Jodie and the Library card

Rate this book
Jodie Broom, a 12-year-old girl (almost 13!), is like most girls her age. She loves her friends, music, and is always up for a good adventure. What she treasures above all else are books and she is consumed by them, reading and collecting whatever she can to satisfy her voracious appetite for stories, facts, and history. But Jodie lives in the year 2075, and more than fifty years have passed since the banning of books and paper; it's a time when no one can own a printed book, or even print photographs. In this E-world, experiences are largely simulated, from the reconstituted food to the zoo that only shows films of all the extinct species. With her student library card, which gives her the ability to time travel, Jodie discovers that she and her friends can experience historical events and meet legendary characters, and can also find and bring home her precious books to keep safe in her secret hiding place. But her luck may soon run out as the authorities wise up to the youths' craftiness.

Julie Hodgson has succeeded in creating an educational and fun adventure that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Her experiences living in many places around the world have helped inspire her writing and allow readers to enjoy the thrill of traveling.

Twelve-year old Jodie is a bookworm- but in her time, owning a book can put your life at risk. The year is 2075, and the world has been dominated by computers (Apple has even produced an iPad50!) and library cards. Jodie can travel to any period in time with her card, so when she argues with her parents, she escapes from her world for a while. With her friends Pacman and Kai, she embarks on a quest to retrieve an ancient book for Kai's uncle. The journey becomes more complicated along the way, and the friends face library card malfunctions. The threesome find themselves in ancient China with the Huns, at the Sydney Harbour Bridge during New Year's, aboard the R.M.S Titanic, and lots more. The story is full of fascinating history facts and information, all while conveying the important message of appreciating what you have.

This was a great book! Middle graders are bound to love it, especially those who are fans of Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Treehouse series.

‘Jodie and the Library Card’ had such an interesting premise that I had to pick up the book. I’ve always been a fan of futuristic Sci-Fi novels, but the historical journey that Jodie and her friends get to take really adds to the fun form me. Despite being just one children’s book, the kids get to meet Atilla the Hun, sail the Titanic, and travel across the world, among other adventures. It’s a great way to teach children a little bit about history but also providing the entertainment value of time travel. I highly recommend this story for pre-teen readers.

As this is no longer available and will be Published by Opera OMnia Publishing house according to the website, I shall wait for the updated and unabridged version. This author reminds me of enid Blyton with her simple and curious story telling. Many authors tend to use slang and updated English. I love this author for the opposite reason. Well done.

I read the original version of Jodie and the library card back in 2011 when the paperback came out. I really enjoyed the story of the world without books and a library card that didn't access books but too Jodie and her friends Kai and Pacman on time travelling journeys.

The author shows great emotion and care for the characters in the book, and I fell in love with mooshka the troll found in vastmanland Sweden. Her trips on the titanic, meeting Attila the Hun, only brought fun to historical facts that would have otherwise been forgotten.

I could not think of sitting in a library where there would be no books and just E-things to keep us occupied..and the thought of having the terrible Ms Noble would scar me for life!

This would be an amazing movie animated or film..I could just see Pacman getting stuck in the game he played or Jodie fighting for her library card while the titanic sinks!

I have not read such a fun book in ages and highly recommend this to anyone who adores books and a spot of time travelling. I do hope there are more coming!

Jodie is a time traveler from the year 2075, who has the perfect opportunity to visit any era she wishes. Her love of books caused her to be adventurous and discover many time periods.
When her parents discover a stash of books she's been hiding in her room, she must discard them somewhere in the past as books had been banished since 2020.
This book allows you to take a futuristic look at advanced technology as well as a glimpse into the past. "There was no need to grow things in 2075 because technology had advanced so far that anything normally produced for eating, or even breathing, could be made by men or women in a lab."
As the book progresses Jodie is joined by Pacman and Kai in quest for an ancient Chinese book. There is trouble along the way, the kids get stuck in a time zone. What happens, what they do, and how they work things out can be learned by reading the book.
You will enjoy the adventures and picturesque descriptions in the telling of this cutting-edge tale.

This book had me smiling the whole way through, except for the parts where I was on the edge of my seat! This book is a time travel fantasy where our protagonist, Jodie, lives in the year 2075 (where all paper books are outlawed and everything is digital), and all kids are given library cards that can time travel. They are meant to be used so kids can see historical moments and learn. A great setup for a story. Jodie, her friends Kai and Pacman, decide to time-hop together after Jodie is found out to have been hording real books from the future. I loved the historical accuracy of each time they went too, and actually learned a lot! But as things go sometimes, things get out of hand when they decide to check out the Titanic. The story picks up from there with fantastical encounters, both historical and mythical, that kept me turning those pages. I really liked this book, and think it's an awesome middle-grade read. five big stars!

Highly recommended! This is that same review as I did on the other book which is identical... But wanted to congratulate the author on such a successful book and winning an award!

An inventive and adventurous book. set in 2075, Jodie sets out to collect books, which are banned in her time, in fact all books are. With her pals, Pacman and Kai she time-hops through history bringing it alive and into our minds. A great read.

A lovely tribute to books featuring some fun adventures ! A quick stop tour through a selection of historic events from last century. Maybe a bit too tragic at the end ?? Would love if my library card allowed me to time travel, but the rest of the dystopian future seems less than ideal

The premise of the story is great (which gives it a higher rating), but the execution, not so much. The brief glimpses into historical events don't provide the greatest level of detail, and it also seems that those details that are included are twisted to fit a personal view.

I was hoping to hand this to my daughter when I was finished, but it's not going to happen.

This was a wonderful time traveling read.. Love the fact that the author immersed us in history, whether we wanted to or not! I'll leave no spoilers but a good teen read. As an adult I enjoyed it equally as much.

Jodie and the Library Card is a time-travelling adventure novel aimed at children 9-12 years old.

12 year old Jodie Broom (she is almost 13) lives in the year 2075 when everything has gone digital. Printed media has been banned since 2025 and there are no longer any books or libraries as we know them. Everybody has an eReader, but Jodie is a bookworm who loves real books (I have a Kindle and while I love it I do prefer reading a real paper book).

School issue each child with a library card that enables then to time travel; this is supposed to aid them with their homework but Jodie uses it to explore and collect books. Owing books in 2075 is illegal and can have very serious consequences so when Jodie’s parents find her collection they are not pleased and order her to get rid of them. This sees Jodie get upset and embark on a time travelling adventure starting in China and having to collect a book from Attila the Hun. She also travels to the Titanic, WWII London, the Carnation Revolution in Portugal and more but gets trapped in time with her friends. Will they be able to find their way home?

Overall, Jodie and the Library Card is a great adventure story for children. It teaches about history (in a brief, non-stuffy way) and shows one possible outcome of libraries not being used today and the over-reliance of using eReaders and not real books.

Julie Hodgson was written a great sci-fi adventure story in a very easy to read style. A fun and entertaining story that children, teens and adults will enjoy.

The protagonist and the lovely subject of the fantasy “Jodie and The Library Card”, made me remember my teenage years, when I wanted to travel in time in order to meet inspiring characters
and to experience all the amazing things and places from the books which I was reading at that time, a fact which got me involved in Julie Hodgson’s story right from the first pages.
Besides the delightful subject of the book framed by an engaging time travel between future and past,

I appreciated as well the educational character with subtle and inspiring life lessons transposed by the author in it, which are capable of leaving the readers with meaningful deals to think of.

I found Julie Hodgson’s book well-written and I think that it shouldn’t be missed by the fantasy genre fans!
