I bought this for $2.99, hoping it would entertain girls who'd otherwise be intimidated by books about math. Having twice elicited squeals of "omfg penguins!", it's more than paid for itself.

Tučňáka do každé rodiny. :-)

Samice ví, co všechno led a trhliny v ledu dokážou, a proto jí vejce nesmí upadnout.

s. 54 Samice musí – podle velmi přísných pravidel – předat své křehké břemeno samci. (...)

A nakonec 102 dní = 4 měsíce.
Aha.

s. 106, 107 Dospělý pozorně sleduje, zda nejde o podvod: nepadá v úvahu, že by nakrmil jiné mládě než své vlastní!
s. 116 Dospělí chtějí za každou cenu krmit mládě, i když nemají své vlastní. To je překvapivý instinkt.

The life cycle of the emperor penguin is amazing, they are incredibly adapted to life in the harshest environment on Earth, that of Antarctica, where the average temperature is 40 below zero Fahrenheit in the summer. Their breeding and hatching grounds are miles away from the sea, which is the source of their food. After the mother lays the egg, the father incubates it while the mother makes the journey back to the sea in the perpetual darkness of the Antarctic winter.
When the egg is hatched, the father regurgitates some special food for the chick, even though he has not eaten in months. The mother then returns to care for the chick so that the father can go to the sea to eat and recharge. This continues until the chicks are strong enough to make the journey to the sea, where they will stay until they are mature enough to reproduce and continue the cycle of life.
This is a great book that is extremely educational. The text is written at a level that early elementary children can read and understand and the images are of high quality. I strongly recommend this as a basic science book for children.

Summary: This book gives a detailed account of how penguins live in Antarctica. The penguins travel miles and miles from see to get back to the place where it, its parents, and its grandparents were born to huddle together in the winter. During the middle of winter the female penguins lay eggs and give it to the father to watch while it go back to sea for food. When the baby penguins grow, they go away for four years to sea to live and return during the fifth year.

Review:
I thought this is an awesome story about the march of the penguins. It was very telling. I would read this to my students.

Uses:
This book could be used as part of a themed lesson on either winter or animals
Another use for this would be for a fun read for children.

This book is about penguins that live in the harsh conditions of Antarctica. To my surprise, this National Geographic book did not have many words and facts but it did contain a lot of images. I would use this book in my classroom during an animal/winter unit because it has realistic images and the read is not too overwhelming for students.

We seem to like to read a lot of books about penguins and somewhere along the way, one of the reviewers highly recommended this book. "Oh, dear," I thought to myself. I had tried to take our girls to this movie when they were much too young. Morgan Freeman's deep and soothing voice combined with jaw-dropping visuals of Antarctica and a year in the life of this majestic creature? How could I go wrong? Well, our girls were just too young for this movie and were bored, bored, bored within the first thirty minutes. We stuck it out for less than three seasons before we chose to leave the theater (probably one season too long, actually.) So I was a bit irrationally anxious to read this book with them, thinking that perhaps the ennui would set in again.

But I must admit that I'm very impressed. The quantity and quality of the narrative is perfect, giving enough detail without overwhelming. And the photographs are almost as amazingly beautiful as the celluloid. I love that there are many two-page spreads of photographs without any narrative at all, and it makes this rather large book not so very intimidating. Still, we took it in slowly, reading a chapter or two at a time and just enjoying looking at the pictures. We really enjoyed reading this story together and I wonder if perhaps our girls are old enough to enjoy watching the movie now.

I was tagging books today and found this one on the shelf. It's the companion book to the documentary. It is so cute, taking you along the journey that penguins go through to have babies. Great photos, great writing!

I absolutely loved this book! The pictures are marvelous, facts are amazing, and information is good for young learners to know. This work is great for a read-aloud for young students and one that is good for independent reading for students at a second or third grade reading level or higher.

Beautiful photographs and filled with interesting facts about penguins. Too advanced for early readers, but might be beneficial to the third graders when doing continent study projects.
