Jesus, this was awful. Was a wrong volume in so many ways, the worst of the series. Well, we got Scott Lobdell name on the cover, so i should be waiting for this.

On the last book collection of Jackie Estacado's origin, we got three stories: First, someone has a reward for Jackie's head while his young cousin comes to town, then a weird city with the Darkness's power emerges and then, finally, Sonatine and Angelus are back for a final showdown.

But man, this was a 90's book all the way. We got some muscles, some terrible drawings and, as expected, women are just an object on this one. Really, we got terrible jokes as a man dropping keys on the floor and a woman bending to get it. Another exemple: In the first arc, we got Nicoletta, Jackie's cousin, who's was that little weird girl as a child, with the braces and all (THAT kind of stereotype), and now, with eighteen, she's the hottest girl on the place, and Jackie comes and says to her: "you used to be young and... ugly". Really, that's how sensitive our pretty guy Jackie is.

The three first volumes of this collection were really good, but i'm really sad that ended that way. If you're looking to follow this origin, just stick with the first three volumes. You'll be less ofended.

The Darkness: Origins, Volume 4 is a comic that knows exactly what it is: edgy, trashy, and gloriously over-the-top. The art looks great, but don't let that fool you...this book is also a weirdly hilarious, over-sexualized mess. The story kicks off with Jackie's cousin coming back into his life, and let's just say she basically wants to get dicked down by Jackie. Whoo boy, incest time? The comic plays with this idea before revealing they're not really cousins...or they are, but the whole thing is so bizarre and uncomfortable, either way let's keep going.

Then we get to the shocking reveals, like Jackie having a twin sister. Maybe? We don't know till next volume. The final showdown is a two issue long spectacle, and it's super entertaining. Angelus makes her move and pretty much "fucks up" Jackie, which is a nice change of pace. It's great to see Jackie not win so easily for once. Overall, this volume is an insane mix of the super sexual, incest thrown in, and even sexual assault. But somehow, Jackie is a changed man two years later. I dunno, this shit is weird, but it's also highly entertaining. If you don't take it serious that is. A 3 out of 5.

Probably my favourite volume from the series. The action was fast paced and the level of violence was on par with something that Garth Ennis had a hand in creating.

The only thing that I had trouble with was the story, it felt like they skipped over a page or two sometimes. Example, they might be pulling a sword from someone's back in one panel and on the next page another character is complaining about being cut with the same sword and then the building blows up. What?

Everybody is targeting Estacado for a huge bounty on his head, but it's only valid for one day. He also has to pick up the 18-year old Nicoletta, the daughter of uncle Cristo, Franchetti's hitman from way back. She always had a crush on Jackie and he's having a hard time refusing her. Get it? Hard time. I can say that because she's 18. Anyway... The gun fights are especially funny in this volume, there's plenty of hot girls, especially in a strip joint where Jackie gets some info about the hit and Jackie meets his grandmother who has a part of the Darkness within her and she wants the rest.

Jenny is trouble and Jackie sets out for Wyrmwood to save her, but the town is a myth, so he talks with Mandolin, a witch doctor. The town was created by an ancestor of Jackie's who couldn't control the power of the Darkness and it may be too much for Jackie too.

Federal agent Carla Denton interviews Cullowski, a mountain of a man permanently restrained because of his violent nature and a necrobus which means he sustains his life energy through violent sex acts. The agent offers herself to him in exchange for his killing the Darkness. Dr. Kim Fang had a forced romantic run in with Estacado when she owed money to the don and is the only one the imps think to go to when he gets shot during the day. The real problem is that someone is impersonating Jackie and is right next to the don, so Jackie needs to get there fast. It's a battle between the Darkness, Sonatine, Appolonia and the Angelus. Sonatine gets mortally wounded at one point and secretly switches minds with Wenders.

A pretty good idea of the history of the Darkness character and while I do not have the 1st 3 volumes I was able to pck up enugh to know what was happening. I know with the Darkness it is a much more adult oriented comic and the blood and killing and sexual nature of some of the panels reallys brings that home. I would say for fans of hard packed action this is a good story.
