Guided by his guru, Swami Satyananda Saraswati, from birth, at the age of four Niranjanananda came to live with him at the Bihar School of Yoga in Munger where he received training in yogic and spiritual sciences through yoga nidra.

In 1971 he was initiated into Dashnami sannyasa, and thereafter for eleven years he lived overseas, mastering skills in varied areas, acquiring an understanding of different cultures and helping establish Satyananda Yoga ashrams and centres in Europe, Australia, North and South America.

At the behest of his guru, he returned to Munger, India in 1983 to guide the activities of Bihar School of Yoga. In 1990 he was initiated as a paramahamsa sannyasin and in 1995 anointed spiritual preceptor in succession to Swami Satyananda Saraswati.

Author of many classic books on yoga, tantra and the upanishads, Swami Niranjan is a magnetic source of wisdom on all aspects of yogic philosophy, practice and lifestyle. He ably combines tradition with modernity as he continues to nurture and spread his guru’s mission from his base at Munger.

This is a concise guide to the main yogic concepts and practices. Although this would need refering to many times if you are not familiar with the indian terminology, it is still a good way to gte to grips with the links between various practices and as a basic introduction to yogic philosophy. If you are looking for something more in depth, there are many books in the Yoga Publications Trust Series which are reliable. They may be difficult or expensive to obtain in Europe (luckily I got this supercheap whilst travelling in India) but I have previously got books from Amazon. Nothing quite like actually practicing yoga! These books can be a good accompaniment to your studies.

planning to begin Satyananda yogic studies next year and this is the primary text at entry level. The stars are for the dedication to a body of awareness and possibility that are at the heart of preserving and teaching this practice. i realized in conversation the other day that being near the Atma Center for Satyananda Yoga is not just a perk of living in my neighborhood, it has become a reason i would not choose to live elsewhere. like even a groovy city/state elsewhere:>

Niranjan is the hand-picked, hand-groomed successor to satyananda, a known sexual predator. The Bihar/satyananda tradition is an abusive, vindictive cult.
Avoid at all cost.
