Read this series first back in adolescence, and as I go through the same books this present day I find how resonant some themes that the author touches upon remain. Surely at face value the series might come across as silly or over the top; but it is in fact deeply rooted in everyday themes, troubles, vulnerabilities, passions among other threads. A real depiction of human connection as a manga can get.

Onizuka strikes back! In this volume, Ms. Damon and The Little Angels finally get what's coming to them in this insightful, nonstop page turner. I was upset to find that volumes 22-25 are actually very hard to find and go anywhere from $70-90 a piece. I payed $68 myself just for this one, but for a fan of GTO it was worth it.

However, thanks to my sister I do have the rest of the series and I'm sure they will also have my positive review.

Volume 21 was better than volume 20 (towards the end), but fell short of the suspense offered in volumes 17 through 19. The new characters are not as interesting as the original cast; they seem more artificial.

It was annoying watching the stupid new girl, but somehow I loved the blushing Kikuchi and Miyu has some screen time too.

The big picture of this series' story is coming together. At first, Onizuka really just stands as a terrible example of an awful person who should never have been allowed around students, much less put in charge; so with a title like "Great Teacher" you would think he learns his lesson and becomes good. Clearly, at this point this series is more complex than that. GTO still serves as an embarrassing example of how not to teach, but he provides a contrast to the institutional status quo that just squeezes the life out of what education should truly be. Miss Fuyutsuki's revelation as to who she should be as a teacher is worth reading the whole series up to this point.
