This book is written in what seems to be a southern accent, and a ratchet dialect. A female lead character who’s bisexual and confused is narrating. She claims to be college educated and a lesbian, but her relationship with the pro ball player proves otherwise. The ending is a surprise, but I had to finish the book to see who she ended up with because this is a love triangle with a man and a woman.

My only constructive feedback is that there is way more telling than showing. I felt like I was listening to a Ted talk speech, as opposed to an engaging story. This book is 80% exposition with very little dialogue. A lot of repetition occurs in a sense that she stresses that she’s college educated in every chapter. It doesn’t take away from my rating because the concept was unique, and so is the writing style. The MC is also quirky and interesting.

Me.
With a ni**a.
Would miracles never cease?

Real talk, no lie. That's what we used to say back in the days when we were about to break it down for real, for real. Lol. This book broke it down.
Denzel's D*** was definitely a different kind of read for me...gritty is an understatement. However, once I got into the storyline, I was surprisingly pulled into their world. I am always down for a good coming-of-age, and this one gave that type of vibe in its own way.
With its title, I'll admit, I was apprehensive. Once I moved past the explicit language, I grew to appreciate the author's fresh intake on the thoughts and voice of a young woman exploring sexuality, relationships, and life goals. In the end, love is love. "Like, he wuz such a good person." Kudos. As author DeAndra Bernard's craft grows, I can see great things for her. She's a great storyteller, and I hope to see more soon.

Unique, and thought provoking!

I actually liked this a lot!!! I wasn't sure about it at first because of the cant, so it took me about 30 pages to get into it, but when I did, I was all the way in. Dria was so interesting in her thoughts and in the end loyal to herself. She knew what she wanted, and didn't settle for anything less. Now, Kiki on the other hand... Well, maybe Kiki was loyal to herself too! Felt a bit bad for Benz though.

I wasn't expecting to like this, seeing as I'm a white guy from the UK. I'd not heard many people in my life say the words Ni**a & Bitch**, but this story has a lot of those words. But I am open-minded so I gave it a read. To my surprise, I was drawn into the story after getting to grips with the street talk chat from the main character. I felt myself living alongside her, talking like I lived in New York...
So, well done to the author for grabbing my attention & letting me live like the main character inside my mind for a while.

Dria's Benz

I loved the storyline and how the author touched on colorism, sexual preference and entrepreneurship. I truly loved the character Benz and appreciated how the author described him and made him so much more than just a baller. It was a little difficult at times to stay focused because of the way the author chose to execute the storyline but she definitely threw me for a loop with the ending. The title is definitely appealing but doesn't really match the content.

Not my usual read...

...but thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Dria, the narrator, is smart, ever-evolving, and funny as hell. Her voice is still ringing in my head, an ear worm that I have no wish to shake.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when this book was recommended by a fellow author but what I found was a very good story well told. I found myself getting caught up in the main character’s story and wanted to follow it to the end. A number of reviewers have mentioned the vernacular, but I didn’t find it distracting. It gave me the sense that the character was sitting across from me telling me the story. If someone is familiar with Rap, the vernacular won’t be a problem. The author provides plenty of hints as to where the story might be going, so I wasn’t sure where it would end up, but I found the ending satisfying and in character for all involved. A great story that I highly recommend for anyone wanting to hear a familiar tale from a different voice.

Leaving Something to Be Desired

I thought it might’ve just been me, but when I checked some other reviews, I realized I was in good company when I say this: the title is misleading. The title suggests an erotica story and a STRONG one at that. The sex scenes in this book leave something to be desired and there’s no character in this book named Denzel. You find out over halfway through the book where the title even came from, and it’s only mentioned in that paragraph or two and never again. Also the book was very hard to get into from the beginning because it’s written in first person and the main character’s heavy slang is difficult to follow. The story itself was okay, but because it felt like it was missing something, I’d call it mediocre at best.

Wow! Just wow... This book took me on a trip of nostalgia. I was born and raised in NYC, so the language used didn't bother me at all. In fact, it was a welcomed change in pace. This is one heck of a crazy story, but one that fits in with reality. What I really enjoyed was that the story was told as if the main character was sitting right next to me.

