This is part 6 of the great Saga DE BELLIS a tale of the battle between Light and Darkness, and the return of chivalry through the founding of a modern Order of Knights. It is autumn of 2013. Now fluent in Dr. Weitzmann's encrypted tactical language, Bernie Brown and Marty Felsen begin their freshman year at Howell College, up on the hill above the old mining town of Stirling, Pennsylvania, an important station on the old Chandler rail line that starts in Quayment. Their assigned roommate tells them to call him "John Collins." He's a big guy who seems withdrawn and almost mournful, and their first challenge is to become friends with him. Each learns the other is concealing something, and then the surprises begin. They begin to explore the campus, including the curious President's Garden, which is off-limits to students, but they concentrate on the central "Old Main" building which contains the college chapel. They also begin to learn their way around Stirling, where the Chandler lines cross the Fitch valley on an impressive viaduct, then enter a tunnel on their way north. A local legend claimed there was a place on campus from which one could see straight through that tunnel to the sky on the other side, but no one seems to know exactly where it was. Moreover, there is a rumor that a student fell to his death when he tried to see inside a certain room in Old Main. And when a local retired professor tells them of another legend, one that John also knows, they begin to realize that there may be even more secrets lying in wait.
