In the sequel to City of Whispers, Ailis, Scott, and James travel to London to search for Ailis's sister, Nina, and Richard Ashdown's son, Tommy. Ailis hopes for a quick rescue, but nothing goes as planned. As she becomes increasingly frustrated, Ailis is haunted by memories from her past, and a growing feeling that there may be more to the vampire outbreak than she first believed.
This is second in the City of Whispers series, which I bought immediately after finishing the first. Now we're in London, and we learn some of the background about the vampires, which I had been looking for in the first one. This seemed even shorter than the first one, a super fast read, with maybe less character development. It's too bad that #3 isn't around yet for me to see what happens next... A lot of what i supposed turned out to be true in this volume.
A fitting sequel to a great book. The Old City came with a lot of expectations, given how great The City of Whispers was, and it lived up to all of them. The story picks up right where it left off and moves quickly. In The Old City, you get to see a new side of Ailis as concern for her sister pushes her to do things that the otherwise cool headed protagonist would not have considered. Katherine Sorin has really created a wonderful character and focused not only on her strengths, but also on her flaws. The bond between the characters strains and grows stronger with each new experience and that too is depicted in a simple and engaging manner. The action may not be as much as in the first book, but as with its prequel, it is so well done that your imagination needs little push to see it all happening around you. What I especially liked about The Old City was the parallel story style, where the present is sprinkled with scenes of the past of Ailis' life. Although they seem random, they all take you to a conclusion where past and present combine to give you an unexpected realization. And to make it all the more interesting, there are scenes that may strike you as random in the present too, but they only add substance to a beautifully woven conclusion. The conclusion itself was unexpected and captivating and now, I can hardly wait to get my hands on the next book. All in all, an extremely engaging read that, much like its first part, was almost impossible to put down.
The City of Whispers was one of my favorite books. I have recommended it to everyone I know, even my 11 year old son. This book however, suffers from the middle book syndrome (to make it a trilogy, there is a lot of filler - too wordy - when the story could probably be told in 2 books). It is a good book, but on my kindle, I was 72% before I thought the action finally started. From then on, I really enjoyed it. And this book goes into more detail on what is going on/what caused this epidemic/and tries to answer the whys, but not in too much detail - just a few chapters thankfully. The price is right and the books are good - I highly recommend!
Disappointing sequel. I had trouble keeping my interest in it, unlike the first one. Ailis becomes a very different character....and I'm not sure I like her. Questions from the first are answered, but the ending is extremely abrupt. I assume there will be a 3rd book. Not sure if I'll read it or not.
I loved this book as much as I loved the first one. I had amazon inform me the second this book was out and read it the first night and stayed up all night to finish it. I love this writer and now have to hope she writes a third book or at least more books.
even better than the first book.I really liked this series and it was a fast read. There were a few times at night I couldn't stop reading and would stay up later than I planned. I dont want to spoil anything so Ill jsut say worht reading and if you read book one you have ot read book 2!
it was as good as the first book, but it should have just been one book instead of breaking the story into two separate books. They definitely need to be read one after the other.
Well, okay, the vampire apocalypse didn't happen only in New York City. An extension of the story and characters from City of Whispers, but not as well done as that first book.
