Absolutely fabulous! Loved it and didn't want to put it down as it kept me totally engaged. The characters were so real and imaginable, the story at many times heart breaking as I felt the anguish in my soul sure thinking about those aboard the Titanic during the final hours....the sorrow devastating :( There were also beautiful reconciliations and plenty of forgiveness throughout as many had immense feelings of guilt and not only because of an identity switch.)Wonderful spiritual and encouraging elements throughout. This was my first for this author but certainly not last as I will gladly read more here anytime. ** I this would also make a tremendous++ movie adaption with its twist within of the switched identity and the repercussions afterwards, yet a satisfying conclusion despite the tragedy**

The premise of this novel was interesting, and the author had clearly researched the events that occurred on the Titanic. I enjoyed it until about 3/4 of the way through when faith in God became the only plot point. The ending was lame when all of the main characters accepted their fates as the will of God. The only characters who did not find religion were the adulterers, who predictably ended up going down with the ship, presumably to a cold, watery hell. I was disappointed to find that the well-written beginning of this novel ended as a not particularly interesting advertisement for God.

This book has been on my TBR for ages now & I’ve finally gotten to it! Yay! :)
My sister has always been interested in the Titanic and the history surrounding the event, so from a young age, I’ve heard about it.
While reading just normally about the Titanic can seem, well, a bit depressing, over all the lives lost, author Janice Thompson has many hopeful moments in this novel because of all the faith parts. I so enjoyed all the characters & all the faiths and faith moments in this book.
Each chapter starts out with a date; as 4/14/1912 get closer and closer, my adrenaline kept getting on getting higher on seeing what would happen!
And for those who have watched a certain video of mine….the main hero’s name is Nathan! ;D

More like 4.5 but closer to 4 stars.

I am a total Titanic buff and love to read stories about that fateful voyage. And yes, I've watched the James Cameron film "Titanic" about ten times. That said, I enjoyed the premise of this story. The setting appealed to me as well as the plot. The spiritual arc was strong and there were good reasons why Peter sought to help his sister. Now granted, I was disappointed in him, so I hope in the future he resolves his issue. I also wished one of the main characters would have fallen for the man her father arranged for her. Ah, well, sometimes things have a way of going in a different direction and as a reader, you just accept that.

Regarding the romantic aspects of the story, they were heart-warming. I would have loved to have seen more romantic tension, but for whatever reason the story didn't play that out. I know it was a short voyage so not much could be done in such a short time. And we certainly didn't want to see the characters do what Rose and Jack had done in the film. At the same time there is something about staring at death that makes people desperate enough to change their minds about what really matters. The sinking was sad, of course, but it was not shown in a way that would traumatize the reader. The movie did that well enough. In some ways it wouldn't have seemed right to dwell on the negative in this book but rather focus on second chances.

Anyway, I enjoyed this story, though it didn't have quite the zing I'd hoped for. Part of that may be due to the many different points of view rather than the two main characters as is typically done in romantic novels. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable read. The best part of the story was probably the healing that took place regarding the issue with fathers in several characters' hearts. In some ways I would have liked to see more of that aspect of the story because it was so rich and deeply felt.

"Queen of the Waves" is a lovely story that takes place on the ever-grand Titanic. It certainly has an intriguing plot: A young woman of high society, Jacquie Abingdon, is being pushed into a marriage that will forge two businesses together. But this marriage is not with the man she fancies. When an alternate route presents itself, she gladly jumps on board to escape her father's critical eye. Except, Jacquie doesn't jump on board the Titanic, but makes a deceptive switch with Tessa Bowen, a drunkard's daughter, to trade places. In Jacquie's naive mind, this is the only way she can remain with the man she truly loves.

There was quite a bit of romance intertwined into the base of the plot. It is just a collection of sweet love stories all rolled into one book, but still too much for my taste. I was slightly confused that one of the young men in the story, Nathan Patterson, singled out Jacquie in the opera crowd, and later singled out Tessa on the Titanic. He "eyed" each of these young women, you might say, and he didn't realize that they were in fact, switching each other's lives. (It was just a strange coincidence that didn't need to happen for the story to progress.)

