রবীন্দ্রনাথের সঙ্গে জাপানের সম্পর্কের শেকড় গভীরে প্রোথিত। ১৯১৬ সালে প্রথমবার জাপানভ্রমণে যে-বাণী জাপানিদের রবীন্দ্রনাথ শুনিয়েছিলেন, সেদেশের নেতৃস্থানীয় অনেক বুদ্ধিজীবী ও রাজনীতিকের তখন সেটা পছন্দ হয়নি। ফলে আপ্যায়ন জানিয়ে জাপানে নিয়ে আসার ঠিক পরপরই রবীন্দ্রনাথকে অবজ্ঞা করার একধরনের মনোভাব জাপানের একশ্রেণির বুদ্ধিজীবীর মধ্যে দানা বেঁধে ওঠে। তবে সম্পর্কের এই টানাপোড়েন সত্ত্বেও জাপানকে যে রবীন্দ্রনাথ সত্যিকার অর্থে ভালোবেসেছিলেন, তাতে কোনো সন্দেহ একেবারেই নেই। ভালোবাসার উৎস অবশ্যই হচ্ছে জাপানের নান্দনিক উৎকর্ষ এবং সমৃদ্ধ শৈল্পিক বোধ সম্পর্কে অবগত হতে পারা। রবীন্দ্রনাথ যখন প্রথমবারের মতো জাপানভ্রমণ করেন, বিশ্বজুড়ে তখন চলছিল সর্বনাশা এক যুদ্ধ। এশিয়া সরাসরি সে-যুদ্ধে জড়িত না হলেও এশিয়ার কিছু কিছু এলাকায় পরোক্ষ সংঘাত রক্তক্ষয়ী আকার নিয়েছিল। অন্যদিকে আধুনিকতার পথ ধরে এগিয়ে চলা জাপানেও চলছিল সমরপ্রস্তুতি। এতদিন পর্যন্ত জাপানকে রবীন্দ্রনাথ দেখে এসেছিলেন পশ্চিমের দেখা-চোখ ধার করে নিয়ে। জাপান যাত্রী বিশুদ্ধ অর্থে কোনো ভ্রমণকাহিনি নয়। বরং এটা হচ্ছে জাপান সম্পর্কে কবির ভাবনা-চিন্তা তুলে ধরা এক ভ্রমণবৃত্তান্ত। জাপান যাত্রী সত্যিকার অর্থেই যেন হয়ে উঠেছে জাপানের প্রতি যে-ভালোবাসা রবীন্দ্রনাথ বরাবর অনুভব করে গেছেন তারই সবচেয়ে বিশ্বাসযোগ্য দলিল।

A fine read only if you manage to read till the end. Although the starting might feel a little burdening, what follows wouldn’t really disappoint rather would amaze you. While Tagore was pinpoint about what Japan is and isn’t, it was his notion and foresight of what Japan, more accurately ,the Japanese would become which I think is the heart of this travelogue. It took a little more than expected to finish and a reader may need to be able to afford that often to dig out gems.

অনেক কিছু জানতে পারলাম, এটাকে ভ্রমণ কাহিনী বলা ঠিক হবে না এটা তত্ত্বকাহিনী এর বই
