Cats always give an impression of smugness, as though they know more than we think they know. But what if they do have special abilities that they keep to themselves? Bertrand—the Story of a Cat is about a cat who can actually understand what humans say—not just the idea but the actual words. The young girl he lives with (Andrea) learns that Bertrand can understand her and teaches him to read. After reading Puss ’n’ Boots he yearns for adventure. Andrea convinces him that adventures can be very dangerous, but even though he doesn’t seek out adventure, it seems to have a way of finding him. This is the story of a few of Bertrand’s adventures.
