Doing the wrong thing for what seems to be the right reason is usually the first indication that trouble is on its way. With a mindset that often runs contrary in such a fashion, it is easy to see where the expression, "trouble is your middle name," came into being.
In Loco Moco by Ty Hutchinson , Darby Stansfield again determines that he will give up his unsavory clients and go straight. With his plans to spend some time in the beautiful paradise of Hawaii with his girlfriend Izzy, he is ready to settle down and he is confident that she is the girl for him. Convincing her to take time away from work so they can spend some quality time in the island paradise is the easy part. Even as he begins to relax in his new accommodations trouble is brewing. Little does he know that eyes are on them––hot and angry eyes? Someone is desirous of everything he has, but Darby is still unaware of the danger.
Surfing is in their blood and Darby and Izzy find they must get the permission of the island surfing gang in order to invade the waters for their own surfing fun. As they receive the okay, Darby finds himself again in a situation where he needs to decide right from wrong. He is known for his sales to the mob, and this group is aware of his fame. The money is more than he can make himself give up. However, this small gang of thugs is more than meets the eye. Trouble is brewing, and when Izzy is attacked, Darby is not sure where to turn. One of her new friends on the island gives her some advice, while a few of Darbys friends have their own ideas.
When a young girl goes missing and ends up murdered, and then their bungalow is broken into, Darby takes matters into his own hands. Hiring a P.I. and installing a state of the art alarm system, they begin the task of tracking down leads. When Izzy accepts his proposal of marriage, Darby finds out for the first time that her father is in the FBI. He is no long quite so enamored of his own choices. Can he keep his involvement with the mob from her and her family? Can he safely leave Izzy in their Hawaiian retreat as he treks back to the U.S for his business meetings, or is the danger closer than they know? When Izzy disappears, Darby finds that he is under suspicion. Can he help decipher the clues before it is too late for her?
Hutchinson has a canny way of taking desperate situations and finding the humor in them. His character of Darby Stansfield is quite cunning in a somewhat shady and slapstick way. He is easy to like and while he certainly plays in the big leagues, he has a charm that takes away the sleaziness. Certainly from the time his character was introduced in Chop Suey, he has evolved from a lowly bottom feeder of a salesman to one of the top contenders. His charm and cunning has grown as well, but there is that bit of naivety that keeps him honest. (In an odd sort of way)
His stories are well thought out, and the action is quick and easy to follow. The interesting element of this series it the fact that you rarely figure out the solution until it is there before you. The characters that interact with Darby are well composed and his friendships are deep. He has a compassion that keeps you trusting him even though he is quite a bit of a rogue.
If you enjoy action and comedy this is a great series, one that will keep you entertained. If you love suspense with just a bit of the absurd, this is the work you are looking for. This would be a fun book for a reading group, one where you could discuss the odd merits of the decisions that are made throughout.
Ty Hutchinson just keeps getting better.

