Timothy Paul Jones is an American evangelical scholar known for his work in apologetics and family ministry. He serves as the C. Edwin Gheens Professor of Christian Family Ministry at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Jones has authored influential texts defending the historical reliability of the New Testament and has promoted a model of “family-equipping ministry,” which balances family discipleship with age-specific church programs. His apologetics have evolved from evidential to presuppositional approaches, emphasizing the role of the church’s moral witness and care for the marginalized. He has been recognized for books such as Misquoting Truth, How We Got the Bible, and In Church as It Is in Heaven, the latter promoting multiethnic church communities. Jones is a member of the Evangelical Theological Society and has been praised as a leading voice in engaging both secular critics and intra-faith debates. He and his wife Rayann have four adopted children.

Most people think history is boring. Most people think church is boring. Put together history and church and you've got "boring multiplied by boring." At least that's the way a lot of people think.

People with that mentality need to read Christian History Made Easy by Timothy Paul Jones. Jones starts with the premise that "the church's history is our family history." Learning about how doctrine was articulated, who the heroes of yesteryear were, and what errors have derailed the church in the past is just a fascinating study of our own ecclesiological family tree.

As a pastor, I've often yearned to teach my people about church history. I once heard someone say, "The devil doesn't have any new lies. He just recycles the same old ones every few generations." Those well-apprised of church history know that is true. I have often thought, "If only my people would understand what ideas have been deemed heretical, maybe they would be better equipped to deal with the heresies that seem to pop up so frequently." But alas - I have never taught church history in my church. After all, that subject is something that seminarians snooze through.

Timothy Paul Jones took the brave step as a pastor and wrote a curriculum to teach his people the high (and low) points of church history. The result was Christian History Made Easy and its companion video lessons and workbooks. While I haven't yet explored the videos or the curriculum (I will!), I can only sing praises about the book. Jones does a masterful job of giving a 30,000 foot view of church history. He hits the major players and themes that have helped shape what the church is. He provides frequent on-line links to those that want to dig deeper into more information about important people, events, or writings from antiquity. He even provides phonetical pronunciations of the more difficult names. Jones writes with clarity, brevity, and a laugh-out-loud sense of humor! Seriously, I found myself chuckling out loud at times! The end result is a history book that is a page-turner. Jones makes church history accessible even to the uninitiated among us.

I would highly recommend this book to novices and laity wanting to learn more about the history of Christianity. This work is far from comprehensive; it doesn't claim to be. It isn't on the level of Justo Gonzalez or Philip Schaff. I don't think Jones would be insulted by that; he had a different audience in mind. In fact, it has the potential to appeal to a much broader audience than other historical works in the field. We need introductory level writings that can entice people into deeper study. Christian History Made Easy is just such a work! I highly recommend this to pastors, small group leaders, and anyone who is even remotely interested to learn more about the development of Christian thought throughout history.

Excellent, clearly written book on the history of the church. A great reference for anyone who loves history and the church! I will definitely reread again. Jones adds a touch of humor to his writing which makes the book even more engaging. Many interactive websites are referred to throughout the book so that the reader can peruse more deeply areas of special interest.
