The first book in her Canadian West series, When Calls the Heart (1983), inspired the popular television series of the same name. Born in Champion, Alberta, to farmers Fred and Amy (née Ruggles) Steeves during the Great Depression, Oke went on to graduate from Mountain View Bible College in Didsbury, Alberta, where she met her future husband, Edward Oke, who later became the president of the college. The couple has four children, including a daughter who has collaborated with Janette on several books. A committed Evangelical Christian, Oke has authored numerous works exploring themes of faith. She has received various accolades for her contributions to Christian fiction, including the 1992 President's Award from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association and the 1999 CBA Life Impact Award.
From the time my Mom read, Spunky's Diary, aloud to my brothers and I, my love for Janette Oke's books was born. In my teens, I loved reading the Love Comes Softly series, as well as her other series. While I was in college, the author was publishing her stand-alones. This book is not only informative concerning the habitat and "culture" of the porcupine animal, but it also deals with overcoming fears in our lives and ultimately learning what being a friend means. This book is excellent for all ages! (I needed to read a book for a challenge where humans are not the main characters! I am so thankful I chose this one, as it's one of the few books of Janette Oke's I hadn't read, yet! :))
This is a cute story in the series of animal tales by Janette Oke ... a young porcupine learning the ropes of how to live in his environment. Very well written, and cute.
Very inspirational, too, for us to realize all the things we fear and should not, all the things we need faith to help us through, and ways to weather the storms of life. An absolutely wonderful metaphoric treatise on living, as well as a cute animal story on the surface.
