ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dr. Alexander is a psychologist with the Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston and the 17th Circuit Court of Florida.
I wish I had followed the psychologist request to read this before surgery. It really does help make the deciding process clear and help work through if this is right. It also gives good tips on how to succeed from surgery, and figure it what you need to work on changing before surgery to make a more successful outcome.
Very no-nonsense; bracing rather than supportive, which is not in itself a bad thing. Still, glad I also have human support at first hand; this is in no way a substitute for that. There's plenty of solid advice here; nothing you don't also pick up from various other support sources, but it's useful to have it condensed in one place.
If you are considering bariatric surgery, or have had bariatric surgery, this book is a great reference. It also has a lot of references you can look up.

I think this book will help keep me sane. It's got good advice on how to psychologically manage life change - and would probably be suitable for anyone changing their way of eating - surgically or otherwise.
This book covered all the struggles one will face with bariatric surgery. It helped me realize how much of a struggle it will always be and that I have a huge responsibility for my success. There is no sugar coating, pun intended, but the surgery does provide a leg up and a head start. I appreciated all the psycho social aspects backed up with real people's experiences
I bought this thinking it might help me as I explored possible weight loss surgery. Try as I might, multiple times, I just could not get into this book. Maybe the time was not right for me, I don't know. I ended up doing research online and talking to people online who helped me make my decision and gave me the insight I needed. While this was not a book for me I can see that it might be perfect for some, I think something like this is a very personal thing.
This book is a must for all bariatric patients. It covers all aspects of why you needed weight-loss surgery to begin with, the majority of the journey of weight-loss surgery and it addresses all realms of issues that possibly lead to being overweight to begin with .
This book will help you process through the realities, challenges, and changes that come with Bariatric surgery. It also addresses many of the possible pitfalls and gives practical advice and strategies for dealing with those. I’m really glad I read it and would highly recommend it if you’re considering WLS.
I'm getting bariatric surgery this summer and this book, while not necessarily telling me much I didn't know, was a nice repository of information in a well-organized place. It has all kinds of good advice and I'd definitely recommend it to others.
This is a "Must Have" book for anybody that has had or is going to have bariatric surgery. It offers advice in responding to the emotional and psychological effects of bariatric surgery for the patient as well as those around the patient.
This book has been immensely helpful in helping me prepare for bariatric sleeve surgery. I was able to identify behaviours and was made aware of better ways of thinking in terms of eating. I am more empowered now with my decision.
I learned several useful tools for continued success! I will definitely consider using some of the suggestions from this book and appreciated the multiple scenarios in the text.
A must read for those considering bariatric surgery. Brings up great questions to discuss before the procedure and stresses that while one goes through this major change there is support.
I thought this book was amazing!! Had a lot of good information, resources and tips. I truly believe this book should be handed out to all the patient's attending the RAH, Weight Wise Clinic.
Very good resource. It was short and to the point but packed with lots of useful information. There were real life examples/stories in each section which were helpful as well.
The Emotional First Aid Kit: A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery
Excelente libro ! Es una guía muy práctica!! ayuda a enfrentar y comprender la vida pre y post cirugía de una forma totalmente realista que te prepara for the long run".
Sometimes straightforward and no-nonsense is just what the doctor ordered. Lots of good advice. I think it would also be a good read for supporting family members to get an idea of all that the decision to have bariatric surgery entails and then how to help the patient post surgery.
