About the author

Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu was an Irish writer of Gothic tales and mystery novels. He was the leading ghost-story writer of the nineteenth century and was central to the development of the genre in the Victorian era. M.R. James described Le Fanu as "absolutely in the first rank as a writer of ghost stories". Three of his best-known works are Uncle Silas, Carmilla and The House by the Churchyard.

Non posso assegnargli tre stelline in quanto la tentazione di abbandonarlo è stata forte fino all'insorgere del terzo racconto, anch'esso comunque promosso con debito. Ottima prova horror del quarto e discreto anche il quinto ed ultimo. Per quasi tutta la prima metà del librettino probabilmente nel tempo ricorderò soltanto la noia, nel complesso sono piuttosto delusa. Se non altro l'ho pagato meno di 5€.

The story of Sir Robert Ardagh's bond with the Devil is told in two versions. In the more popular version, passed down through village tradition, the Devil calls, summons Ardagh, and makes off with him in the manner of Maturin's Melmoth who made a contractual bargain with the Devil for magical powers for which he traded his soul. In this case Ardagh traded his soul to the Devil for wealth. The second version which is backed by a witness to the events is deemed to be the truer version. Sir Robert is given death warnings by a strange servant who is obviously the Devil in disguise, and he dies at the time predicted by this servant.

4 racconti brevi che lasciano davvero il senso del brivido e del paranormale come pochi autori sanno fare. Le Fanu è sicuramente un maestro nel raccontare le ghost stories quelle da caminetto in inverno, nella casa isolata, del non ci credo ma cosa è quel rumore!, unendo fantastico con il normale, il reale e l'irreale.

Non che Le Fanu sia una carampana, ma in questi racconti - complice la traduzione? chi lo sa - pare modernissimo, pur parlando di castelli diroccati, cavalieri obbligati al vagare eterno, maledizioni, corpi murati vivi, ecc.

Se la Hammer fosse ancora in attività dovrebbe farne dei film e invece pure lei è diventata un cadavere eccellente e leggendario.

Questa antologia di racconti comprende una serie di brevi componinimenti letterari del genere gotico incentrate sul tema del soprannaturale scritti dallo scrittore irlandese Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. I racconti sono molto brevi e variegati e lo stile di Le Fanu, così come ebbi già modo di constatare con la raccolta "Carmilla" edita Feltrinelli, è molto scorrevole e "moderno". I racconti sono:
"Il destino di Sir Robert Ardagh", la storia di un nobile colpito da un'oscura profezia di morte e che ha, tra il personale della sua dimora, un misterioso individuo dalla dubbia provenienza; (***)
"Il Pittore Schalken", è un giovane pittore innamorato la cui amata è oggetto di un misterioso "patto"; (***)
"Storie di spettri a Chapelizod" che a sua volta si divide in tre brevissime storie ambientate in una cittadina irlandese tra le quali ho preferito "L'Attaccabrighe del villaggio", la vicenda di un fantasma che castiga un assassino impunito; (****)
"Storie di fantasmi di Tiled House" la più classica tra le ghost story, le vicende di una casa infestata; (***)
"Il fantasma di Madam Crowl" raccontata da una bambina assunta in una dimora in cui vive una vecchia megera che nasconde un terribile ed inquietante segreto.(****1/2)
Sebbene questi racconti non riescano a raggiungere le sensazioni di inquietudine che ho vissuto leggendo "Carmilla" e "Tè verde" rappresentano comunque delle buone alternative. Quelli che ho preferito sono senza dubbio "Il Fantasma di Madam Crowl" che mi ha lasciato sgomento, e due dei mini racconti de "Storie di spettri a Chapelizod" ovvero "L'attaccabrighe del villaggio" e "L'Avventura del Sagrestano". I primi due racconti li ho trovati inconcludenti, non riesco ad apprezzare le storie nel quale vengono lasciate cose in sospeso. Una buona lettura per gli amanti del genere.

A collection of horror short stories. They were enjoyable but not very memorable. My favourite was Schalken the Painter: I really liked the plot, and it had some good, creepy scenes.

Read for an exam, together with 'The Haunted Baronet' and 'Sir Dominick's Bargain'. Did not entirely earn a second reading except for the fact that I first read it about a month ago and didn't really remember much. Did enjoy it the second time around though.
