Ever wonder how monsters are created?

Real monsters are crafted from betrayal and the type of pain that most people are fortunate enough to never experience.

I should know, I’m Stephan of Rovere.

My father traded me and my twin sister for a throne. Enslaved at fourteen, we were left to the mercy of a kingdom without a conscience. I was forced to spend the next five years as a gladiator, savagely butchering the only souls I was permitted to interact with.

Now I am free and although my father doesn’t know it…

I’m coming for him, and I will take that crown.

The crown that we paid for.

All I have to do is convince some poor woman to be my queen so that Rovere will willingly recognize me as the only suitable and stable contender for the throne.

Lady Naomi is my sister’s best friend. She’s beautiful, shrouded in mystery, and sharper at court politics than most of the men around her.

It is possible that her mind is as dangerous as my sword.

She haunts me, and though I know it is selfish of me to ask a woman who has already done so much for my family to be my queen and share in the burdens of a usurper…

I have no choice.

*** This is a Dark Historical Romance Novel. From Ashes is book II of the Court of Blood and Roses series. The timeline begins moments after A Court of Blood and Roses ends. This is Stephan’s story. From Ashes has Marriage of Convenience, Fierce Female Character, Who Hurt You, Morally Gray Characters, Alpha Hero, Royal Romance, Best Friend’s Brother, and plenty of Steam.

From Ashes - book 2 in this series and it focused on Stephan. Anastacia's brother (her story was what book 1 - The Court of Blood & Roses was about). After having been enslaved, abused and used as a fighter he has to find his feet with his new life now that he's free. As well as getting revenge against his father. For me though at the heart of this book was his relationship with Naomi. It was sweet and endearing. Naomi was loyal, caring and compassionate but also smart as hell especially in regards to the backstabbers in the court that she was in. This was a great read but that ending completely threw me and it was one of this noooooo moments. I cant wait to see what will happen next in this series.

2.5 rounding up; the plot was just as intriguing to me as the first installment, but it had much the same issues as the first book. I feel like at times the language could seem out of sorts for the timeframe and story overall. These read more to me as Gladiator fanfiction, not yet ready for "book" level. The dialogue especially was awkward - it felt like what someone imagines a conversation to read but instead, it's wilted and stinted. Again, there are components to the romantic relationships that I don't typically like, therefore, my connection isn't personal. Also, I wouldn't say this series is spicy. These are a 1 🌶 on my scale - maybe 1.5.

arc review from booksprout

this was a great follow on from the first book, this one had a ton more character and plot development, and i really liked that, it was still fairly fast paced though which was great, the characters are fantastic and some of the more delicate topics were handled really well, there were twists and turn you did not see coming, i really look forward to the next book, because of course this one was left on a cliff.

the only gripe i have is that some of the language isn't kept within the time period so can be a little jarring
