Raging against the Machine

Rate this book
Published to celebrate thirty years of the New Internationalist magazine. With a broad, international circulation, the magazine is as popular as ever with readers who value its independent coverage of world affairs, evocative first-person essays, and hard-hitting exposés. This collection of the most influential pieces of writing is more than a retrospective. It shows how ideas once considered marginal have become self-evident, and it reflects the evolution of the tide of resistance to corporate-led globalization. It comprises sixty articles, including “The Baby Food Tragedy,” “Lethal Lies—The Arms Trade,” “Please do not Sponsor this Child,” and “ The Pride and the Pain.”

Bought this book at a rockin' Christian/Social Justice bookstore in Edinburgh, Scotland mostly for the article about the Nestle/formula/breastfeeding debate. The New Internationalist is apparently the periodical that started all the media attention about it, so I wanted to read the original piece. Lots of folks I worked with in the UK were very active on this issue and on the boycott.

This is a collection of articles from a magazine, and I think that there should be more space for magazines/journals on this website. I enjoy several (what I consider to be) high-quality magazines like Adbusters, Bitch, Good, Sun, etc, and would love to be able to pinpoint articles or issues that particularly struck me or that I would like to share on this site... as long as it didn't get overrun with crap from Cosmo or People or all that drivel. Yay!
