Mothman!!

A group of boys go to stay at their lake cabin before school starts. Noah swears he keeps seeing someone looking in the windows--someone with wings and red eyes.

As a 31-year-old, this was slightly entertaining. I figure as the target age group though it would be fairly spooky.

I liked it.

Great book just didn't like the ending. Would like to know what had happened to the boys in more detail.

In Jason Strange’s book The Mothman’s Shadow the author writes about a group of boys go to cabin for the last day of summer. Secretly they are being watched by the Mothman.

Outside of West Virginia modern teens may not be familiar with (folk) tales of the “Mothman,” a cryptid seven foot man, with glowing red eyes and enormous wings. Folklorist Jan Harold Brunvand investigated accounts of the 1966-67 reports that prompted John Keel to write “The Mothman Prophecies,” which was later made into a film in 2002. Brunvand concluded that some elements were common among the Mothman reports and some much older folk tales, which suggests that something real may have triggered the stories. But skeptics are adamant in dismissing Mothman tales as hoaxes or pranks, or even sightings of a large owl.
“The Mothman’s Shadow,” follows a group of contemporary boys who are camping in an isolated cabin without adult supervision. After a long drive, and evening of ghost stories, and attempts to sleep in unfamiliar surroundings, it is scarcely surprising that Noah “sees” the Mothman staring in the cabin window at him. When Noah describes the seven foot tall, winged man with red eyes to his friends, they are skeptical. But Ben, Noah’s older brother, does use his cell phone to call the police who come out to check on the boys.
Noah overhears the police discussing the legendary Mothman. He uses his smartphone to investigate the mysterious creature. Even with “proof” from the Internet, his buddies continue to scoff. Until the next night, when the Mothman returns...
No violence or blood, but the plot builds suspense and tension, which reach an anticlimatic conclusion in the novel’s weak ending. Readers will feel compelled to learn more about the Mothman, and will be encouraged to share stories of the weird and unexplained of their own. Good catalyst for discussion and writing. “The Mothman’s Shadow” may fill a gap in collections of the supernatural which tend to be stocked with vampire and ghost lore.

Reading Level 3.6

Whoa--creepy! Ben and Noah are brothers. Their family has a cabin on a lake in the middle of nowhere. Ben, who is 16, is allowed to take his brother and 3 friends to stay the weekend before school starts. Being the older brother, Ben tells the younger boys ghost stories which secretly scares the wits out of Noah. He stays awake in front of the fire while the others go off to bed. He sees movement at the window and S-L-O-W-L-Y parts the curtain, only to be greeted by two huge red eyes and a man size creature with moth wings!!! He screams, the other boys come, and of course, no one believes him. This begins the story of the legend of Mothman.

I was talking to my boys about this book and they ALL said, "Oh yeah, we know about Mothman." Turns out, it or he is a local legend that originated in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. A handful of people swear to have seen him in the late 1960's and the story is still told today. This book is based on that legend.

Besides being uber creepy, this book is noteworthy because it's written at a 3.6 grade level but will be of high interest probably through middle school ages. It also has a glossary, discussion questions and writing prompts at the end so a person could use it for a classroom read or book club.

JUAN G and EDUARDO - Have you ever gone on a trip with your friends?Well in this book 6 friends go on a trip to hidden lake to have some fun,but they are not alone. One night one of the characters feels like something or someone is watching them Noah sees it and feels scared that it will come for them but his brother and friends don't believe him but until they see the thing they will be scared of the thing they will be screaming and never come back but it does not want them to live yet the thing will be hidden somewhere in those woods so next time you go on a trip with your friends watch out for the mothman and get ready to scream and run! We recommend the book to people who like scary books.
