A basic exploration of the appearance, behavior, and habitat of moose, Earth's largest deer. Also included is a story from folklore explaining how moose interact with other animals.
This book introduces the animal moose, a sub-species of deer.
This book, illustrated with full color photographs, gives a basic introduction to moose. It describes their physical characteristics, what they eat, where they live, their predators, their life cycle, and their relationship with humans.
Sidebars with defined vocabulary words as well as additional facts appear throughout the book above and below the text. An index and a bibliography are included at the back of the book.
The book states that there are six different kinds of moose, which are named for the habitats in which they live, but then it only named the Yukon-Alaska moose, which was annoying. It should have named all six of them. Scientists don’t agree on moose classifications, and moose populations can be divided into eight or more sub-species although the four sub-species in North American are pretty standard: Alaskan moose, Shiras moose, Western Canadian moose, and Eastern Canadian moose. Other subspecies are: European moose / elk, Mid- / West Siberian moose, East Siberian moose, Manchurian moose, and Caucasian moose (extinct), which are often condensed into two groups: European elk and Siberian moose.
It's an easy read, students can practice vocabulary. Students can choose to study a different animal each week. This type of book has great pictures and not too little or too much information.
My friend is moose obsessed...which has made ME moose obsessed. Last year (2012) I saw over 5 moosen (as we call them..thanks Brian Reagan--comedian ) This is a great book, and I could just look at the pictures. The information is great, but on a literature point of view not amazing...from a non fiction point of view, excellent. A student could come in and do a report straight from this book. But I will just sit and look at the pictures...thanks!