Indeed, it's a story of heartbreak. I was greatly interested in the plot of the book, so much so that most of the time I forgot that the characters were on the Titanic, sailing into doom. Overall, a good book. I also enjoyed the Christian aspect of the story that vividly shines through.

"There is a truth, however, that stands the test of time. No ship can penetrate it, no iceberg rise up against it. Nothing anyone builds or claims ownership to, short of the Almighty. It is the truth of God's love for us---love that crashes through even the coldest, most frigid heart."

I haven been looking forward to reading this book ever since the Author started posting pictures of the of the museums she was visiting to research this book. I feel in love with all of the posts by Janice Thompson and could not wait for this book to come out. She did not disappoint!
The story sort of reminded me of the Prince and the Pauper...not quite it would have to be the Princess.
The rich girl...Jacqueline Abingdon sets out to deceive her family, a world wide set of events are about to happen. She is so enamored with Peter Bowen, she will do anything to be his wife.
Peter has a sister that he wants to help...her father is a cruel sick man. He takes everything that goes wrong out on his daughter Tessa.
When Jacquie's Mother sets out to deceive her husband who has arranged a marriage for their daughter. She contacts her Mother in New York, and again the seeds of fate are set. What her Mother doesn't know is that Jacquie is about to deceive her Fiance, Father, and Mother.
Jacquie convinces Tessa to be her and teaches her to be an Heiress, she even has her Ladies Maid Iris in on the plot. What none of them knows is that the ship Tessa and Iris will be traveling on is the Titanic.
Of course we all know what happens on that voyage, but you almost forget and hope not. Impossible to change history, but what a fun ride we have, of course there is a lot of heartache...as we know. Now that we know these people personally it is even harder.
Don't miss this excellent fast read. I could not put it down, and finished in less than a day. Enjoy!!

Janice Thompson, clever and witty, has concocted a tale I couldn’t put down. “Queen of the Waves” is a deft weaving of deceit confronted by truth, shame confounded by love, and guilt swallowed in forgiveness. This is a very different take on Titanic’s many stories—one you won’t want to miss, one you won’t forget.

This book was good. I enjoyed it. It just wasn’t…great.
The pacing felt a bit off, but at the same time it was like it should be. Then, something happens that made me mad. It really destroyed the story for me. Not ruined…but I was disappointed. Tessa and Nathan were amazing though. That couple and the faith content saved the story. If you like Titanic stories, I would recommend.

Content: h word (once, used literally), minor romance (I think a lightly detailed kiss)

Queen of the Waves

Update:

The Icing on the Cake (Weddings by Design #2) by Janice Thompson

The Icing on the Cake by Janice Thompson is a read I needed just right when I had it available to read. As I sit here on the couch attempting by pen and paper to write this review which I will later type I wonder if it is a good time or if the anesthesia has fully worn off yet as I just misspelled icing… Life can be so complicated sometimes and a great past time or distraction may often be found on my bookshelf. This weekend (August 29th) it was found and filled by Janice Thompson first as I returned to the world of wedding organization in Galveston, Texas. This time in the second book of the Weddings by Design series also related to two previous trilogies of Weddings by Bella followed by Backstage Pass.

As I’m organizing my shelves I’ve noticed Janice Hanna Thompson seems to be taking up quite the amount of space. Her books are keepers. I have not just enjoyed but practically loved every book of hers in which I have read and I’m starting, a wishlist for those I’m missing.

To be honest, I’m having a difficult time seguewaying (sp?) what I want to say about The Icing on the Cake and Queen of the Waves so you may just have to endure a double review.

Be it contemporary Texas or historical atmosphere Janice’s books are witty. Full of entertainment through out the characters are lovable and stick with a reader. The seemingly perfect women on the page bear all with their thoughts and many a reader may find a relevant heart. Janice’s stories would all make great movies full of calm and wonderfully appropriate romance. I think those in the Club Wed scene would get along well with Rachel Hauck’s low country Carolina series characters.

I am internet-friends with Janice and have followed her amazing weight loss journey. Finding a related and very believable life setting for the main character in The Icing on the Cake made it even more interesting to me. I also truly enjoyed the slight mystery of choosing which man Scarlet would want and how she got there. The Icing on the Cake is entertaining and a perfect literary escape.

