Born on the peaceful and tranquil world of Czarnia, the ultraviolent interstellar bounty hunter Lobo decided one day to kill everyone on the planet so that he would be unique. But years after his massacre of over five billion people, the lunatic assassin learns that one other person from Czarnia still exists, his fourth grade teacher Miss Tribb. Infuriated by the news but bound to duty, Lobo finds himself protecting his teacher from a slew of attackers as part of his latest mission. But in the end, the alien's bloodlust wins out and Lobo truly does become the last of his species when he breaks the neck of his former instructor.
Keith Ian Giffen was an American comic book illustrator and writer. He is possibly best-known for his long runs illustrating, and later writing the Legion of Super-Heroes title in the 1980s and 1990s. He also created the alien mercenary character Lobo (with Roger Slifer), and the irreverent "want-to-be" hero, Ambush Bug. Giffen is known for having an unorthodox writing style, often using characters in ways not seen before. His dialogue is usually characterized by a biting wit that is seen as much less zany than dialogue provided by longtime collaborators DeMatteis and Robert Loren Fleming. That approach has brought him both criticism and admiration, as perhaps best illustrated by the mixed (although commercially successful) response to his work in DC Comics' Justice League International (1987-1992). He also plotted and was breakdown artist for an Aquaman limited series and one-shot special in 1989 with writer Robert Loren Fleming and artist Curt Swan for DC Comics.
Giffen's first published work was "The Sword and The Star", a black-and-white series featured in Marvel Preview, with writer Bill Mantlo. He has worked on titles (owned by several different companies) including Woodgod, All Star Comics, Doctor Fate, Drax the Destroyer, Heckler, Nick Fury's Howling Commandos, Reign of the Zodiac, Suicide Squad, Trencher (to be re-released in a collected edition by Boom! Studios)., T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, and Vext. He was also responsible for the English adaptation of the Battle Royale and Ikki Tousen manga, as well as creating "I Luv Halloween" for Tokyopop. He also worked for Dark Horse from 1994-95 on their Comics Greatest World/Dark Horse Heroes line, as the writer of two short lived series, Division 13 and co-author, with Lovern Kindzierski, of Agents of Law. For Valiant Comics, Giffen wrote XO-Manowar, Magnus, Robot Fighter, Punx and the final issue of Solar, Man of the Atom.
He took a break from the comic industry for several years, working on storyboards for television and film, including shows such as The Real Ghostbusters and Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy.
He is also the lead writer for Marvel Comics's Annihilation event, having written the one-shot prologue, the lead-in stories in Thanos and Drax, the Silver Surfer as well as the main six issues mini-series. He also wrote the Star-Lord mini-series for the follow-up story Annihilation: Conquest. He currently writes Doom Patrol for DC, and is also completing an abandoned Grant Morrison plot in The Authority: the Lost Year for Wildstorm.
2.5 stars. Lobo is a great comic character and I remember really liking this when I was younger. Upon re-reading it recently it has lost a little of the edge it had when I was younger, but was still a fun read.
Miss Tribb: "You're and EVIL, SADISTIC, BLOODTHIRSTY, CERTIFIABLY INSANE MONSTER!" Lobo: "Thanks."
The Main Man (AKA Assassin to Royalty An' Scourge of the Cosmos, Gentle and loving master of a pack of space-dolphins) has a lot of fun in this one. Been a while since I read a Lobo comic. Oh, it's fraggin' fun!
Read this if you want to get a glimpse in his crazy (euphemism!) world. It has the relevant insights into his character and his favorite radio channel. Yo Bro, do it for the 'Bo!
This is a collection of the first four-issue run featuring the character of Lobo, a DC comics character that is half Wolverine and half Han Solo, with an appetite for carnage and violence on a level achieved by few other characters.
I'll be up front: this is vile, disgusting, and dark in every possible way. It is also hilarious, outrageous, and totally everything the hype made it out to be. In the mid-'90s, Lobo became something of a phenomena, starting out as a minor mercenary character in the Omega Men book, to commanding his own monthly title and appearing simultaneously in several other books, too. (Not to mention winding up in many one-offs and mini-series.)
