Surveys the fascinating advances being made in the visual arts five hundred years ago, examining the art and history of Europe and the Mediterranean, the Far East, and the Americas during an age of experimentation and discovery.
A beautiful and informative book about the world of art and the world itself around one of my favorite explorers (relax, I got lots of favorites!), Christopher Columbus. 50 or so historical essays about art in the century bracketing 1492 - from Europe (where he was based and departed from), from the Far East (where he erroneously thought he would end up), and the "Americas" (where he actually ended up). Lots of nice photos and other illustrations, a pleasure to look through and learn about what the world was like 500 and some years ago. Assembled and published on the 500th Anniversary of his historic voyages. Good thing he found the Americas, yeh? I mean, where would we all be without that?? Certainly not sitting in the USA typing on a keyboard, that's for sure.
Columbus planned and carried out his Enterprise of the Indies during an age of discovery and creation - a period of astonishing cultural activity not only in Europe but throughout the world. Five hundred years later an exhibition and book celebrate this crucial turning point in civilization by examining the art and history of the principal cultures in Europe and the Mediterranean, the Far East, and the Americas.
