Gospel Sonnets: Or Spiritual Songs in Six Parts

Rate this book
"Ralph Erskine (1685-1752) was a great man of God, a great preacher, and a great poet. Six of his seven volumes of Works - all of them sermons - have often been reprinted in the last two centuries. The seventh volume - a volume of poetry - has not, yet, ironically, this was the most common Erskine volume reprinted in his own day! SGCB is to be commended for republishing this great book of gospel poetry, so that we can once again have all of Ralph Erskine's extant writings in print. Erskine's poetry excels in certain areas, such as the interrelationship of law and gospel. It will enhance your knowledge of God's Word, imbue your theology with discernment and warmth, and move you to worship the triune God with doxological praise." - Dr. Joel Beeke

I first read parts of this book over 20 years ago. I instantly loved the concept of Gospel Sonnets. It was like hearing the Gospel and reading poetry at the same time. How could I go wrong? Fast forward more than 20 years, and I have become convinced that this author, Ralph Erskine, may not have fully understood the Gospel himself. This book will set you on a roller coaster ride of sorts, providing comfort and anxiety back and forth. I really want to like this book. The Hansebooks version is especially nice, as the OCR printed very clearly on quality paper that is not too white. So, hats off to the publisher. Overall, however, I cannot recommend this book.

An amazing book with a great touch of poetry. How it lays out plainly the defilement of sin and the restoration of grace through Christ, but most importantly, how to obtain this restoration.
