A fact-filled treasure trove of information about the sea's creatures, from fish to whales to dolphins to starfish!
Come along as Captain Barnacle recounts his adventures on the high seas! Facts about fish and other sea creatures line the walls of the aquarium as Barnacle leads a school tour. The imaginative exploits of the captain and his search for buried treasure are complemented by the fun and informative fish facts. (The book was vetted by a number of aquarium specialists as well as marine biologists.)
Ed Miller's humorous text and lively illustrations are sure to keep children entertained. With the surge in popularity of fish and aquariums due to films like Finding Nemo and Shark Tale, this title will spark interest in fish-fascinated kids everywhere.
Edward Miller is the author of many nonfiction children's titles. A prolific graphic designer and longtime art director in children's publishing, Miller lives in New York City.
It's really good if your child likes sea creatures and wants to learn more about them. It's more of a "fun fact" book, random at that. The facts don't always go along with what is happening in the story, but all are about sea creatures.
3.5 stars So, my 3.5yo son was so drawn to this book. It probably is best more for 4-6yo, but he did pretty well sitting through it. The whole pirate theme aquarium guide was honestly inspired for getting little kids interested in a nonfiction book. Honestly, I was not a fan of the illustrating.
A good read for children showing interest in sea creatures. It gives brief facts about a (mostly) normal variety of things you would find in the sea. And what child wouldn't enjoy following a pirate's adventures, complete with pirate-speak?
Any chance to read something using my awful invitation pirate voice is a win. So fun. Plus, the pirate story is interspersed with facts about aquatic life. My boys were telling random people today why dolphins are mammals, not fish. Well done, cheesy pirate book! Arrghh!
