Do guided tours bore you? Would you like to strike out on your own and genuinely satisfy your curiosity? Or have you lived in Tokyo for years without discovering the city's manifold wonders? Then this unique guide is for you. Go for an adventure-filled trip along the Yamanote Line, which loops through Tokyo holding together one of the world's most exciting cities. Easily followed walking tours around each of its 29 stations include historic spots, gardens, distinctive restaurants, amusements, unusual shops, time-forgotten corners, and dozens of other attractions. There are detailed maps and charming ink sketches.
Although any "guide" book to Tokyo is pretty much out-of-date upon being printed, that's immaterial with Foot-Loose in Tokyo. It's as much a snap shot of a time gone by (over 20 years, now) as it is a guide to the sights around the Yamanote train line. It's a personably written book and definitely worth a read if you love Tokyo.
Surprisingly entertaining reading. So evocative of Tokyo in the 1980s that it's more like a snapshot than a guidebook. It made me want to do a guidebook for the MBTA green line of Boston in the 1970s.
