This book was a fascinating read into the life of Herman Mudgett, aka H.H. Holmes, dubbed "America's first serial killer".
The book was written beautifully, but the story itself was like the car crash that I didn't want to look at but couldn't tear my eyes away from. I couldn't put it down through most of the book. Towards the end of the story, after realizing how much of it was historically accurate, I found it hard to finish. At that point, I began to feel bad about deriving any enjoyment out of someone else's pain, but out of respect for the victims, I chose to finish the book in order to get closure on the story. I do recommend it as an educational, historical work, with a definite documentary-type enjoyment.
