Fifteen-year-old Rose Graham, who has never been to school because she has been stealing food for her family and taking care of her little sister, is put in foster care and forced to attend high school where homework, first dates, and parties interfere with her mission to be reunited with her family. Original.
I read this book a million years ago when my mom picked it up at the dollar tree and just found it again. The story breaks my heart honestly but in a fun way.
So I picked this up at a library sale for maybe a dime, because at that point, why the hell not, right? This is a super short (to my mind) tween-ish novel that manages to deal with some heavy shit (developmental disability, the foster care system, mental health) in such a way as to be interesting and nuanced without being too terribly heavy handed. Actually, having said all that, it's pretty cute as these things go - mostly it felt almost too short, and without having read this author's other work, the twinge of SFF seemed more like a plot convenience than something that we as readers get to actually understand. Regardless, even had this book been a waste of time (it wasn't), I'm pretty sure it only took about an hour to read (and I have had far worse hours).
However, as someone who will read seriously terrible teen fiction from the eighties and give it a three just because I enjoyed it in some fashion that could well be the very definition of perverse, I would like to be one hundred percent clear that this three is not an "it's crap, but hey I like crap" three. This is more of a "this was a legit decent story that tackled tough issues, but I have a few quibbles that prevent me from giving it more stars, and while I enjoyed it, I wasn't into it enough to be able to ignore those issues in my rating" three.
I read this book a few years ago and I remember I had really enjoyed it. I had went to the library today and saw it on the shelf and immediately grabbed it. I read it in a couple of hours and remembered why I loved this book in the first place. It's short, its good, and I would reread it for a third time. And maybe a fourth, and then a fifth. :)
The only reason my giving this book 3 stars is because although I've read it I don't remover much about it at all I do know it was a quick read but nothing about it memorable
