About the author

The second of three children, Frank Cho was born in Seoul, Korea in 1971, but moved to the United States at the age of six and was raised in Beltsville, Maryland.

Cho received no formal training as an artist. He got his start writing and drawing a cartoon strip called University2 for The Diamondback, the student newspaper at the University of Maryland, College Park. After graduation, Cho adapted elements of this work for use in a professionally syndicated strip, Liberty Meadows.

Mám rád Liberty Meadows a to z mnoha důvodů. V prvé řadě to je kresba Franka Cho. Ta je excelentní ve všem, co nakreslil. Ale jak říká jeho kámoš Mike v předmluvě, tyhle Nedělní stripy kreslil Frank především kvůli sobě. A je to na nich vidět. Kolikrát jsem si říkal, kde je vlastně pointa, nebo proč tohle mělo být směšné? No, možná nemělo, Frank si prostě chtěl nakreslit, jak obří opice bojuje s dinosaury, tak to nakreslil. Pointu pak případně udělá z toho, že editor novin nechápe, kde je ten vtip.

Tim se dostávám k dalšímu důvodu, proč nám LM rád. Je to Frankův humor. Ten je slovní, vizuální, anebo situační. Vždycky je ale milý. Některé stripy opravdu nemají třeskutě vtipnou pointu a vyžadují nejspíše určité rozpoložení, jiné jsou ale velmi povedené. Vždycky jsou ale skvělé nakreslené a zábavná je i Frankova práce s panely.

Posledním důvodem, proč mám ML rád jsou postavy. Lidské i zvířecí. Kromě toho, že jsou pěkně nakreslené, tak mají i úžasné charaktery. Oblíbíte si je velice snadno. Každý z nich je skvělý sám o sobě, ale když se dají dohromady, tak mezi nimi začne fungovat chemie a je to pecka.

Tuhle knihu jsem koupil, protože jsem chtěl mít Liberty Meadows v pevné vazbě, abych měl pěknou knihu na podpis. Má nečekaně velký formát a opravdu velkoryse pojaté vnitřní uspořádání. Jinými slovy, hrozně se v ní plýtvá místem. Na druhou stranu ta kniha působí skutečně reprezentativně. Nedělní stripy jsou barevné, podání barev je perfektní a papír je příjemně pevný.

Interesting introduction

Hit with a few misses, daily strips can be demanding. Enough time has passed that for a few dollars more, the collection would worked better doing the entire series, or doing the full year, one year at a time. Still, for the most part, entertaining.

Liberty Meadows is een opvangtehuis voor dieren. Brandy is er dierenpsychiater, Frank is er dierenarts. Frank is verliefd op Brandy maar durft het haar niet te zeggen. En dan lopen er ook nog dieren rond: Ralph de dwergcircusbeer, Leslie de hypochondrische kikker, Truman de eend en zijn teckel Oscar, Dean het male chauvinistic pig, een psychotische koe met gekkekoeienziekte, Khan de reuzenmeerval.

Uh huh, ja.

Een mengeling van pin-ups (Brandy) en Rubrique à Brac (Frank Cho’s alter ego is een chimpansee die zijn lezers rechtstreeks aanspreekt en mij heel de tijd aan Professeur Burp doet denken) en Calvin & Hobbes: them’s all good eats.

Sunday strips but amazing art and good jokes. Taken from newspaper, then from the black and white comic. Frank Cho is the best.
