When the United States entered The Great War in 1917, along with the mobilization of the military, charitable organizations activated their programs to support the troops. One of these organizations was the Young Men's Christian Association. J. Gresham Machen left the comfort of his teaching position at Princeton Theological Seminary to work with the Y.M.C.A. This book provides transcriptions of his complete correspondence with his family during his service in 1918 and 1919 annotated with footnotes, maps, and a glossary of people and subjects.
Not what I was expecting, because Machen was not a soldier but a YMCA worker, but nonetheless a great read. I never knew the great theologian had spent so much time with chocolate. The letters seem almost coated with the gallons of the stuff he served to the soldiers in France. Even better is the sweetness of his love for his mother - the recipient of most of the letters. This would be a great book for boys to read because the example of Machen's honor for his mother, his perseverance in difficulty, and his servant's heart in general is simply lovely.
