A deadly attack on a Coalition survey ship on the edge of the galaxy, murder at an early warning station in the Alpha Centauri star system, refugees stranded in outer space after an asteroid strike decimates the Earth, explorers overrun by the most devastating sandstorm in Martian history, an invulnerable superhero with a deteriorating heart condition. These stories and more as science fiction author Robert J. Mendenhall postulates what conditions we might face in futures far— and not so far —off.
Spoiler-free review. This is a great collection of short science fiction stories. There is a good balance of adventure, examining moral dilemmas, personal conflict. About half of stories are set in the same universe where humanity is just starting to reach for the stars, and have hard science fiction or military fiction feel to them. Robert Mendenhall's military experience really shines through on the last tale ("Murder on Centauri") about a military base in the Centauri system that has an unexpected first contact situation. It was my favorite of the set and is an excellent capstone to the collection. Characters are well developed and the science is plausible and well researched.
