Austria, 1938. Anne watches in horror as Hitler’s tanks roll through the streets of Vienna, amid crowds of cheering supporters. Her embittered ex-husband, now a fervent member of the Nazi cause, is among the cavalcade — he is burning with hatred for Anne, seeing her as a symbol of the old Austrian empire he once served. Then a chance encounter with a British journalist leaves Anne with a secret that must be smuggled out of the country, and Anne knows that she must forsake her beloved Vienna and flee with her children to Britain.
In a thrilling journey that will separate sisters and brothers, parents and children, Anne and her family escape to freedom, to dream of a reunion in far-away London.

DNF. I have read the first 50 pages of this novel but decided to give it up. It caught my eye because I usually like historical novels and I like reading about WWII and this story starts in Austria, in 1938.
However, after the first few pages I became discouraged with the writing. Everything is a bit too obvious and the characters are too black and white - either very strong and handsome and brave, or cold, bad and despicable – I may be exaggerating a bit, but it is not too far from this.
It might become a good story, but I just don’t feel like going on.
A fast paced and thrilling story! Like James Bond traveling in a pack! I wish there was at least one prequel to tell the story about how the British spies and the Italian/Austrian couple met during WWI.
First time I've read this and have enjoyed it. This is about characters you may have come across in the Adams family later books, as friends of Col Bill Lucas. Eloise's husband. Son in law to Boots. Anyway thoroughly enjoyed it.
