At first I thought this book was going to be about about a traumatized orphan and how she manages her ways and gets into a family that really cares about her, when she goes into this part time job at like a diner restaurant and the character arc is basically the people in the shop really caring about who she is

BUT NOP

WE GOT A TIN PREGNANCY BOOK PEOPLE, THEN PREGNANCY!!!

idk bruh but like her character went from lil innocent girl who had yet to know what the world is TO ALL FULL OWN SLUT, are they even the same character?? 😭😭😭 Or this is the " character " development i was greeted with.

The tale of a doormat who gradually works her way up to being a hall runner...actually, that's overstating the heroine's progress...it was really more of a tale of a doormat who was moved from the front door to an area with 10% less foot traffic.

I love Kitty Neale books. Easy to read, with some heart breaking stories of rape, murder, family discontent. But also determination and love.
Another great read.

This was a fairly easy read that I finished in a day. It was probably a 3.5 for me. It is the story of Pearl Button, a girl left at an orphanage. When she leaves the orphanage she gets a job in a cafe.

The book depicts life in a village and all the problems that go with it.

I enjoyed this book. This type of fiction is not usually my usual read but the blurb tempted me in when I picked it up at my local train station’s book swap point.

This proved to be a proper page turner for me as I found the characters varied from endearing and caustic, encouraging you to take sides from early on in the plot. The two characters most roundly drawn for me were Pearl, the protagonist, and her mother in law Dolly Dolby. For somebody who has encountered both types of personality in my time, these were believable and acutely drawn.

A stark realisation is how morals and attitudes have changed since the 1950s, where is story I set, along with the sense and sensibilities of a society emerging from the Second World War.

I will certainly read another from this excellent and down to earth author.

A nice light read. The characters were well developed and likeable and the story interesting. I did find that the story and character histories could have been better fleshed out and I felt the end just kind of dropped off like the author was tired of the story and wanted to end it. However that did leave lots of room for a sequel book and room to answer a lot of the questionable histories in the book. Overall a nice quick read.

Another of Neale's historical fiction stories set in Battersea, England. This one about a 16 year old orphan that finds a job in a café run by a battle-axe of a woman. The woman's son is handsome and seductive, and suddenly the girl is pregnant, and that revelation destroys the man that loved her, as he is rejected for the obnoxious son. The son then commits rape and assault and is sent down for 15 years, leaving the young mother to cope on her own. But the babies grandma thinks the baby is her son and sets out to kidnap him. A good read, although a bit heavy on describing the jilted man as 'not nice to look at'..... I felt that point didn't need to be stated several times! Worth a read for Kitty Neale fans.

Great book, really enjoyed it. Was a little confused over the ending as it seems a bit unfinished but overall well worth reading.
Would definitely recommend.

This book does include rape, including pedophilic which is quite traumatic to read, so just warning anyone who wants to read this book!

Lovely story

As always with Kitty's books you get involved in the characters. Needs to be a follow-up to this story, I want to know if Pearl marries Derek

Easy reading with everything turning out well for Pearl as usual. Nonetheless an enjoyable and relaxing read at the end of the day. Proof reading could be better.

I am a fan of these types of books but have never read one that was based in the South-End. I was definitaley taken aback by the tone of the book and, quite a number of times, thought that I had been transported into a gripping episode of Eastenders (but in a good way!).

The story is about Pearl Button, a girl who was abandoned at an orphanage as a baby. At 16 years old, she finally manages to enter the world and start a life of her own. Finding work at a nearby café, Pearl is thrilled to start earning money, but her naive and innocent nature is quickly used, and abused, by the café owner's son, Kevin.

We watch Pearl's growth as a young innocent girl into a grown woman, and her fight to gain a life that she could previously only dream about.

From the get go I couldn't put down this book, the beginning has a dark and forboding feel to it that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Kitty Neale's writing style is fast paced and keeps the reader interested.

I did find that this paced dropped a bit at the middle - which is when the South-End theme became a little jarring - but it picked up again and carried through to the end of the book. Once again I couldn't put the book down and actually had to walk down the road reading (an activity I wouldn't generally recommend) so that I could finish it.

The storyline was gripping and unexpected at times, especially at the end and the final few chapters brought everything together nicely. A definite thumbs up.

This book was a very quick read for me, but was still very quick. Pearl was a very relate-able girl, who grew as we read. I was gripped, and loved following her journey from girl to woman, making a life for herself. It was genuinely nail-biting at times, and at other times I just wanted to jump in the book and save her from all the bad things she didn't deserve. I really hope other books from this author are just as good

A fairly typical 'gritty reality' book set in London in the 1950s. A likeable enough heroine, but too many sordid situations for my tastes: rape, sadism, attempted murder, burglaries, bullying and more, all within the space of about a year.

Well-written on the whole, and would probably be enjoyed by those who like the Catherine Cookson style of novel.

Not my usual type of book but I really enjoyed it. I thought story moved quite slowly at the start but by half way through I couldn't put it down. My feelings about the ending are a bit mixed - I liked the direction the story was taking but it ended very abruptly.
Overall I enjoyed it enough to download the follow-up book, A Father's Revenge.

set in an age that is no longer, but modern enough to be readable, this is a heart - string - tugging story that was quite enjoyable. The story is of an orphan girl in london, and the struggles she encounters as she grows to find accomodation, work, friendship and love. easy to read language (and thankfully no swearing!!!), well written and interesting, with an actual story line. i liked it