When I finished reading The Icing on the Cake I so enjoyed my adventure to Texas that I needed more of Janice’s writing so I snatched a book long overdue and started reading her Titanic historical novel, Queen of the Waves. Oh what a world! At this time in my life having seen the epic Titanic film and the first two Downton Abbey seasons I was really able to visualize Tessa and Jaqueline’s world around them. Adding to that Janice’s vivid descriptions and story-telling and I was in fiction bliss.

There are so many elements to this story that I enjoyed. Going into an overall historical tragedy is hard, but when it is someone’s writing that you always enjoy I knew she would have an interesting way to pull it all off and still with an ending readers could endure and she did that and more. The Queen of the Waves is a beautiful story for historical fans and all those currently in a Downton-Abbey-esque phase. A wonderfully vivid escape into the past once again provided by Janice.

I’ve discovered she is one of the few to entertain in all genres, even non-fiction devotions with great success!

I've read several books on the Titanic this year so I was excited to read Queen of the Waves for another story about this time in history, which I'm surprised because I really didn't care for the movie that much. But I really like Janice Thompson's story of Tessa and Nathan, alone with the other characters involved with Tessa being on the ship in the first place. Tessa is such a sweet person with a personality that rubs off on those around her, as we see in the story. Throughout all of the horrible tragedy with Titanic, this is a story readers can really enjoy and appreciate. And the vivid details of the time in history leading up to when the Titanic set sail, and as the story unfolds until the end, well it is just an awesome history lesson.
Of course this book is only fiction, and these things didn’t happen aboard the ship, but I loved imagining what it was like, with all of the rich and famous, and imagining what it was like to be there during the horrific tragedy. I thoroughly enjoyed Queen of the Waves and highly recommend it for your reading enjoyment. You will not be disappointed.

This was my third Janice Thompson book and I liked this one the best of the 3 I’ve read. I especially loved the reference to the 4 year old child Manca who survived the sinking of the ship. I liked that Thompson made her a character in this novel. It was obvious that a lot of research went into this and that the author has a lot of passion for this subject. I liked Tessa’s story, and though I didn’t like Jacquie all that much at first, I liked her more by the end.

I was excited about reading “Queen of the Waves” since it was set on the Titanic. Although the story of the Titanic is a sad one, I find it to be a bit fascinating as well. This book was pretty good, although not quite as good as I had hoped it would be. There were a couple things that I didn’t really care for, but I still found the book interesting and fascinating.

This book was really good. I was a bit nervous going into it, because of all the dying I knew would happen…but honestly it wasn’t written to be so sad! Obviously, we get a bit of grieving and crying. As we should, because a bunch of people lost their lives, and this was a true event. When Tessa and Nathan were out on the deck and the ice flew on it, my anxiety peaked!

I was really disappointed no one mentioned the quote for (what I, personally, think is) the reason the ship sunk to begin with! I was really expecting that, and was sad to not see it mentioned anywhere.

As I read this though, I was sitting on the beach and there was a boat going by. I thought it kinda looked tilted, but it was fine…so I think the book was affecting my head. 😂

I really did like this book though, and I would recommend to my friends! 😁

Had this book been written by any other author than Janice Thompson (my favorite) I would not have been quick to read this because the Titanic storyline is not my topic of choice due to the reality and tragedy of the event. That being said, this was a phenomenal read. The story of Tessa, Jaquie, Nathan, Iris and Peter is very compelling and entertaining, I love the way God is woven into the storyline. The story of Tessa and her struggles with her earthly father and how she views her Heavenly Father is a very real and relatable journey of faith, I highly recommend this book!

DNF, page 88.

This is kind of putting me into a slump, so I think I’ll mark it as a DNF for now. I just can’t get into it, and the elopement and lying elements are getting annoying. The setting with the Titanic and everything promises to be interesting, so I may come back to it eventually, but I have other books I need/want to read before the month is over and this is taking too long to read, and I’m just not really enjoying it. (It didn’t help that it was lost for 2 days either).

It's a deceptive voyage all the way around. Socialite Jacquie Abingdon has muddled-up plans for the future; Peter Bowen wants what is best for his little sister; Tessa Bowen must escape her life of horror from which she bears scars; Nathan Patterson is traveling with a finicky mother and unaware of his true bloodlines; Lady's maid Iris has big plans for her future as a fashion designer. All of these people are thrown together in the story of the RMS Titanic.

