Frances Pauli writes books about animals, hybrids, aliens, shifters, and occasionally ordinary humans. She tends to cross genre boundaries, but hovers around fantasy and science fiction with romantic tendencies.
Her work has won four Leo awards, two Coyotl awards, and has been nominated for an Ursa Major award.
She lives in Washington State with her family, a small menagerie, and far too many houseplants.
People are disappearing, strange thing is that many of them look very similar. Stevie witnesses a customer vanishing near the pet shop. Chloe and Ian unwittingly transport Stevie to the Shift Hotel, where Stevie tries to find the customer, well he vanished like Chloe and Ian did.
Stevie is working at a pet store and really has a crush on Mark. He’s a gorgeous hunk of man and she can barely keep from drooling. So when she sees someone fighting with him in the back alley, she’s got to save him, right?
Ms. Pauli has written a many layered fantasy story here. It’s sprinkled with humor, has a side of danger, and two of the main characters face a relationship crisis. She has created interdimensional worlds with “aspects”. That’s the same person on one world being represented on other worlds. They have different names, lead different lives, and may not even be human but they exist on each world.
Stevie is a quirky independent character who is not willing to take “no” for an answer. She works at a pet shop and enjoys her life. When she finds herself hijacked to another dimension by mistake, she wants to find Mark who vanished in front of her eyes. I really enjoyed the banter between her and the other main female character, Chloe. Chloe wants her to sign a "hold harmless" agreement with a silence clause and go home, but Stevie isn’t willing.
With humans having too much interest in Chloe and her non-earth friends, there is plenty of occasion for humor and good fun. The story is enjoyable, the characters are interesting and strong in personalities, and you learn how that world works through Stevie’s eyes.
The author does a very good job of fleshing her world out and getting you interested in her characters. The story moves right along and each page adds another puzzle for the characters to resolve.
If you like fantasy and using your imagination, you’ll love this story. And the best news? I’m pretty sure Stevie will be back again in another book in this series. I hope to read more about this character and this world. Why not “taste” it for yourself?
I'm sorry to write that I didn't like the sequel nearly as much as the orginal, Dimensional Shift.
Aspect Ratio's plot was confusing. I was expecting more of Chloe's adventures. Instead, the story focused too much on a new character and a parallel plot. Maybe this would have worked for a third or fouth novel, but not the first sequel.