It was a slow start but in a good way. That's because the payoff was well worth it. She eventually goes on her separate way, small spoiler. However, I like that the story hits on many real-life tropes that I went through in my personal life.

A bit different from what I normally read, but I'm glad I took a chance.

Great read

Dria monologues, first person, narrator style, and does it in her native slang. At first, I wondered if I could take the slang, but soon found myself listening to her, her accent, her way of expressing herself, and I was stood next to her as she described her surroundings, and who was affecting her as she passed through life.
A glimpse of a type of life I didn't know existed, and written in that lifestyle. A learning experience for me, and maybe for you. Well worth a read.

Excellent Storytelling...

This book is certainly a wild ride! I loved the way this author pulled into her world. She is unapologetically graphic. However, she is such a great writer, you'll find yourself eagerly turning the pages. You have to adore a book that mentions saxophonist John Coltrane, and basketball titan Wilt Chamberlin. I would recommend this book to ages 18 and older.

it starts out slow but who doesn't like a slow burn romance

It's a slow burn and I love how it ended with her going their separate ways. Dria was an amazing character with a lot of confidence and I won't lie I originally was turned off by some of the language but as I went on I found it to be funny and giving her more of a dynamic of who she is.

pretty good read!

This read started off a little slow for my liking. This book was definitely different than any I've read so far. This writers style took me back to real street lit days when everything was Rough and gritty. I like that! Once I was able to get into the storyline I was hooked! I look forward to reading more from this author

Don’t let the title trick you, this is much more than erotica or comedy. This is the urban lit I favor, easy-to-read phonetic slang, backstory w/ style, everything in moderation, a femme dyke MC who knows who she is but plays the game. She knows how to come correct to get a baller (play the game, don’t be entitled) if she wants those diamonds. This is a pretty conversational set-up so I’d love to see it on Audible. This is Tik Tok modern, Brooklyn setting, cute vocab drop-ins and analyzation. We keep hearing about her “shadow,” another fine girl she’s been into for a minute, and she’s so not this ex-NBA dude, except his body IS banging… They pull girls together, and he leaves her his number, which she shrugs off.

It’s interesting she brings up men will fake gay to get closer to her, figuring she’s too girly not to be your average bi girl. But she isn’t in anyway. Not even her job is ordinary, she has a secret process of fixing baldness w/ eggs & a treadmill! The only things I’d improve on are explaining the how having straight feelings make her feel gay thing sooner/weird she said Cis like she was trans, and being defensive a little too much. Yet I’m so glad this book came into my life cuz I’ve read like 50 street lit books and was just about to give up, thinking I read every flavor, but naw.

It took a while for me to get on board with Dria, our protagonist. But this girl bleeds. It's a book of choices, and how she sees and evaluates the people around her. I think she does some growing up by the end of the book and I found myself rooting for her all the way. Yeah, we’ve got the hot, raunchy sexiness that it says on the can—but what it doesn’t say is that we’ve got depth and values and opinions, too.

If the title bothers you, don’t go any further because you probably won’t like the style—but that might be a shame because the book isn’t as it seems. This story is written in its entirety in black culture urban slang and is a great example of excellent writing and storytelling. This one’s my surprise book of the year.

While it might not be to everybody’s taste, (read the can, guys!) it was very well written. There’s a real gem hidden in there, and the shades of sensitivity come at you from left side.

This book’s written by an author who has been around the spelling, grammar and punctuation block—twice! It was a surprising read, and I didn't expect the writing, or the story to be as good as it is.
We even have the surprise ending. A solid 5 stars.

good story

This was a good story. It was hard for me to understand who was talking because of the wording and the dialogue was a bit confusing. Over all I liked the concept behind the book & can’t wait to see what else the author has in store.

This book hit the ground running and I followed it the whole way! It's been a long time since I actually "felt" something about characters in a book so that part was really refreshing. This story was good wall to wall.

Wow!