Yes, Darby Stansfield is THE "Telecommunications Consultant to the Criminal Underworld", without question. Author Ty Hutchinson's third Darby book in his enjoyable series entitled, "Loco Moco", is set in Hawaii. With sun, sand, gangsters, and an amazingly hot girlfriend, Izzy Weber, Darby has himself set for six solid months of R & R. Back home in San Francisco, Darby's a heavy hitter in sales for Teleco Wireless Co. Darby Stansfield has decided he's earned six months off relaxing in Hawaii for all of his hard earned work. In addition, Darby is going to surprise Izzy in asking her to come along for the six months. However Teleco won't grant her that amount of time off. Izzy decides she'll go for part of Darby's time, and then travel back to Virginia to visit her parents. Not surprisingly for Darby he's found the criminal underworld of Hawaii just days after arriving. He quickly stumbles upon the gang known as "NBB" (North Beach Boys). Naturally before long Darby finds himself selling the NBB gang's leader Akahi a package of services to expand, and increase his business. Selling Telecom packages to the criminal underworld is what Darby does best. Along with his rock star status in the underworld Darby really gets the royal treatment with perks galore. Meanwhile, Izzy has met local merchant and favorite "Momi". Momi runs a local general store and becomes fast friends with Izzy. When Darby sees how much Izzy is enjoying herself spend this block of time in Hawaii he decides to pop the question. But first he flies in a large collection of Izzy's relatives, and his best pal Tav too. While having a huge celebration dinner, Darby surprises everyone by asking Izzy to marry him. Even Izzy's retired FBI agent father seems happy. Of course Darby is alarmed finding out who Izzy's father worked for. Now he's got to walk a tightly guarded line with Izzy's parents. Consulting for NBB and dealing with Izzy's father are a real challenge for Darby. With a delightful plot that reads quickly with some interesting and kookie dialog, "Loco Moco" delivers. While Darby dodges the Yakuza, NBB enforcer Roger Kwan, a peeping tom, and some "Blue & Black surfer jerks he seems to be running for his life a good portion of his six months in Hawaii. Luckily Izzy is pretty good at taking care of herself in tough situations. At one point Darby hires P.I. Rudy Balagot to help watch his back and try to figure some things out for him. A very clever story to be sure, the conclusion was nothing like I expected. Without question, "Loco Moco" clearly the best Darby Stansfield book so far from author Ty Hutchinson. With this third book, this is absolutely a not to be missed series. Although I wasn't bowled over with the first two, this third book greatly increases my opinion of the entire Darby series. I will eagerly await the fourth installment. in addition to his Darby series author Ty Hutchinson's "Abby Kane" series is top notch reading for thrillers. I'm going with five stars out of a possible five stars for' "Loco Moco". Also, I'd like to find a Loco Moco somewhere, it sounds really pretty delicious.
I have now followed Darby through three absurd phases of his life. These phases have been penned by a talented author who continues to provide me with hours of enjoyable reading.
Loco Moco (a Hawaiian staple fast food) id not as crazy as the previous books. In this installment, Darby and his life is a bit more normal - at least as much as can be if you are Darby. These books are tongue in cheek and the plot always has some twists. In this book, I did not suspect the "evil" character and was surprised. Ty did a good job with the inter relationships of the characters. He also did a fairly good job of writing in pidgin which is no small feat. Oral pidgin doesn't translate to the written page well no matter the author.
I look forward to the next installment. Now that Darby's nemesis has been promoted to a heavy hitter, I see a lot of office shenanigans coming.
Keep it coming TY and thanks for the help you have given Ethan Jones.
Another Darby Stansfield novel, this time set in Hawaii. Darby has gotten himself out of a mess with a Mexican cartel and decides to spend some down time surfing and enjoying life with his new girlfriend. Trouble, as always, seems to follow Darby wherever he goes. Who's breaking into his house? Why? Was it just a simple burglary gone wrong or is someone after him? Though not the next great American novelist, Ty Hutchinson does write in a very entertaining fashion. I've enjoyed following Darby's exploits and will continue to do so in the future.
A lot like the others, Darby is getting a little smarter with his dealings, and in this one, the real drama had nothing to do with the gang that he was working with... and the end, i think the epilogue, had an interesting twist... Literally, the last page of the book leaves you with your mouth dropping and your eyes wide open going "holy crap!" again, a fun read, a little saner than the first two, a lot more "chill"... but still pretty good!
Darby, Darby, Darby. When are you going to learn? It's time to step away and become legit. Loved the story; it was fast paced and full of action with an unexpected ending. Can't wait for the next one!
Best thing about completing the reading list for the year with reviews, you get to rediscover your faves all over again. Ty whips up another Darby treasure here with Loco Moco. Now we have a tropical destination to watch our favorite criminal telecommunication specialist get in trouble, yet again.
This is my third Darby Stansfield novel. He is such a great character. This time he is in Hawaii trying to "go straight" and stop consulting for gangs. No can do, he's nabbed by the North Beach Boys. He apparently has a rep. He's with his girlfriend Izzy. He can't get out of it, so he is enmeshed again. A great tale. Leaves me thinking their just might be one more novel.
