Text Structure: Description- This text describes what a fly looks like, the habitat and how it survives. Sequence: this book also has a “life cycle” section of the fly.
Paired Fiction:
Edwards, K. (2015). Fly! Newyork, NY: Random House. Fly!
This text is an adorable depiction of a fly trying to imitate other insects to find out what works best for him (flying). Students are able to begin building background knowledge on differences between insects and other bugs. This book also has a section of bug facts at the end to build background knowledge with and begin a list of things we want to learn about flies.
Strategy Application: The strategy I will use with this text is “ Hop In and Out of using the Table of Contents” (Serravallo, 2015 p. 287). After we have read Fly! We will create a list of research questions we want to learn about a fly. Once we have generated a list of questions I will model scanning through the table of contents to find which chapter that might contain the information we are looking for. Once I have found the correct chapter, I will then model reading to gather facts about my research topic and the facts into my own words to prove my learning.
