Many second-generation believers struggle to develop authentic faith. Is it the parenting, the church, the systems? Or could it be that a background in the church provides its own unique set of struggles? Written from a confessed churchaholic--now an author, pastor, and father--REAL pulls open the curtains and offers an introspective look at what the Bible says to those who've grown up in the faith, answering the questions we've long been afraid to voice. Why do I desire to sin? What's the secret to lasting intimacy with God? REAL offers second-generation Christians a lifeline to personal intimacy with God, a biblical mandate to take ownership of their faith, and grace-based tips on continuing a legacy of faith.
Daniel Darling is an author, pastor and Christian leader. He currently serves as the Director of The Land Center for Cultural Engagement at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Assistant Professor of Faith and Culture at Texas Baptist College.
Prior to his leadership of the Land Center, Darling served as the Senior Vice President for Communications of the National Religious Broadcasters. He also has served the Southern Baptist Convention as the Vice President of Communications at the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. He has also pastored churches in Illinois and Tennessee.
Daniel Darling, pastor and author of several books including Crash Course: Forming a Faith Foundation for Life, Teen People of the Bible: Celebrity Profiles of Real Faith and Tragic Failure, and iFaith: Connecting With God in the 21st Century now presents Real: Owning Your Christian Faith.
This book speaks to the heart of Christians who are sure of their salvation but often feel uncomfortable with many aspects of Christianity especially if they are second generation Christians or grew up with a weekly or daily diet of Christian teaching.
In Real, Darling encourages the reader to embrace, to engage in, and to get real with the faith they proclaim. It's an honest conversation between author and reader where he challenges the second generation Christian to stand up, stand out and get real and stop accepting doctrine but to question it, study it, and make it their own.
This was an interesting book. It sparked a great conversation between my husband and I about the perspectives adult Christians have toward Christianity. He was raised in Church, I was not. My husband agreed with the ideas Dan Darling presents. You cannot inherit Christianity. There comes a time when you simply 'make it your own' or you live out your life on the fringe of what you believe.
I've read all of Dan Darling's books. In each of them I read the heart of a pastor. He has a passion for connecting with the younger generation in new ways but always brings the reader back to the truth of what it really looks like to walk with Jesus everyday.

A little lightweight--particularly the conversational elements. Oveall some helpful reminders to parents of "second-generational"Christians and those that are.