Tessa, the daughter of a drunken and abusive pig farmer, takes Jacquie's place aboard the Titanic. In the meantime Jacquie remains behind in Southampton with hopes of an upcoming marriage between her and Peter. Tessa finds it difficult to act the part of someone she is not. With her is begrudging lady's maid, Iris. As much as she tries Tessa is unable to befriend Iris. To compound her problems Tessa struggles to come to terms with her faith, or lack thereof. But her luck seems to be changing. Once aboard the Titanic Tessa meets Nathan Patterson and they become fast friends. Through the dealings of these two, Iris is put in touch with Edith Russell, a well-known fashion designer, who is also aboard Titanic. As Titanic steams ever nearer to disaster, each of these individuals, both on land and on sea, are forced to deal with their own personal problems.

This was a pretty interesting tale, overall. Everyone seemed to have their own secrets which made it interesting. I would like to note there are some errors. None it really affects the story, but I would like to point a few of them out nonetheless. First off, one of the characters state that Titanic is the fastest ship at the time. Titanic was not overly fast nor was she built for speed. The White Star Line left the speed to Cunard Line while they focused on luxury. Secondly, Ms. Thompson writes that Titanic has "brakes". Ships do not have brakes. Thirdly, another character mentions something to the effect of Titanic being in good hands with "Edward Smith at the stern". I think what the author meant here is "at the helm".

In Queen of the Waves, Janice Thompson weaves a tale of deceit, loss, and ultimately hope and forgiveness all set to the backdrop of the Titanic, the majestic ship that for a century has captured the awe and interest of so many. I experienced very mixed feelings with this book. The novel held a lot of untapped potential. Several times, right as I thought a scene finally headed toward an emotion-gripping climax, the author would cut it and move on. Thompson also built up to several events only to have them occur off the page. Both of these left me feeling somewhat let down and disappointed.

In addition, readers looking for a romance should be aware that while there is one, it’s not the butterflies-in-the-stomach and starry-eyed kind. For that matter, Tessa and Nathan don’t even meet until halfway through the book and once they do, their affection feels more like something one would see between best friends or siblings. The transition from friendship to romance should have been further developed to make their profession of love less awkward and more believable.

That being said, the novel is a nice one-time read, especially if the reader goes into it knowing that its focus isn’t on the romance, but on Jacquie and Tessa’s decisions leading up to the horrible tragedy, as well as how the different characters react in the aftermath. Tessa is a sympathetic character and one wants to see her gain a chance at a better life. The book does offer as happy an ending as possible given the horrible, real-life circumstances surrounding it. Queen of the Waves is a story for Titanic and historical fiction fans.

The title of this book should be scheming aboard the Titanic! GRIN! I loved the pig named Countess, I was rolling with laughter reading in the opening chapter, Tess wrestling with the huge pig.

Jacgueline is being "forced" to marry a man who will help her father's business, she is not interested to say the least. Her mother isn't happy about it at all. Together they come up with a scheme . . . Jacqueline will board the Titanic and go and live with her Grandmother in New York. For Jacquie this is the perfect answer, although her mother has no idea what she has up her decadent sleeve.
Jacquie is in love with the gardener, Peter, and has no intentions of going to New York. Peter's younger sister, Tess has suffered at the hands of their father and he is worried about her, so when Peter comes up with the idea of his sister taking Jacquie's place, the plan is born.

Jacquie teaches Tess the finer arts of being a lady, and gives her the clothes that would've been in her trousseau. Tess doesn't believe she can pull any of it off.

Aboard the Titanic you feel as if you are one of the passengers. The ship comes alive through Janice's pen. You can hear the music, smell the food, feel the air on the deck. When tragedy strikes, you sense every bit of it like it's 1912 all over again.

I absolutely adored this book!

I don’t believe I have read a novel set aboard the Titanic…and if I have I know I haven’t read one written in such a dramatic fashion.

There were twists and turns to this novel, deception and fear, faith and despair that kept emotions at riveting heights. The voice behind this story was engaging at the core and the character’s struggles constantly kept the story moving forward.

