Fascinating look at grassroots democracy in Cuba in the latter half of the 1970s as they struggle to build a socialist society. This book was written by a team of Chilean journalists read by Marta Harnecker, and a very large portion consists of direct quotes from people they interviewed -- mostly average citizens, sometimes party members, but very rarely national leaders. The authors are obviously sympathetic to the revolution and presumably are engaging in some cherry picking in terms of who they interview and the perspectives they include. But I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, just something to perhaps keep in mind. I will definitely be recommending this book to folks going forward.
