Fearing water to the point of inventing wild stories to avoid it and getting branded a dreadful liar, Dusty is forced to confront his phobia during a family Caribbean cruise when he meets the ghost of Tahini, a Native American girl. Simultaneous.
I read this book when I was nine. It was the crucial one that singlehandedly made me a book lover and what inspired me to beg my mom to drive me to the library just so I could fine something else that was even remotely like it. It made me pay attention to the history that surrounded me in my little corner of southern Cali growing up. I still have my battered old copy resting on my shelf with the words, "This is the Best Book Ever!" written enthusiastically in faded blue magic marker on the back of the cover. Thanks Sherry Garland.
I read this book in grade school about 4 times. this book made me love to read, and now at age 26 i still remember the title and where i was when i read it. This book took me on an adventure that shaped my wisconsin childhood.
Sherry Garland Cabin 102 is established my opinon of this book It was a good book I have to admit, but not really my type of book It was really exciting in some parts and slow in others but it was still good.I guess I am just use to faster paced books but I really enjoyed the book. For example the Cabin 102 Directed me with its a hunting tale and its unique style. The theme of this book is that hosts of causes of deaths you have to face your fears and you have to believe and your self because your braver than you think. the author style of this book becomes fiction real and has to be dealing with different situations of terror through out the story and its gives you an ideas of visualizing the feelings of characters and its problems as well and it gives you a feeling of the place its taken place in the story and also The book is very descriptive of what the author is telling you. The author voice seems to me very claim gives you a senses of different personalities I'm not really sure if its usually from any other books I've have read I cant really describe any from what I've have read. The characters in story is dusty the main character, there is a girl named Tahni, and Lionel, dusty is a boy who is afraid of water because when he was younger he drowned and that why he is afraid, Tahni is a ghost girl who is in cabin 102 there is where she died,Lionel is the coordinator of the ship also their is bobby who is a friend of dusty. The author makes me feel like I understand the characters and who they are and what their most afraid of because everyone has their own fears in a way the book entertained me and having a feeling to read it more. Things the characters said
My great aunt gave this to me for Christmas when I was really young, and back then I was unsure if I was ready for reading a picture-less book at the age of 7 or 8. I believe this is the first novel I've ever read. I loved it so much, it was like a best friend to me! Haha. At 20 years old now, you can pretty much guess who happy I am about finding (or remembering) the title of this novel. This is THE novel that got me interested in reading more "grown up books without pictures" and into Nancy Drew adventures. To this day I still remember the story and how much I enjoyed reading it as a kid. It made me less afraid of the idea of ghosts and the supernatural, hehe. I wish I could find my original copy.
Cute! I loved the relationship between Dusty and Tahni. Dusty was relateable, and the descriptions of the setting really brought the story to life. Plus, I learnt a lot about the Taino people and their history, something you don't hear about at school.
this is a wonderful learning experience from ghosts to a dread of water it has a dusty smell and a livly wave the saltly taste and the adventurous texture i luv it!!!
Read this in one sitting. Garland certainly did some research as she went into writing this book. The characters are sensitively drawn. Difficult topics are handled with language that allows readers to engage with them at the level of what they understand and know, while not sparring the truth of the history and realities of what youths have and still do experience.
The story drew me in. The ending was satisfying, if bittersweet. But how could be anything else, given the history.
Ahhh back to the days when books were color categorized by difficulty and reading a “chapter book” was something to brag about. If I remember correctly, this book was an orange reading level...maybe a yellow, but none the less, the first book I ever proclaimed as my favorite.
This was one of my first favorite books ever. I remember reading it in elementary school and it’s stuck with me since. I just re-read it and had a great time. As a child, it’s easily a 5-star read.
