, struggling with life, yet finding ways to keep being herself. Add in being a witch, an entrepreneur, trying to date, and trying to get off the hook for a murder she didn’t commit, she was a very atypical heroine. The snippets about her mother, grandmother, and the paranormals in the town were tantalising teasers, leaving you wanting to know more, and get into further stories. The murder plot had some good twists to be solved, and the ending definitely left you wanting more. Roll on book two in the Orchard Hollow Series!

This was a cute light hearted cozy paranormal mystery. I enjoyed the characters, with Harry the raccoon being my favorite. Who wouldn’t love murder, magic and a Houdini ninja creature!

Piper Addison has opened a coffee shop in Orchard Hallow, a magical town filled with secrets. There are witches and warlocks, paranormals and ghosts galore. The weird thing is that the paranormals don’t like each other. Piper is a witch without a coven. She doesn’t have friends and just wants to make coffee and go home. Her magic is on the fritz and to make things even weirder, her familiar is a ghost.

She receives a mysterious phone call from one of the warlocks in town and then finds his body behind her shop. The sheriff doesn’t like or trust paranormals and sets his sights on Piper as the killer.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is the funniest book I have EVER read. I have constantly been giggling, to full on laughing my behind off. Piper is so incredibly clumsy and relatable. Then there's Harry Houdini (including a raccoon POV! I was crying laughing here omg), and ofcourse the sarcastic Stella. All 3 mains are so likeable, I didn't want to put the book down.
The storyline itself was a great, easy read. It had a little plottwist, and throughout the mystery it kept me guessing.
I absolutely adore this book and can't wait to read more of Sages work!

A GRAVE ROAST by A. N. Sage
The First Orchard Hollow Mystery

Piper Addison isn't much of a witch. At almost 40 her magical ability is fairly abysmal. She's a solitary witch looked down upon by the mean girls of the local coven, and instead of a nice cat or other animal, her familiar is a snarky ghost. On the upside, she's just opened her own coffee shop, Bean Me Up, and customers are flocking in to get caffeinated. At least until her espresso machine breaks down, she discovers a dead body behind the shop, and the sheriff shuts her down. Piper will soon have more than wonky witchcraft and broken appliances to deal with as she becomes even more involved with the murder and starts investigating on her own.

A GRAVE ROAST introduces readers to a misfit witch in a paranormal world. You can't help but feel for Piper, who, even at almost 40, is still subjected to mean girls. I think her doubts about herself and her powers as well as the feeling of having no one to rely on resonates with people. On a positive note, the joy she finds in reaching a dream, especially one that allows her to show some distinctive parts of her personality to the world, resonates as well. While Piper may feel alone-she does have two primary beings in her life-Harry and Stella. I love Harry Houdini, the rascally raccoon who continually breaks in to Bean Me Up to steal treats. We get to read one chapter from his point of view. I wish there was more as it brought better understanding and meaning to his role in the book. While Stella comes off as snarky, she truly is helpful and well meaning... and, well, snarky. There's more to her than meets the eye, however. The same can be said for Joe. The almost slapstick physical encounters with Piper made me laugh and I love how he wants to become involved and help in her investigation. I hope they can work through the bombshell he drops at the end of the book.

The mystery itself is compelling and Piper's involvement is understandable. I love how we slowly start to learn more about her and the world of Orchard Hollow.

With humor, lots of coffee, and an intriguing mystery, A GRAVE ROAST is a fun first foray into a magical world.

This is a light, fun cozy full of paranormals like witches (and more). Piper is a (almost) 40 year old witch who is trying to run a cafe and gets caught up in a murder on her back step. A murder that she comes close to getting blamed for. When the sheriff declares the death an accident, Piper knows in her gut there is more to it and goes into sleuth mode. She also has a ghost familiar and a pesky raccoon who consistently breaks into her cafe to steal treats.

The story was a fun one to read with a satisfying ending, but there were a few things that threw me off. First of all, one chapter was in the raccoon’s POV - totally unnecessary. Completely pulled me out of the story. Also, a bit better editing is needed for tense changes (all over the place) and things like that. And although Piper is 40, she comes across as much younger than that.