As a property that DC can cash in on, however, he has nearly completely lost his value. The character's books have been canceled and/or changed in huge, fundamental ways, and the hyper-violence and humor of Keith Giffen was taken over and Disney-fied by his milquetoast protégé, Alan Grant. While the entire Lobo phenomena came and went pretty quickly, there were landmark moments that really gave DC a chance to be edgy in a way that they had never been before or since. As a relic from the comics speculation market of the mid-'90's, he is truly a strange icon that is still as weird and wonderful as he was back then.
Lobo is : The Main Man, The 'Bo, Master Frag, Scourge o' the Cosmos, The Last Czarnian ...
It is believed that Lobo is the only remaining Czarnian, but the true is that one Czarnian survived his genocide and it is .... MISS TRIBB! Lobo's fourth grade teacher !
Miss Tribb - It sounds like dreadful dream since Lobo has to bring her to Vril Dox (alive!!!) and Lobo always takes his promises very seriously (because of his reputation).
But don't forget ... Lobo is Lobo ... Do you really think that woman with special ability of irritate anyone can survive more than one hour with Lobo?
Lobo: *sigh* "A friggin' colostomy woulda been more fun than this."
But don't be worry - In the end of the story Lobo fixes thing ;) Lobo: "Delivered alive and into your custody - that was the deal - didn't say nothin' 'bout after you had custody! Have a nice day.. haw haw haw!"
What's more, the story (or to be honest Miss Tribb's book) tells us more about the fate of Czarnia, Lobo and his school years...). I really love parts from Unauthorized Biography of Lobo.
And what do I think about whole story? I can't help myself but I expect something more ... It was good, I really love idea of the story but I feel little bit bored during reading (during reading Lobo?! Gosh!?! I can't believe that something like this has happened ...). For me, it's maybe one of the weakest Lobo story.
Lobo is seething because the recently released "Unauthorized Biography of Lobo" that paints a rather unflattering portrait of the psychopathic bounty hunter. But before Lobo can go hunt for the biographer, he's called in by L.E.G.I.O.N. boss Vril Dox II to escort a prisoner across the star ways. Reluctantly agreeing to the job, Lobo arrives at the detention facility on Oneida VI, and learns that the prisoner he's meant to escort is none other than his fourth grade teacher, Miss E. Tribb. Fuming since Lobo has long believed he was the last of the Czarnians after he committed mass genocide on the planet, he's further aggrieved to learn that Miss Tribb is the writer of the biography. Despite his murderous inclinations, Lobo is honor bound to escort Miss Tribb to the L.E.G.I.O.N. headquarters and thus has to undergo an arduous journey where he must carve through several factions out to kill either Tribb or Lobo, including the Legion of Decency, an intergalactic police unit and a group of space truckers. It's a chaotic road trip story set in space, all whilst Lobo and Tribb squabble their way through it.
Keith Giffen's script is hilarious from start to finish, but its Simon Bisley's artwork that really elevates this miniseries. Bisley, not typically known for drawing comedic stuff, does a fantastic job complementing Giffen's chaotic storytelling and adds some great visual gags throughout. Perhaps it's Giffen's breakdowns at work here, but Bisley's essence is felt throughout with the use of jagged lines and outlandish figures. The designs are immaculate and the action frenetic, making this a rip-roaring great time.
What a fun tale. Lobo is a character I've heard so much about, mainly encountering him through supporting roles in comics and animated shows, and this is the first solo-book I've read of the main man. What's here is an entertaining look at this bounty hunter who loves destruction and mayhem while sticking to his word at all times, meeting his most infuriating job as he transports a prisoner alive who happens to be his fourth-grade teacher. It's fun to see him get infuriated and blood-thirsty while encountering the ballet and a spelling bee, yet being oblivious to wider plans in motion set to cause his downfall. All while set to a stunning art style, this is a tremendous read.
¡Larga vida a 'El Hombre'!
It's okay, nothing special. I was expecting a bit more, but it's just not nearly as transgressive as it thinks it is. Mostly I just didn't find it very funny. Fantastic art though.
