Drawing for Product Designers

Rate this book
This is both a practical and theoretical guide to the visualization techniques used by contemporary product designers, including freehand sketching, digital rendering, information graphics, and presentation skills. Hundreds of hand-drawn sketches and computer models have been specially created to demonstrate critical geometry and show how to develop sketches into finished illustrations. Practical tutorials give guidance in creating simple and complex forms, as well as rendering and providing context using scenarios and storyboards. Insightful case studies of leading designers illustrate the full range of different visualization options available.

Excellent book for learning how to sketch for practical purposes. A compelling method for sketching in a way that aids and informs the CAD process is taught, with plenty of step-by-step tutorials for drawing certain objects of increasing complexity.Towards the end of the book, helpful tips are given regarding sketch rendering, presentation and visual communication.

The first 2/3 sections are interesting for those interested in the mechanics of sketching but aren’t necessary to digest most of the information in the later sections.

Personally I preferred this to “Sketching: The Basics” and “Sketching: Drawing Techniques for Product Designers” which are both often recommended. These books are good for finding examples but poor at teaching methodology, something this book excels at. Highly recommended for people who want to learn to sketch to more effectively explore and communicate their designs.