Raw. Erotic. This story line was compelling. The author uses street dialect that was easy to follow. It’s a fast and interesting read. The main character was so well done that I felt I was inside her mind at times.

a unique style

I’ve read a few erotica, (don’t judge) and being more of an action fan, I have found that something is needed to make the books stand out from what is often a formulaic mix. (A character with a developed motive, a story that pushes the two live interests together in a series of somewhat believable circumstances, and some kind of well developed setting)
Here, I think the author makes a bold move in authentic modern language mixed with some 4th wall break interactions.
A fair warning to readers: if profanity is a turn off, or if you need your language traditional, this might not be your best bet. This is not to say the author isn’t able to do traditional written language. If you know what you’re seeing along the way, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that it’s a deliberate stylistic decision. Knowing that, it actually makes the book more enjoyable.
Also, I enjoyed the shift in the relationship between Dria and Benz. There’s backstory that creates curiosity, there’s learning experiences that lead to better respect shared, and enough steam and spice to heat it up.
Very good job, DeAndra Bernard

The title says it all!

This was a great unexpected read. I loved Dria's realness and the fact that she stood on business. I wished her and Benz would have had an happy ending but at least they were honest with each other. If you are any type of basketball fan this will be a great read for you because of the basketball references throughout. Definitely a great read!

The LL Cool J of modern day writing

A raw, dark and erotic novel that dives into a world of underground urban living. The author fearlessly tells a tale that explores themes of sex, bisexuality, and the complexities of modern day relationships.

Great book.

The author has created an exciting story that flowed well and kept me wondering how it would end. The author has written the book in street slag, and it felt like it could be a real story. I would recommend this to others.

Nostalgic Read with Authentic Urban Flavor

This is a captivating journey through culture and authenticity. It reminded me of Brownsville-Brooklyn, as it resurrects memories and emotions tied to a place left behind. The African American vernacular writing style is a powerful testament to the impact of genuine storytelling and the power of authentic storytelling deeply rooted in culture.

Dria Reynolds, the protagonist, is a force of nature, navigating life with street-smart wit and humor. Her snarky and gritty personality reflects the essence of her urban upbringing. Additionally, her journey through entrepreneurship, relationships, and college, or her unique interpretation of it, is a rollercoaster of emotions. The narrative's exploration of fleeting social media fame adds a modern twist to the tale. Dria's character is a testament to the resilience and adaptability that comes with growing up in her culture.

The book's style and Dria's character inspire the reader to consider the possibilities of crafting an authentic narrative rooted in culture. Specifically, reading this is making me as an author consider writing a book with Jamaican dialect- patwa alone in the narrative prose since I didn’t have the guts to do it in my last publication and only did it mostly in the characters’ dialogue trying to appeal to English-speaking audiences. It serves as a reminder that authenticity in storytelling can open doors to new and exciting literary avenue. Anyhow, the lesson learned is simple yet profound: staying true to oneself opens doors to the seemingly impossible and also humbled you. "Denzel's D*ck" is a reminder that authenticity is the key to unlocking one's potential

crazy!

Good book if you like slang writing, sex, and modern day relationship issues. It keeps you wanting to read more to find out which way the bi sexual character ends up choosing.

This is not a book I would choose to read. However, it did keep me interested and wanting to read more.I must say I skipped the sexual parts for I don’t believe in reading or putting that in front of my eyes, but the relationship part of the book was written well and keep me reading more.

Written in slang hood language, which I found interesting because it added realization to a way of life. As a Christian it was hard to read but for a secular audience it would be a great read.

Out of the Box.

"Denzel's D*ck" offers a refreshing twist on the typical romantic comedy, immersing readers in a raw and gritty urban environment. The story revolves around a lesbian female who leaves college to pursue her dream of starting a hair business. What sets this novel apart is its unique writing style, making you feel like you're engaged in a casual conversation with the main character herself.

What truly stands out is the unconventional point of view. Instead of the usual focus on the professional basketball player, the narrative shines a light on the seldom-explored perspective of the girl he falls for. It's a rarity to witness the experiences of a lesbian woman in an urban setting, making this book a valuable addition to the literary landscape.

"Denzel's D*ck" is a must-read for those seeking an adult, unfiltered take on romance, laced with humor and heart. It's a story that challenges norms and provides a unique glimpse into the lives and emotions of its characters. Dive into this one-of-a-kind narrative; you won't be disappointed!
