Four of Barron's recently-published titles that quickly became hits among younger readers are now available as a four-volume boxed set. Airy Fairy is the clumsiest, messiest, and funniest young fairy at the Academy for Good Fairies. To make matters worse, her life is further complicated by a sneaky fellow student, Scary Fairy, who constantly tries to get her in trouble. Airy Fairy's hilarious boarding-school misadventures are enhanced with comical line illustrations that perfectly capture every story's zany atmosphere. Each book is divided into chapters, just like an adult's novel. The four titles that make up this entertaining set Magic Mess!, Magic Mischief!, Magic Mix Up!, and Magic Muddle!
Margaret Ryan is a former teacher who has written over eighty books for children between the ages of five and eleven. She loves to enthuse children about books and won a Scottish Arts Council Award for her book, The Queen's Birthday Hat. She always includes the children in her audience by dressing them up as the characters in her story. She believes that author visits should be fun. She has had children's stories on T.V. and radio, and has also been commissioned to write books for schools, children's poetry, and a series of books for reluctant readers. Her books are translated into many different languages.
Having just read a book in the Rainbow Magic series, this was a welcome step-up. Silly plots + a likeable and relateable main character + a touch of fairy magic is a recipe for capturing the interest (and hearts) of little girls everywhere. I'll recommend this series to students.
