Giving this two stars only because of the third story Darla's Valentine, that had a least a bit of humor the rest were just bad, bad, and utterly ridiculous. Who the hell in there right mind thought it would be OK to make Icarus into a vampire, and a a poorly written one at that. Blah. If I had read most of this when I had nothing else to read it would have never gotten finished. There was no character development in any of the stories and the writing was trash.
This book was okay. Its not for everyone so I don't know if I would recommend it or not. The first story Icarus by Sherri L King I would rate a 3. I didn't really care for it that much. The Characters Az (Azure)and Morrigan didn't really do it for me. She starts having dreams about this man, she up and leaves America and buys a home on a Loch in Scotland site unseen except on computer. Then he appears in person with vampire like qualities including wings. At first she's scared, especially after he drinks her blood and tells her that he's an alien. He is also dry when he comes out from under the water. It seemed like all they did is have sex and drink each others blood, it didn't really get exciting until the outlaw from his plane Petiyr comes into the story at the end. There just wasn't much of a relationship, she just loved him and knew about him because of their mate/blood bond. I just didn't really see any real intimate growth between the two of them The second story "Dream On" by Jaci Burton was an excellent story. 5 stars. Started out kind of confusing and I wasn't sure what was going on and I was pissed at Jack also for leaving Kate but all is not what it seems and Jack returns to do what he should have been doing before he left, treating his Katie like his princess. Its a sweet, heartfelt story and I suggest you stick with it if you feel like stopping during the first part of the story. Jaci Burton is an excellent writer, this is the second novella of hers I have read and I've enjoyed both thoroughly. The third Story,"Darla's Valentine " by Samantha Winston was an entertaining story. I don't even know how to rate it. It was humorous, outrageous, and highly sexual. Many adventures happened between Darla to get her to the point to where her and Jordan finally have some wild outrageous sex and let me tell you, its not vanilla sex either. The secondary characters are interesting especially Darla's friend Wendy who Darla shares everything with and I mean everything. It was a novella like none I have ever read before, kinky sexcapades and sexadventures. I guess Darla and Jordan are definitely made for each other. I have never read this author before, the plot was real simple, the story was highly entertaining, I would give this story a 3 1/2-4 stars. After everything written about the books its up to you whether you want to read it or not.Is it worth $14.00? I would say definitely not. I only paid I think it was $1 for it in the mark down bin at Borders couple of months ago. I feel I got my moneys worth. I really liked "Dream On" and found "Darla's Valentine " highly entertaining, and may reread those two stories in the future.
4 stars for DARLA'S VALENTINE by Samantha Winston. Creative and well done erotic scenes. A little kinky. Darla substitutes for her friend to pop out of a plastic cake in a bikini at a birthday party. She keeps having accidental and sexual physical contact with the guy who is engaged to another woman. It was interestingly done. It was different.
DATA: Sexual language: erotic. Number of sex scenes: about eight. Setting: current day U.S. Copyright: 2003. Genre: erotic contemporary romance.
OTHER BOOKS: To date, I've read one other story by Samantha Winston. I gave 3 stars to "My Fair Pixie" Copyright 2005, which appears in the anthology "Lady Jaided's Virile Vampires." My 4 star review for the anthology was posted on 9/11/08.
3 stars for ICARUS by Sherri L. King. Ok, pretty good erotic scenes, mostly sex, some storyline. Icarus is a vampire from another planet. He visits Morrigan in her dreams and later in person. A bad vampire comes to earth and causes trouble.
DATA: Sexual language: erotic. Number of sex scenes: about eight. Setting: current day mostly Scotland. Copyright: 2002. Genre: erotic paranormal romance.
OTHER BOOKS: For a list of my reviews of other Sherri L. King stories, see my 5 star review of “Bedtime, Playtime” posted 4/02/08.
1 star for DREAM ON by Jaci Burton. Didn't like the plot. Sex scenes were not good enough. Kate and Jack were married for twenty years. Jack left Kate five years ago. The story opens with Kate crying and being angry that Jack is gone. That night Jack visits her. They spend time together doing things. He eventually explains what happened.
DATA: Sexual language: erotic. Number of sex scenes: four. Setting: current day U.S. Copyright: 2005. Genre: erotic contemporary romance.
Okay, there are three stories here and the first two deserve 2 stars. They aren't that interesting and the sex scenes don't get me vested in the characters at all. And let's face it, with novellas, something has to get you vested and there really isn't time for a plot.
But the last one (Darla's Valentine by Samantha Winston) is a hilarious 3.5-4 stars. The heroine is outrageously funny and the man is yummy. They try to fit way too much into a novella in terms of plot, so it has people speeding through life. However, it doesn't take away from the hot sex and the funny scenes. It is going to make me look for other Winston stuff, hopefully not a novella?
I was majorly disappointed with this anthology. Usually Jaci Burton is good for a hot sexy story but Dream On was not it. The first 2/3 of the story showed you an asshat of a husband with the ending explaining what the heck was going on.
Icarus by Sherri L King was just terrible. Too much like rape in my book. Mind control does not equal romance.
Darla's Valentine by Samantha Winston was the best of the three but still over-the-top ridiculous. The first mishap was funny, the others were simply ridiculous.
Fever-Hot Dreams has been on my TBR list for a couple years and I was having a really hard time finding it. I ended up buying a used copy on Amazon and was really excited to finally read it.
Unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations. I tried reading every story in this anthology and I just couldn't finish any of them. I found them cheesy and just not my taste. The main characters weren't captivating or likable enough for me. :(
Jaci Burton's Dream On had a good storyline. The first two-thirds was confusing while the last third was both heartbreaking and heartwarming.
Sherri L. King's Icarus also had a good story but the execution was so clichéd that I almost didn't read the other stories.
Samantha Winston's Darla's Valentine was too funny. Between the ridiculous reactions and the erotic accidents, I can't figure out if this was a parody, a satire, or just plain hysterically silly.
I enjoyed both stories from Jaci Burton and Sherri L. King, but I was less impressed with Samantha Winston's. Although the first part of the story was very funny, the last half of the story was way over the top. I understand characters being oversexed, but she took it a bit too far.
Loved Samantha Winston's (AKA Jennifer Macaire) Darla's Valentine. It was funny, refreshing, and Hot! That's the kind of thing that would happen to me(The funny part I mean!).