The first hundred or so pages I wondered what was bringing these multitude of characters from so many walks of life together on one ship, but read far enough and you’ll find that each one has a careful place to play in the story.

For anyone with any knowledge of American/British history, it was hard to read the scenes aboard the Titanic, knowing that the ship was not long for the high seas. The final scenes as the ship was going down were difficult to read, hoping that the characters I’d spent over three hundred pages with were among those going to make it.

I thought that the offerings of this novel were epic, well written and tasteful. I had a sense of being on the ship with the characters, a sense of being there as the ship went down. All in all a very enjoyable read.

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the publishers through Litfuse for my copy to review.

This was a no for me. I gave it one star because the sinking of the Titanic was flat and lifeless, and because the characters never captured me. I sort of got vibes of Nancy Moser's Masquerade from this book, only that was good.

Jacquie was not someone that I had any sympathy for. I thought she was selfish and a fool. It was clear that she cared more about her own desires than Tessa's or anyone else's.

I grew weary of hearing about Tessa's horrible father, how many times does the reader need to be told he is rotten? It was well established from the several chapters that featured him that he was lousy. I couldn't muster up much sympathy for Tessa either though, despite the father.

Tessa did little to hold up her end of the charade, she could have at least tried. I was so irked by her inability to stop bumbling her role that I wanted to stomp on the book.

The lady's maid, Iris, also wore on my nerves. I wanted her to stop the griping a lot sooner than she did.

Throughout the story there were tons of lovely details and descriptions of clothing and the Titanic, but all they added up to was words, some authors are able to create scenery with their words, but that was not the case here.

Queen of the Waves was a very enjoyable book. I loved all the details this book provided about the Titanic and life in general at that time, while at the same time it didn't bog down the story with too many details - it was just right!

Tessa, Jacquie and Iris were such enjoyable characters. Tessa was probably my favorite character in the book, but I loved Nathan too - he was a wonderful and sweet character. I would recommend this book.

Why do I read books set on Titanic, they make me cry just like this one did. If this book is any indication how the new American Tapestry line from Summerside Press is going to be I think I'm going to have to collect them all. What a way to start a series! I love Janice's fun contemporary series Weddings By Bella and she does heart-wrenching historicals just as well. I REALLY hope there's some kind of sequel in the works because there's definitely potential for more romance and drama!

There have been a lot of books released that center around the Titanic in the past year or so, but Queen of the Waves takes on a whole new unique and engaging plot that makes it stand out from the others!

Another of Thompson's books without the comedic side thrown in that I absolutely loved! A great story centering around the Titanic that I hope she writes a follow-up to.

3.5 stars. My version of this book that I read actually had 400 pages.

This book started off pretty well. I liked the descriptions and the way the book was written, and the characters were pretty realistic. It seemed to read quickly, too, as the flow from before to on the Titanic went fast in quite a few pages. But I feel like as soon as Tessa met Jessie, everything ground to a halt. Sure, there was a little bit of Christian stuff, which was fine at first, but as she started talking with Jessie, the book just exploded with stuff that I don't agree with. The biggest of these was the "going to heaven" thing which is an entirely different conversation to have.

Psa_115:16  The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD'S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.

Ecc 12:7  Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit (this is God's power) shall return unto God who gave it.

Ecc 9:5  For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Anyways, once Tessa began talking with Jessie, I just felt like the characters' personalities died. They just all became really fake and forced as if the reader has to agree with what they are saying or else.

Nathan was the best character because he likes reading, he's handsome :P, and also he asked the question about why people praise the designer of the Titanic but they wouldn't praise the Creator of the entire universe. That made me happy that it wasn't just me wondering that.

Also, this might seem weird, but I felt like the entire Titanic sinking scene was so rushed, like just in a paragraph or two. And I'm like...this was a major part of it! That disappointed me a little and it was written as if it was nothing more than a canoe tipping over and getting a little wet, with a few side effects.

Content:
Language--None
Sexy Stuff/Romance--Nathan's mom was interested in a guy she wasn't married to (since she was already currently married), a few kisses, some attraction between characters, some side characters were pointed out as being "scandalous," if you catch my meaning.
Violence--Titanic sank, obviously. Some people got hurt. Many people drowned. Light and non descriptive. This scene went by so fast it almost didn't happen.