All that being said, the story was entertaining and I will be looking for more from this author.

Pushing-forty Piper has just opened a café, but everything is going wrong. Her second-hand expresso machine has broken down, her mother has joined a coven practicing black magic, and despite her heritage, Piper can't control her magic what little magic she has. Her familiar is - a snarky ghost?? At least the new bookstore owner is quite interesting - and good-looking too. When a good friend is found murdered in back of the store, she is the prime suspect and she uses her paranormal knowledge to search for clues. Sometimes a bit wordy, but enough twists and clues and interesting characters to make this enjoyable. - I received an advance copy and freely leave this honest review.

Enjoyable read.

Incompetent Witch check ghost familiar check thieving racoon invading the coffee shop check and a couple of magical murders check. Complex but funny storyline based in Orchard Hollow where the paranormal hide in plain sight with murder mystery magic and lots of snark add in humour and a budding romance and you have the eminently readable book. On the downside, there are quite a few typos and it would benefit from decent editing but if you put that aside it's a great read, Baz.

It had great potential

This book had a fun foundation, a great start, and a likeable main character. However, just as the author would get the reader into the rhythm and flow, she would make glaring grammatical errors and word choices that made no sense, yanking the reader right out of the story.

Although the denouement was well done, I will not be continuing the series until the services of a competent editor and proofreader have been engaged. It is simply too frustrating.

Surprise it's not whom you think it is!

Good character development you become a great supporter for the main character and rise up and down with her moods and adventures and her finding out the "who done it keeps you engrossed in the story! A side note writing from a raccoons point of view was most unusual and interesting as I haven't encountered anything like it before this story!!!

An intriguing and fun cozy mystery that will keep you guessing until the end. It has lots of humour and I loved the lead characters, human and raccoon alike. The story is still putting a smile on my face just thinking about it.
Highly recommended!

Piper

Piper opens a Cafe shop after her gran death. But the shop coffee maker and her magic both have problems. And she's just found a dead body at her shop. Just another day in Orchard Hallow a town full of magic and possibilities. A cute first book in this new cozy mystery series. Can't wait to see what Piper and Stella is up too next.

Just not for me.

The premise sounded interesting, however I just didn’t enjoy this as much as I’d hoped. I wasn’t connecting to the characters, Harry Houdini was a pest, I didn’t care for any of the mystery, and just found the whole thing frustrating. Not terrible, just not for me.

A Whole Lot Of Fun!

A new author for me. A delightful paranormal series book one. Lots of twists and turns. Lots of fun. Lots of entertaining characters including a witch with wonky powers and a new book store owner who used to be a criminal defense attorney. A raccoon with a never ending need for treats and a ghostly familiar. Looking forward to book two in the series!

Cute, Enjoyable,

Fun book with some laughs especially when it comes to Houdini. We've got a lackluster witch who may not have much magic but she's got plenty of determination and tenacity. Who killed Dan? Why did he leave her a "if you're reading this" envelope? Its not like they were good friends after all she's a witch and he was a warlock. Great job. Thank you.

Great fun read

I enjoyed this book. It was very different than most cozy mysteries I have read because of Harry the raccoon. I also liked the slow growing relationship with the bookseller Joe. I did figure out who the killer was but not a big deal. I do want to see more POVs for Harry. I think that was creative at the beginning.

The author is a good writer who created unique characters and a well-thought-out world. I would like to read more by the author; I just can't get over the raccoon all over the cafe. Based on the covers, it's in the rest of the series. To keep reading, I might just have to lie to myself that it's a magical raccoon without germs that is getting into the food....

Witches, Vampires, a raccoon, and murder. Orchard Hollow is a weird little town. Took me forever to read because I kept getting distracted by a more interesting book. I don't think I'll read more in the series.

A fun cozy mystery. I like this series and the way Piper stumbles through her magical (or lack there of) life. Witches and other magical beings in a small town, coffee shop, bookstore, a raccoon, and a ghost! It's all the cozy things and a story worth turning the pages for.
